The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                    002:241

 

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يُتَوَفَّوۡنَ مِنۡکُمۡ وَيَذَرُوۡنَ اَزۡوَاجًا وَّصِيَّةً لِّاَزۡوَاجِهِمۡ مَّتَاعًا اِلَى الۡحَـوۡلِ غَيۡرَ اِخۡرَاجٍ‌‌ ۚ  فَاِنۡ خَرَجۡنَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡکُمۡ فِىۡ مَا فَعَلۡنَ فِىۡٓ اَنۡفُسِهِنَّ مِنۡ مَّعۡرُوۡفٍؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَزِيۡزٌ حَکِيۡمٌ○‏

 

Wul-la-zee-na-ya-ta-wuf-fao-na-min-koom                                                                                 Wa-ya-za-roo-na-uz-waa-jun-wa-see-ya-tun                                                                              Lay-uz-waa-jay-him-ma-ta-un-elul-hao-lay                                                                                  Ghai-ra-ikh-raa-j.

Fa-in-kha-ruj-na-fa-laa-jo-naa-ha-alai-koom                                                                              Fee-maa-fa-ul-na-fee-un-fo-say-hin-min-mau-roo-f.                                                                 Wul-laa-ho-aa-zee-zoon-ha-kee-m.

 

And those among you who are dying                                                                                   And leave behind wives make a will                                                                                       For their widows of provision for a year                                                                          Without facing or even fearing an expulsion.

But if they voluntarily leave then there is no blame on you                                      In what they gracefully do regarding themselves.                                                      And Allah is the Mightiest, the Wisest.

 

  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but;  also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. All those articles, things or persons)
  • يُتَوَفَّوۡنَ — Ya-ta-wuf-fao-na — Dying (= Breathe their last; depart; go in transition. A/t/a ‘about to die’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — Among (= From among or out of the class, category, count, kind of several articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.  You.  The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses.   See وَ above)
  •  يَذَرُوۡنَ — Ya-za-roo-na — Leave behind (= As heir and widows)
  • اَزۡوَاجًا —  Uz-waa-jun — Wives (= Widows; females counterpart of a married couples.  Surviving life companions, mates or spouses)
  • وَّصِيَّةً — Wa-se-ya-tun — Will (= n., Bequest. The action to bequeath, make bequest, testamentary disposition. A/t/a A binding injunction)
  • لِّ — Lay — For (= For or with intent to get or give attention, benefit, credit object, purpose or reason of)
  • اَزۡوَاجِ — Uz-waa-jay — Wives (= Females counterpart of a married couples; mates; life companions; spouses; widows)
  • هِمۡ — Him…(ma) — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid persons)
  • مَّتَاعًا — Ma-taa-un — Provisions  (= n., Food, clothing, residence, maintenance and every element of comfort, convenience and living expenses.   Benefits, bounties,   shelter, sustenance and valuables.   Events, places or opportunities of enjoyment, little fun, breaks, reprieves, respite, stay, use and worldly assets.   Translations have also added to the above the following:  (i) ‘Total sustenance for their living expenses,’ or  (ii) ‘Ample, great and lots of,’ or (iii) ‘Adequate allocation and reservation of’, or (iiii) ‘ Appropriate or Temporary grant of’)
  • اِلَى — E-la…(ul) — For (= 1. In the direction of; towards. 2. For; until; till)
  • الۡحَـوۡلِ — Hao-lay — A year (= The period of twelve months)
  • غَيۡرَ — Ghai-ra — Without (= Besides; else; excluding; not;  other than; out of;  prohibiting; without)
  • اِخۡرَاجٍ‌‌ — Ikh-raaj — Turning out (= n., Arbitrary, compulsory or forced ban, banishment, deportation, driving out, ejection, eviction, exile, expulsion or throwing out of the home, dwelling or residence where the widow last lived with her husband)
  • فَ —  Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; then; thus; therefore; yet)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= If situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
  • خَرَجۡنَ — Kha-ruj-na — They leave (= Depart, go away or walk out themselves, voluntarily of their own accord and free will from the residence with their deceased husbands)
  • فَ  — Fa —  Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; thus; therefore; yet)
  •  لَا — Laa — No (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • جُنَاحَ — Jo-naa-ha — Blame (= Inappropriate conduct; crime; illegal; misdeed; harm; offense; sin; wrong; violation of a Prohibition)
  • عَلَيۡ —  Alai — On (= Above; against; during; for; on; on top of; over.   A/t/a No blame will attach or come to you for what they deem fit to pursue or do with themselves)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person.   You.  The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= 1. Amidst, among, contained or inside a duration, event time, place, period, thing or situation.   2. Concerning; in reference, regarding; relative to)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= 1. What; whatever; whatsoever.  2. Any time; at such time; when; whenever)
  • فَعَلۡنَ — Fa-ul-na — Widows did (= v., f., pl., Acted; committed; dealt; fell to do; performed proceeded; reacted; rendered; returned; treated. A/t/a ‘Did any lawful deed concerning themselves,’ ‘disposed of themselves provided it is honorable,’ or ‘any proper thing which they do concerning themselves’.  These translations have obviously added above-mentioned italicized conditions to limit a widows’ right to manage her affairs as she saw fit)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — Regarding (= Concerning; in reference, relative to)
  • اَنۡفُسِ — Un-fo-say — Selves (= pl., Hearts; individuals; minds; persons; souls)
  • هِنَّ — Hin-na — Them (= pl, f, in 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid women)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= From or out of the class, category or count of)
  • مَّعۡرُوۡفٍ  — Mau-roo-fin — Gracefully (= With grace and honor.    In decency, equity, justice or kindness.   On equitable terms.   Appropriately; decently; equitably; fairly; honorably; lawfully; nicely; properly; reasonably;   righteously; suitably.  According to the custom and usage.   A fair, just, appropriate, approved,   becoming, befitting, customary, equitable, reasonable proper or suitable basis, fashion, manner, method,  way or form)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — By (= This وَ vaao is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • عَزِيۡزٌ — Azee-zoon — Mightiest (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is revered.   The Highest; most elevated, honored and respected.   All-Mighty.   Exalted in might and the power.   The Mightiest.   This one word has the meanings of might with respect)
  • حَكِيمٌ۬ — Ha-keem — Wisest (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Exalted in wisdom. All-Wise.  Best Possessor of wisdom.  Extremely shrewd. Full of wisdom)
