Holy Qor-aan 002:281
وَاِنۡ كَانَ ذُوۡ عُسۡرَةٍ فَنَظِرَةٌ اِلٰى مَيۡسَرَةٍ ؕ وَاَنۡ تَصَدَّقُوۡا خَيۡرٌ لَّـكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ
Wa-in-kaa-na-zoo-oos-ra-tin-fa-na-zay-ra-toon-elaa-mai-sa-ra-tin Wa-un-ta-sud-da-qoo-khai-roonl-la-koom-in-koon-toom-tau-la-moo-n
And if he has been on hard times, then grant a delay till the time of ease. And that you remit as charity is better for you if you knew.
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon
- اِنۡ — In — If (= If the situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
- كَانَ — Kaa-na — He has been (= pl., 3rd person., Conveys continuation as in ‘used to’. Refers to the borrower, debtor or mortgagor)
- ذُ وۡ — Zoo — Of (= Master; owner; possessor. Joined with the next word, the combo means a borrower, debtor or mortgagor) )
- عُسۡرَةٍ — Oos-ra-tin — Hard times (= Difficulties. Dire, strained or straitened circumstances or environment or situation. In straits. ‘Has no money’)
- فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; thereafter; therefore; yet)
- نَظِرَةٌ — Na-zay-ra-toon — Grant delay * (= Continuation, extension, postponement, reprieve, time or respite to repay the debt, loan or mortgage)
- اِلَى — Elaa — Till (= To, towards, until)
- مَيۡسَرَةٍ — Mai-sa-ra-tin — Time of Ease (= Ability to pay off debt; abundance; a lot; easy times to repay; easy circumstances; times of ease and plenty)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Additionally; also; although; but. See وَ above)
- اَنۡ — Un — That (= Since. A/t/a ‘By way of’)
- تَصَدَّقُوۡا — Ta-sud-da-qoo — Remit as charity (= v. pl., Forgive, give; omit, waive or write off as a charity, alms or alms-giving)
- خَيۡرٌ — Khai-roon..(l) — Better (= Greater in reward; superior)
- لّ — La — For (= For the benefit, object, purpose or reason; with intent to)
- کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
- اِنۡ — In — If (= If the situation arises; in case; under the circumstances)
- كُنۡتُمۡ — Koon-toom — You had been (= Since the past have been; were continuously)
- تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Tau-la-moon — In the know of (= Aware; knowledgeable. A/t/a ‘Knew’ )
* Note 002:281. This verse lays down a Believer’s characteristic that has been translated
differently. ‘If your debtor be in straits, grant him a delay until he can discharge his debt’ [NJ Dawood]. ‘Remit [the debt] by way of charity [for the sake of God]’ [Allamah Nooruddin]. ‘If you are able, write off the debt as an act of charity’ [Ahmad Zidan].
