* Note 002:268: A simple and straightforward translation of this part of the verse is: “Do not choose choose from it the unclean part for spending in good cause when you won’t take it for yourself unless you close eyes in doing that.”  One author translated it as “Do not select out of it for charity that which is useless when you would not yourself accept the like of it, save with reluctance.”  M Zafrulla Khan translated it as “Do not select out of it for charity that which is useless when you would not yourself accept the like of it, save with reluctance.”

Toogh-may-zoo translates in to connive that the American Heritage Dictionary defines as “1. To feign ignorance of a wrong, thus implying consent. 2. To cooperate secretly, conspire.”

Toogh-may-zoo implies using coercion and compulsion to force someone to do a thing that he would rather not do but has to bear, live with, put up or tolerate it in extreme disgust, hate, pain, reluctance, unhappiness and unwillingness, such as in the following examples

  • a child who dislikes the quinine is forced to eat it and coaxed to close eyes and bear it.
  • ‘You would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate.’ [M Muhsin Khan and TD Al-Hilai].
  • A Moslem prisoner coerced to eat swine-flesh in ham, pig-meat, pork, sausage, lard, etc.
