وَاِذۡ اَخَذۡنَا مِيۡثَاقَكُمۡ وَرَفَعۡنَا فَوۡقَکُمُ الطُّوۡرَ ؕ خُذُوۡا مَآ اٰتَيۡنٰکُمۡ بِقُوَّةٍ وَّاسۡمَعُوۡا ‌ ؕ قَالُوۡا سَمِعۡنَا وَعَصَيۡنَا ؕ وَاُشۡرِبُوۡا فِىۡ قُلُوۡبِهِمُ الۡعِجۡلَ بِکُفۡرِهِمۡ ‌ؕ قُلۡ بِئۡسَمَا يَاۡمُرُکُمۡ بِهٖۤ اِيۡمَانُكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‏

 

Wa-iz-aa-khuz-naa-me-thaa-qa-koom
Wa-ra-fau-naa-fao-qa-ko-moot-toor
Kho-zoo-maa-aa-tai-naa-koom-bay-qoow-wa-tin-wus-ma-oo
Qaa-loo-sa-mae-naa-wa-asai-naa
Wa-oosh-ray-boo-fee-qo-loo-bay-hay-mool-ijla-bay-koof-ray-him
Qool-bae-sa-maa-yau-mo-ro-koom-bay-he-ee-maa-no-koom
In-koon-toom-moe-may-nee-n.

 

And call to mind when We took your Pledge
And raised above you the mountain (= Brought you to the foothills and said)
“Hold with strength what We give you and listen.”
They said, “We have heard. And we have disobeyed.”
And their hearts were imbibed with the love of calf due to their disbelief.
Tell them, “Evil is with which your faith enjoins you
If you have been believers in any faith at all.”

  • كُمۡ –Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.   The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly.   Here the reference is to the Israelites بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., Links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • رَفَع — Ra-fau — Raised (= Elated; elevated; heightened; lifted; towered above)
  • نَآ — Naa –We (= pro., pl., m & f., 1st person. Used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • فَوۡقَ — Fao-qua — Above (= Higher then; over; overhead)
  • کُمُ — Ko…m(oot) — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.  See  كُمۡ  above)
  • الطُّوۡرَ — Toor–  Mountain (= Hill; higher ground; mound; mount. Many translators have referred the word to point to the Towering Height and/or/of Mount Sinai)
  • خُذُوۡا — Kho-zoo — Hold (= 1. Catch; draw; grab; obtain; receive; secure; seize; take. 2. Absorb; comprehend; grasp; understand)
  • مَآ — Maa — Whatever (= All that; whatsoever)
  • اٰتَيۡ — Aa-tai — Give (= Award; bestow; confer; deliver; grant)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., m & f., 1st person. Used with God’s name it is the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.  See  كُمۡ  above)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literal translation and best sense conveyed is ‘with’)
  • قُوَّةٍ — Qoow-wa-tin — Strength (= Earnestness; firmly; firmness; force; might; power; strongly; with willing hearts)

  • اسۡمَعُوۡا — Us-ma-oo — You hear (= Hearken, listen, obey and pay attention to Our Word, the Law We gave, Our Commandments)
  • قَا لُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past., pl., m; 3rd person: Ref is to the men who made Covenant and were entrusted with the message. Called. Announced; asserted; boasted; broadcast; conveyed; exclaimed; explained; informed; replied; responded)

  • اِيۡمَانُ — Ee-maa-no — Faith (= Behest of Faith; belief; total confidence; trust)

  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when situation arises)
  • كُنۡ — Koon — Have been (= v., Conveys continuation; ‘That one in the 3rd persons ‘used to’. This verb and its 14 grammatical variations indicate an act’s continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future – such as ‘continued doing’ or ‘went on doing’)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pl., m., 2nd person.  You. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • مُّؤۡمِنِيۡنَ — Mo-may-nee-n Believers (= Adherents; Faithful who believed in the Holy Qor-aan, The Islaam, and became Moslem. Men of faith)
