سَلۡ بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ كَمۡ اٰتَيۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنۡ اٰيَةٍۢ بَيِّنَةٍ ‌ؕ وَمَنۡ يُّبَدِّلۡ نِعۡمَةَ اللّٰهِ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَتۡهُ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ شَدِيۡدُ الۡعِقَابِ‏

 

Sul-ba-ni-is-raa-ee-la-kum                                                                                                                 Aa-tai-naa-hoom-min-aa-ya-tin-buy-yay-nah                                                                              Wa-mun-yo-bud-dil-nae-ma-til-laa-hay                                                                                       Min-bau-day-maa-jaa-ut-ho                                                                                                           Fa-in-nul-laa-ha-sha-dee-dool-aiy-qaa-b.

 

Ask the children of Israel how many                                                                                     Of clear signs We gave them.                                                                                                   And whoever exchanges a blessing of Allah                                                                        After it has reached him,                                                                                                        Then Allah surely is very severe in the follow-up

 

  •  سَلۡ — Sul — Ask (= Question; enquire; inquire from)
  • بَنِىۡٓ — Ba-nee — All children (= Followers; nation; tribes. progeny; off-springs; future generations.   The vowel ‘mudd’ refers to all)
  • اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ — Is-raa-ee-la — Israel (= The vowel ‘mudd’ refers to ‘All’ tribes or descendants from the 12 sons of Prophet Jacob)
  • كَمۡ — Kum — How many (= What number)
  • اٰتَيۡ — Aa-tai — Gave (= v., s., Awarded; bestowed; blessed; conferred; delivered; distributed; donated; entrusted; equipped; gave; gifted; granted; handed down; presented; revealed)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person.  Us.  Used with God’s name it reflects the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • ھُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to House of Israel)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class, category, count, kind of several articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  •  اٰيَةٍ — Aa-ya-tin  — Signs (= n., pl of … An argument, corroboration, indication, insinuation, pointer, portent, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. See Note 002:074)
  • بَيِّنَةٍ — Buy-yay-naa-tin — Clear Signs (= pl., Clear, convincing, irrefutable, manifest, veritable and sure arguments, corroborations, evidences, proofs, portents, signs and testimonies of Truth)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; whereupon; yet)
  • مَنۡ — Mun — Who (= Anyone; whoever; whom; whomever; whoso; whatever; whatsoever; all that)
  • يُّبَدِّ لۡ — Yo-bud-dil — Exchanges (= v., Adopts, barters, changes, chooses in place, takes in lieu, tampers with or substitutes with something inferior or lesser value)
  • نِعۡمَةَ — Nae-ma-ta..(ul) — Blessing (= n., s., Special gift, favor or reward. See Note 002:212)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class, category, count, kind or several persons or things)
  • بَعۡدِ — Bau-day — After (= Behind; later; subsequently
  • مَا — Maa — All that (= 1. All that; whatever; whatsoever. 2.  Any time; when; whenever)
  • جَآءَتۡ — Jaa-ut — Came (= v., past., f. Arrived; became manifest in fulfilling the divine prophecies; came to pass; positioned; reached; was achieved, brought, delivered or settled)
  • هُ — Ho — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the said blessed person
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; resultantly; so; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • اِنَّ — In-n…(ul) — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • اللّٰهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • شَدِيۡدُ — Sha-deed…(ol) — Severe (= Fierce; frightful; grievous; incredibly harsh; terrible. Also, forceful; heavy; mighty; stern; strict; strong)
  • الۡعِقَابِ — Aiy-qaa-b — Follow-up (= n., Accountability; aftermath; chastisement;  consequence; continuation; effect; outcome; penalty phase; punishing; punishment;; requiting; retribution; result; sequel)

 

** Note 002:212. The word   نِعۡمَةَ  (= nae-ma-ta) is a noun, singular and mean as follows.

  1. A special blessing, gift, favor or reward.
  2. A boon, blessing, bounty, comfort, delight, favor, generosity, good act, grace, kindness.
  3. Some translators narrowed the meanings to only ‘acceptance of Islam.’
  4. There are also translators who expanded the meanings of this word to include all kinds of worldly abundance, goods, goodness, indulgences in joys and prosperity
