يٰۤـاَهۡلَ الۡكِتٰبِ لِمَ تُحَآجُّوۡنَ فِىۡۤ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ وَمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَتِ التَّوۡرٰٮةُ وَالۡاِنۡجِيۡلُ اِلَّا مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِهٖؕ اَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏

 

Yaa-aah-lul-kay-taa-bay-lay-ma-to-haaj-joo-na-fee                                                                Ib-raa-he-ma-wa-maa-oon-zay-la-tit-tao-raa-to-wul-in-jee-lo                                                  Il-laa-min-bau-day-he-aa-fa-laa-tau-qay-loo-n

 

“Listen the People of Book! why do you argue about                                                 Abraham when Torah and Bible were not entrusted                                                    Until after him. Won’t you then act wisely?”

 

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَهۡلَ — Aah-la…(ul) — People of (= Believers; citizens; folks; friends; masters; owners, people; population; supporters; those belonging to; those entrusted to; users)
  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Ul-Kay-taa-bay — The Book (= n., The Divine Directive of Commands, Prohibitions and Regulations. Holy Scripture. See 002:003)
  • لِمَ — Lay-ma — Why (= How come; what is the reason, why is it)
  • تُحَآجُّوۡنَ — To-haaj-joo-na — You argue (= v., pres., 2nd person. This has combined two words. The first word تُ (to = you) pin-points the addressee to 2nd person. The second is  حَآجُّوۡنَ (haaj-joo-na) means argue or fight verbally in vain, contend, debate, discuss unnecessarily without making a valid point, dispute or wrangle)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — About (= Concerning; in reference; for the sake of; in the matter of; regarding; relative to)
  • اِبۡرٰهٖمَ — Ib-raa-he-ma — Abraham (= Ibrahim; the name of a Messenger / Prophet of Allah.  See Commentary titled ‘Abraham was not an idolater’)
  • وَ — Wa — When (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; and; more over; though; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • اُنۡزِلَتِ — Oon-zay-la-t(it) — Entrusted  **  (= v., past., pass., s., 3rd person. Dispatched, given, granted, inspired; revealed. Handed, laid, lowered, revealed or sent down. Also, delivered; landed; provided; released; supplied. ** See Note 002:005a)
  • التَّوۡرٰٮةُ — Tau-raa-to — The Torah (= The Book, law, scripture or divine instructions that God entrusted to His Messenger and Prophet Moses p.o.h)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • الۡاِنۡجِيۡلُ — In-jee-lo — The Bible (= The Book, Gospel, law, scripture or divine instructions that God entrusted to His Messenger and Prophet Jesus p.o.h)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Until (= Except; unless)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class, category, count, kind of several articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • بَعۡدِ — Bau-day — After (= Afterwards; subsequent; succeeding)
  • هٖ — He — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to Abraham, p.o.h)
  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Question mark like  Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= As a result; consequently; hence; so; thereafter; therefore)
  • لَا — Laa Won’t (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation Abstaining, absent, being devoid, failing or refraining from action contemplated in the verb that follows, such as were unintelligent or senseless or unwise)
  • تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ — Tau-qay-loo-n — You act wisely  (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act intelligently, sensibly and smartly; understandSee Note 002:171.  A/t/a, Don’t or won’t ‘you understand.’ ‘Don’t be dumb,’  ‘Have you then no sense’ and ‘Have you no understanding’)
