The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                          002:242

 

وَلِلۡمُطَلَّقٰتِ مَتَاعٌ ۢ بِالۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ ‌ؕ حَقًّا عَلَى الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ

 

Wa-lil-mo-tul-la-qaa-tay-ma-taa-oon-bil-mau-roof                                                                   Huq-run-aa-lul-moot-ta-qee-n

 

And likewise for the divorced women a provision an appropriate                           Is a binding duty on the pious.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Likewise or also in continuation with the prior verse.   Normally Conj., although, but, additionally, while; yet)
  • لِلۡ — Lil — For (= For or with intent to get or give attention, benefit, credit object, purpose or reason of)
  • مُطَلَّقٰتِ — Mo-tul-la-qaa-tay — Divorcees    (= pl., The divorced women after the expiry of the period of waiting.   Note 002:228 is a must to be read herewith)
  • مَتَاعٌ — Ma-taa-oon — Provisions (= n., Food, clothing, residence, maintenance and every element of comfort, convenience and living expenses.  Benefits, bounties,      shelter, sustenance and valuables.  Events, places or opportunities of enjoyment, little fun, breaks, reprieves, respite, stay, use and worldly assets.  Translations have also added to the above the following: (i) ‘Total sustenance for their living expenses,’ or (ii) ‘Ample, great and lots of,’ or (iii) ‘Adequate allocation and reservation of’, or (iv) ‘Appropriate or Temporary grant of’)
  • بِ — B…(il) — With (= The Arabic word  بِ  literally in English means ‘with’)
  • الۡمَعۡرُوۡفِ‌ — Mau-roo-f — Kindness (= As appropriate.   With or in decency, grace, gratefulness,  honor and propriety.   See many more meanings under 002:179 because this and the prior word combined are used in many places including the verses 002:234)
  • حَقًّا — Huq-qun — Binding duty (= Absolute must; binding legal obligation; command; highly justified; incumbent; mandatory; obligatory)
  • عَلَى — Aa-la…(ul) — On (= Above; against; during; for; on; on top of; over; upon)
  • الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ — Moot-ta-qeen — The pious (= v., Act piously and righteously.   Avoid angering Allah.   Be God-fearing, good, noble, pious and righteous.  Clean inner self.  Doer of duty to God Almighty.  The root of this word means lifting one’s lower-body garments from getting soiled by dirt on the ground or entangled with thorns there.  The Holy Qor-aan has used this word and its derivatives very frequently.  It has been translated with widely different words and phrases that can be seen in our Commentary titled as The Righteous)
