يٰۤـاَهۡلَ الۡكِتٰبِ لِمَ تَلۡبِسُوۡنَ الۡحَـقَّ بِالۡبَاطِلِ وَتَكۡتُمُوۡنَ الۡحَـقَّ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

 

Yaa-aah-lul-kay-taa-bay-lay-ma-tul-bay-soo-na                                                                       Ul-huq-qa-bil-baa-tay-lay-wa-tuk-to-moo-na                                                                                 Ul-huq-qa-wa-un-toom-tau-la-moo-n

 

Listen the People of Book! why do you cover up                                                            The Truth with the falsehood and conceal                                                                        The Truth which you certainly know.

 

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَهۡلَ — Aah-la…(ul) — People of (= Believers; citizens; folks; friends; masters; owners, people; population; supporters; those belonging to; those entrusted to; users)
  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Ul-Kay-taa-bay — The Book (= n., The Divine Directive of Commands, Prohibitions and Regulations. Holy Scripture. See 002:003)
  • لِمَ — Lay-ma — Why (= How come; how is it; why is it)
  • تَلۡبِسُوۡنَ — Tul-bay-soo-na — Cover up (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Clothe; dress up; comfort; hide. A/t/a, deliberately, intentionally, openly and willfully confound, confuse, deny or flout. See Note 003:072 below)
  • الۡحَـقَّ — Ul-hq-qa — The Truth (= Appropriate; equitable; exactness; fair; fairness; just;  just cause; justification; justice; justified conduct; preciseness; proper; reasonableness; suitable. Right. The word is also used to mean Islam, the Right Faith)
  • بِ — Bay..(il) — With (= This word in Arabic literally means ‘with’)
  • الۡبَاطِلِ — Baa-tay-lay — Falsehood (= Crooked ways; deception; deceit; false means; false  pretenses and misrepresentations.  Incorrect info or statement; illusion; lies. A/t/a in ‘any illegal way’ like ‘deceiving, robbing or stealing’; in vanity)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; also; but; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • تَكۡتُمُوۡنَ — Tuk-to-moo-na(ul) — You conceal (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Hide; keep secret; keep under cover; shove or sweep under the carpet; suppress; withhold disclosing)
  • الۡحَـقَّ — Ul-hq-qa — The Truth (= Appropriate; equitable; exactness; fair; fairness; just;  just cause; justification; justice; justified conduct; preciseness; proper; reasonableness; suitable. Right. The word is also used to mean Islam, the Right Faith)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; also; but; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اَنۡ — Un– Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, decidedly;  definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; for sure; indeed; positively; really; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; truly; verily)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly
  • تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ — Tau-la-moon — You know (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. You are in the know of it; become aware; come to know; get informed; turn into knowing)

 

** Note 003:072. This basic meanings of the derivatives from the root  ل    ب   س  imply   covering, hiding and keeping secret … something which the context in the verse indicates.

The goal is to protect privacies such as will be injurious if made public or conditions due to weather, seasons or locales.

The means to reach the goals include putting on or wearing any abiliment, apparel, attire, body-cover, cloak, clothing, costume, covering, disguise, dress, garment, habiliment, mantle, outer gear, outfit, raiment or underwear, such as mentioned in verse 002:188.

The intent can be good such as to meet any necessity of life, seek comfort in living, or screen securing any situation, such as shown in verse 078:011.

The motive can be different such as to block or obstruct the view of something, or to camouflage, confound or confuse regarding it, or mislead from it as indicated in verses 003:072 and 006:010.

The following is the grammatical sequence how academicians refer to the derivates.

لَبَسَ — La-ba-sa — He covered (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Wore dress; clothed; dressed)

يَلۡبِسُ — Yul-bay-so — He covers (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Wears dress; clothes; dresses up)

لِبَاسٌ. — Lay-baa-soon — Cover (= n., Clothing; dress; garment)
