Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                       003:144

 

وَلَقَدۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَمَنَّوۡنَ الۡمَوۡتَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِ اَنۡ تَلۡقَوۡهُ فَقَدۡ رَاَيۡتُمُوۡهُ وَاَنۡتُمۡ تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ

 

 

Wa-la-qud-koon-toom-ta-mun-nao-nul-mao-ta                                                                       Min-qub-lay-un-tool-qoo-ho                                                                                                             Fa-qud-ra-aiy-to-moo-ho-wa-un-toom-tun-zo-roo-n

 

And certainly you have been wishing for death                                                             Before your coming across it.                                                                                               Then surely you saw it and you were looking for it.

  

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely, doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis. Absolutely; categorically; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; specially; doubtlessly; obviously; for sure; in spite of; positively; specifically; verily; with no doubt whatsoever)
  • كُن — Koon — Have been (= Have since previously been. A/t/a, ‘used to’)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • تَمَنَّوۡنَ — Ta-mun-nao-na..(ul) — Wishing (= v., present participle, pl., 2nd person., Asking; choosing; craving; desiring; going for; invoking; longing; seeking; selecting; wanting. A/t/a inaccurately in the past tense as ‘you desired’)
  • الۡمَوۡتَ –Mao-ta — Death (= n., After life has ended; downfall; end of life on earth; extinction; stupor. Total desolateness, demolition, destruction or ruin. A/t/a in a battle, fight or war, ‘God’s cause,’ ‘way to please God,’ ‘type of death,’ or ‘(jihad and a martyr’s) death’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — Since (= From the time)
  • قَبۡلُ –  Qub-lo — Before (= Aforetime; ahead of; antecedent; earlier than; former time; older times; occurred or passed in prior period; previously; prior to; Moses was questioned of old)
  • اَنۡ — Un — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; verily)
  • تَلۡقَو — Tool-qoo — Your coming across (= v., present participle., pl., 2nd person., Casting; lowering down to; meeting; pushing; putting down)
  • هُ — Ho — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid death. A/t/a  ‘him’ as if the pronoun referred to a man)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= At the end; as a result; consequently; hence; so; then; thereafter; therefore)
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis. Absolutely; categorically; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; specially; doubtlessly; obviously; for sure; in spite of; positively; specifically; verily; with no doubt whatsoever)
  • رَاَيۡ — Ray-aiy — Saw (= v., past., pl., 3rd person., beheld; came across face to  face with it; experienced; faced; observed; seen; took notice; watched. With no corresponding words in the original text, one translator added, “Now that you have encountered it in all its aspects, there is no cause for any of you to hold back”)
  • تُمُو — To-moo — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly
  • هُ — Ho — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid death. A/t/a [aya] ‘him’ as if the pronoun referred to a man)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اَنۡ — Un — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; verily
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly)
  • تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ — Tun-zo-roo-n — Looking for (= v., pres., pl. 2nd person. Beholding. Gazing. Looking, surveying and watching with a commanding view of all you could see. Observing.  Seeing with naked eyes.  Taking notice of.  Watching right before your eyes. Within your sight as you looked on.  You witnessed dazed as you gazed.  Also, this word in different context means awaiting, considering, contemplating, having regard, looking for, reflecting, thinking about, waiting and watching for. A/t/a with some additions:-  ‘While you were actually looking for it,’  ‘With your own eyes,’  ‘What it is like,’  ‘You will see yet (many more wonders happen),’  ‘Why do some of you seek to avoid it,’  ‘You were looking on,’  ‘Now ye have seen him with your own eyes (and ye flinch!’)
