Allah certainly does not feel shy that He sets up                                                            The example of a gnat – or what is beyond that.                                                            So, as far those who believed, they know                                                                     That this surely is the truth from their God.                                                                     And as far as those who disbelieved, then they would say,                                         “What had Allah destined with this example?                                                      He lets go astray with it many. And He guides with it many.”                                  And He does not let anyone go astray except the disobedient.

Used for a man, the same means that he attempted, desired, intended, pursued, sought, tried, wanted or wished to do something and may or not have reached his desired goal.
