The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                           003:179

 

وَلَا يَحۡسَبَنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اَنَّمَا نُمۡلِىۡ لَهُمۡ خَيۡرٌ لِّاَنۡفُسِهِمۡ‌ؕ  اِنَّمَا نُمۡلِىۡ لَهُمۡ لِيَزۡدَادُوۡۤا اِثۡمًا‌ ۚ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ مُّهِيۡنٌ‏

 

Wa-laa yah-sa-bun-nul-la-ze-na-ka-fa-roo                                                                                    Un-na-maa-noom-lee-la-hoom-khai-roon-lay-un-fo-say-him                                                    In-na-maa-noom-lee-la-hoom-lay-yuz-daa-do-ith-mun                                                            Wa-la-hoom-azaa-boom-mo-hee-n

 

And those who disbelieved must not think                                                                        Most certainly We postpone punishing them for the good of their souls.            Most certainly We postpone it for them so that they increase in sin.                      And destined for them is a humiliating punishment.

             

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • يَحۡسَبَنَّ — Yah-sa-bu-na(ul) — They think (= v., pres., m., 3rd person. Assume; believe; chew over; cogitate; conjecture; consider; construe; contemplate; count; deem; deliberate; feel; guess; guesstimate; imagine; judge; mull; muse; reason; reckon; reflect; ruminate; suppose; think over; weigh. A/t/a, ‘And let not … think’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those in masculine gender that include all articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • كَفَرُوۡا — Ka-fa-roo — Disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islam and become Moslem. Many authors have translated this and the prior word together as ‘disbelievers’ or ‘unbelievers’)
  • أَنَّمَآ — Un-na-maa– Most certainly (= Combination of two words. The first word أَنَّٓ (unna) means absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily. The second word مَاۤ (maa) means all that, what; whatever; whatsoever. Thus اَنَّمَا (unna-maa) lays great emphasis on the statement that follows it as absolutely, positively and most certainly accurate’)
  • نُمۡلِىۡ — Noom-lee — We postpone (= v., pres., 1st person. Delay; extend; give extension;  A/t/a, ‘our granting them respite,’  ‘our respite To them,’  ‘the rein We give,’   ‘the result of Our granting them respite,’ and ‘prolong their days’)
  • لَ — La — For (= Because of; concerning; due to; for the object, purpose or reason of; intended for; on account of; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, belonging to; to; towards)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to the disbelievers)
  • خَيۡرٌ — Khai-roon — Good (= n., Advantageous; beneficial; constructive; favorable;  helpful; positive; valuable. A/t/a, ‘better’ or ‘bodeth good unto their souls’)
  • لِ — Lay — For (= The same as  لَ  above)
  • الۡاَنۡفُسِ — Un-fo-say — Souls (= n., pl., Hearts; individuals; minds; own sake; persons;  selves)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to the disbelievers)
  • اِنَّمَا — In-na-maa — Most certainly (= Combination of two words. The first word اِنَّ (inna) means absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily. The second word مَاۤ (maa) means all that, what;  whatever. whatsoever. Thus اِنَّمَا (inna-maa) lays great emphasis on the statement that follows it as absolutely, positively and most certainly accurate’)
  • نُمۡلِىۡ — Noom-lee — We postpone   (= v., pres., 1st person. Delay; extend; give extension. A/t/a, ‘grant them respite’ [ays, mma]. See نُمۡلِىۡ above)
  • لَ —  La — For (= The same as  لَ  above)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid people hastening towards disbelief)
  • لِ — Lay — For (= The same as  لَ  above)
  • يَزۡدَادُوۡۤا — Yuz-daa-doo — Increase (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Add; beef up; grow; multiply)
  •  اِثۡمًا‌ — Ith-mun — Sin (= n., An act of disobedience; doing wrong; sinfulness  committed continually, incessantly and repeatedly. A/t/a, ‘We grant them respite but they do no avail it, with the result that they add to their sins,’ ‘grow in wickedness’ and ‘grow in their inequity’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَ — La — For (= The same as  لَ  above)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid people hastening towards disbelief)
  • عَذَابٌ — Azaa-boon — Punishment (= Appropriate, due and fair agony, chastisement, doom, hard task, penalty, recompense; torment, torture or scourge)
  • مُّهِيۡنٌ‏ — Mo-heen — Humiliating (= adj., Abasing; debasing; degrading; demeaning; disgraceful; insulting; mortifying; shameful; unbecoming; undignified)
