Would anyone of you like that he has                                                                                   A garden of date-palms and grapes                                                                                    Flowing underneath it are the rivers.                                                                                  For him therein are all kinds of fruits.                                                                            And old age has reached him                                                                                                   And he has kids – weak and vulnerable.                                                                              Then a whirlwind has reached it                                                                                            In it a fire so it (the fire) burnt it (the garden) down.                                                    Like this Allah explains to you                                                                                            The signs so that you reflect. **

* Note 002:267. The translation of the last part is ‘This is how Allah makes the revelations clear to you so that you will reflect.’  The original text has used the pronoun ‘koom’ twice and underscored the emphasis on ‘you’ as the addressee.  Paraphrasing this sentence by using ‘you’ only once as the English language would ordinarily do has been avoided here intentionally. See another example under 002:243.

But some examples of paraphrasing like the following are significant.  The translator there has conveyed the gist in his own words rather than providing an accurate translation of the original text. “Would any of you, being a man well-advanced in age with helpless children to support, wish to have his garden planted with palm-trees, vines and all manner of fruits, and watered by running streams – blasted and consumed by a fiery whirlwind”? – N. J. Dawood
