The Holy Qor-aan 003:143
اَمۡ حَسِبۡتُمۡ اَنۡ تَدۡخُلُوا الۡجَـنَّةَ وَلَمَّا يَعۡلَمِ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيۡنَ جَاهَدُوۡا مِنۡكُمۡ وَيَعۡلَمَ الصّٰبِرِيۡنَ
Um-ha-sib-toom-un-tud-kho-lool-jun-na-ta-wa-lum-maa Yau-la-mil-laa-hoo-la-zee-na-jaa-ha-doo-min-koom Wa-yau-la-mus-saa-bay-ree-n
Have you thought that you will enter the Paradise and surely when Allah exposes those who among you strove hard, And exposes the Perseverant.
{The question framed in the first eight words of verses 002:215 and 003:143 is the same}
- اَمۡ — Um — Did (= Question mark such as could, did, have, should, were, or would? Also, or, alternatively; in the alternative)
- حَسِبۡ — Ha-sib — Thought (= v., past., m., 2nd person., Considered, counted, imagined, reckoned or supposed. A/t/a, ‘Deemed ye.’ The Holy Qor-aan stated this fact in the past tense and it is inaccurate to translate it in the present tense as ‘Do you suppose you will,’ ‘Do ye think that ye would’ and ‘Do you reckon’)
- تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
- اَنۡ — Un — That (= Since; so that; for the purpose of)
- تَدۡخُلُوا — Tud-kho-loo(l) — You’ll enter (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person., Be admitted; be allowed; gain admission)
- الۡجَـنَّةَ — Jun-na-ta — The Paradise (= n., s., Big grove; Coppice. Thicket. Garden of ultimate and everlasting beauty and greenery. Place of immense beauty, peace and tranquility which is beyond human comprehension. The Heaven. The Orchard. Generally the ‘location on very fertile ground’ is added into the extrapolations of this word. See our Commentary titled as The Paradise)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also, more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
- لَمَّا — Lum-maa — Surely when (= This combines two words. The first word لَ (= la) means absolutely, certainly, positively, surely, truly or verily. The second word ما (= maa) means any time, at such time, when and whenever. A/t/a, ‘While yet’)
- يَعۡلَمِ — Yau-la-mi…(la) — He exposes (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. This word when used with the name of Allah means He adds to knowledge, discloses, distinguishes, divulges, informs and more as shown in 003:141. But ‘not yet distinguished,’ ‘not yet caused to be distinguished,’ ‘not yet caused to be known,’ ‘has proved’ and ‘not yet known’ are not accurate translations for reasons stated in verse 003:141)
- اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho(ol) — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. All those articles, things or persons)
- جَاهَدُوۡا — Jaa-ha-doo — Strove hard (= v., past., p., 3rd person., Fought; strived or worked hard; struggled. This word refers to those who had acted so previously. A/t/a, ‘who fought,’ ‘fought hard,’ and ‘remained steadfast.’ The Holy Qor-aan has used this word in the past tense; so it is not accurate to translate it in the present tense as ‘who strive hard,’ ‘strive in the way of Allah’ and ‘strive in the cause of Allah’)
- مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category or several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
- كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You. See تُمۡ above)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
- —- Will not (The word لَمَّا used just before the verb يَعۡلَمِ earlier in the verse and is مخفف (hidden) here. Thus it also applies to the verb يَعۡلَمِ that comes next)
- يَعۡلَمَ — Yau-la-ma..(us) — He exposes (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. See يَعۡلَمِ above, This word refers to those who are acting so presently)
- الصّٰبِرِيۡنَ — Saa-bay-ree-na — Perseverant (= n., Consistent; constant; insistent; patient; persistent; pursuant; steadfast; those who patiently persevere with continuity, endurance, fortitude and regular repetitions and show above characteristics with no failing, flailing falling or faltering; unwavering. Those who are patient in the adversity, tribulations and times of stress)
** Note 003:143. The words لم (lum) and لَن (lunn) mean no, none, do not, does not and their variations. These words when followed by a verb in the present tense have sometime been translated as a verb in the past tense like in verse 003:143 among others. This site follows the common sense and has translated a verb in the present tense into a verb in the present tense — and not in the opposite way inaccurately as some authors have done.
** Note 003:143a. This verse has used the ver b يَعۡلَمِ twice; 1st time in the middle and 2nd time towards the end. Some authors translated the word لَمَّا (lum-maa) as ‘will not’ when it came before the 1st appearance of the verb يَعۡلَمِ, and then added the same translation by presuming that it was ‘hidden’ ( مخفف) before the word يَعۡلَمَ came up 2nd time. This site translates the actual words of God Almighty as they are put in the Holy Qor-aan and does not bring in human improvements by presuming the existence of some words as if they were ‘hidden’ (مخفف) there.
