The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       002:052

وَاِذۡ وٰعَدۡنَا مُوۡسٰٓى اَرۡبَعِيۡنَ لَيۡلَةً ثُمَّ اتَّخَذۡتُمُ الۡعِجۡلَ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِهٖ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ ظٰلِمُوۡنَ

             Wa-iz-waa-ud-naa-moo-saa-ur-ba-ee-na-lai-la-ton–thoom-mut-ta-khuz-to-mool-ij-la-min-bau-day-he-wa-un-toom-zaa-lay-moo-n.

             And when We promised Moses forty nights. Then you picked the calf to worship after him. And you surely were or became the wrongdoers.

  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اِذۡ — Iz — When (= Behold; call to mind, recall; remember or think of the
    time, event, occasion, opportunity or time)
  • وٰعَدۡ — Waa-ud — Promised (= Appointed; communed; fixed the period; made an appointment; pledged; set up a covenant)
  • نَآ –Naa —  We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Used with God’s name it reflects the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • مُوۡسٰى — Moo-sa — Moses (= The name of a Messenger / Prophet of Allah)
  • اَرۡبَعِيۡنَ — Ur-ba-ee-na — Forty (= Numerical total of 1+39; term of 40 nights)
  • لَيۡلَةً — Lai-la-ton — Nights  *  (= Absence of sun-light; the opposite of the sunlit day; the period of darkness between sun-set and dawn next day)

  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma…(ut) — Then  (= After that; subsequently; thereafter)
  • اتَّخَذۡ — Ut-khuz — Picked (= Caught; chose; grabbed; grasped; seized; took)
  • تُمۡ — To-m…(ool) — You  (= pl., m., 2nd person. Ref here is to you بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ )
  • الۡعِجۡلَ  — Ij-la — Calf (= The stage of a baby cow before she grows into a heifer)
  • مِنَ — Min —  From (= Among, from or out of a class, category, count or kind. Among, from or out of several persons or things)
  • بَعۡد — Bau-day — After (= After departure; behind; in  absence; later; subsequently)
  • هٖ — Hee — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Ref is to Moses)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above
  • اَنۡ — Un — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; in all seriousness; indeed; positively; really; truly; verily)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pl., m., 2nd person. Ref here is to you بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ )
  • ظٰلِمُوۡنَ — Zaa-lay-moo-n — Wrong-doers (= n., pl., Doers of spiritual harm, hurt an injury; culprits; criminals; evil-doers; polytheists; transgressors; unfair;
    unjust; violators; wicked; doers of grievous wrong)

* Note 002:052.   Translators often use the fill-in-the-blanks-info-within-the-parenthesis method to convey the real intent of the original text deemed vital but missed in the translation.    As a sample of how A R Omar translated the explanation of this verse by Allamah Nooruddin: “We made an appointment with Moses (that) of (spending) forty nights (on Mount Sinai), then you took (to worship) the (golden) calf in his absence, and you were transgressors (in doing so).”
