The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                  002:244

Aa-lum-ta-ra-aiy-lul-la-zee-na-kha-ra-joo-min-day-yaa-ray-him                                            Wa-hoom-o-loo-foon-ha-za-rul-mao-tay.                                                                                       Fa-qaa-la-la-ho-mool-laa-ho-moo-too                                                                                             Thoom-ma-ah-yaa-hoom.                                                                                                                  In-nul-laa-ha-la-zoo-fudz-lin-aa-lun-naa-say                                                                               Wa-laa-kin-na-uk-tha-run-naa-say-laa-yush-ko-roo-n

Why don’t you look at those who came from their homes                                            And they were thousands but feared death?                                                                Then Allah said to them “Die”.                                                                                                 Then He gave them life.                                                                                                       Allah is indeed the Lord of Grace to the people.                                                               But most people are not grateful.

Note 002:244a. Various authors have translated the phrase اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَى differently from each other. Some authors stated it differently from their own translations in other verses. Examples of such difference are in several verses.

The segment  اَلَمۡ (= aa-lum = don’t)   is a combination of two words. The first word أ (= aa) is a question mark. The second word لَمۡ  (= lum) means no, not, not at all, never. Jointly the combination means can’t, don’t, hasn’t, haven’t, shan’t or won’t as in verses

The segment تَرَ  (= ta-ra = you see) is a combination of two words. The first word  تَ  (= ta) means ‘you’ which some authors just mimicking the Western renditions of other scriptures have translated as thou or thy. The second word رَ  (= ra = v., pres., pl., 2nd person) means find, look, observe, ponder, see, view, watch or witness. Some situations can justify translating this word as consider, evaluate, know, notice or realize. The simple straightforward translation of this verb includes all the readers and addressees of this verse.

See verses 002:244, 002:247, 002:259, 003:024, 004:045, 004:050, 004:052, 004:061,  004:078, 005:063 and 105:002 among others.

** Note 002:244b.  M Pickthall limited this rule to only the event of Exodus in the history of Jews.  Likewise AM Omar quoted his father, “Allah said to them ‘Die’ (with the result that this generation perished while wandering in the wilderness for forty years.)  Then (from the next generation) He revived them.”

However, as a Rule of Universal Application this verse has a much broader scope of its application.  It indeed is an accurate record of an historical event.  It also is a forecast as the guidance relative to the similar events that will happen in the future of mankind.  It is one of the grounds that permits immigration.  It labeled as the Fear of Death is judicially held to be a good ground for the grant of Asylum and Refugee Status in the laws of all civilized jurisdictions and the charter of the United Nations.
