The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                     003:068

 

مَا كَانَ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمُ يَهُوۡدِيًّا وَّلَا نَصۡرَانِيًّا وَّ لٰكِنۡ كَانَ حَنِيۡفًا مُّسۡلِمًا ؕ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ‏

 

Ma-kaa-na-ib-raa-he-mo-ya-hoo-de-yun-wa-laa-nus-raa-ne-yun                                      Wa-laa-kin-kaa-na-ha-nee-fun-moos-lay-mun                                                                         Wa-maa-kaa-na-may-nul-moosh-ray-keen

 

Abraham had never been a Jewish or Christian.                                                              But he had been truly righteous and obedient.                                                               And he had never been among the idolaters.

 

  • مَاۤ — Maa — Never (= Absolutely not; no; never)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — Had been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. This verb and its 14 grammatical variations indicate an act’s continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future)
  • اِبۡرٰهِيۡمُ — Ib-raa-he-mo — Abraham (= Ibrahim; the name of a Messenger / Prophet of Allah.  See Commentary titled ‘Abraham was not an idolater)
  • يَهُوۡدِيًّا — Ya-hoo-de-yun — Jewish (= Followers of Moses; children of Israel; Israelite)
  • وَّ — Wa — But (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; and also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Never; no; not at all)
  • نَصۡرَانِيًّا — Nus-raa-ne-yun — Christian (= Followers of Jesus Christ)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon
  • لٰـكِنۡ — Laa-kin — But (= However; instead; nevertheless; yet)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — Had been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continuing. See  كَانَ  above)
  • حَنِيۡفًا — Ha-nee-fun — Righteous (= s., Forever inclined to Allah. Always bent towards the Almighty God in worshiping Him. True in Faith. Upright. Worshiper of Only One God)
  • مُّسۡلِمًا — Moos-lay-mun — Obedient (= At peace with; endowed to; in absolute obedience and submission; in total surrender; servant; subservient; submissive; submitted; dedicated; devoted. Some translators have narrowed down this word to mean only ‘Those in Islam’, ‘Moslems’ or ‘Muslim’ which meanings will be subject to the same reprimand which appears in the early part of this verse )
  • وَ —  Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)

The next five (5) words are repeated in verses 002:136003:068 and 003:096

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Never (= Absolutely not; no; not at all)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — Had been (= v., Conveys continuation from the past to the present to the future – like ‘continued doing’ or ‘went on doing’)
  • مِنَ — May-n…(ul) — Among (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ — Moosh-ray-keen — The idolaters (= n., m., pl., Those who set up equals, partners, peers etc., with the Almighty God. Men who ascribe or associate and worship imaginary gods with the Almighty God. Unbelieving pagan men. See Note 004:037.
