The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                         004:009

 

وَاِذَا حَضَرَ الۡقِسۡمَةَ اُولُوا الۡقُرۡبٰى وَالۡيَتٰمٰى وَالۡمَسٰكِيۡنُ فَارۡزُقُوۡهُمۡ مِّنۡهُ وَقُوۡلُوۡا لَهُمۡ قَوۡلًا مَّعۡرُوۡفًا‏

 

Wa-ezaa-ha-dza-rul-qis-ma-ta                                                                                                            O-lool-qoor-baa-wul-ya-taa-maa-wul-ma-saa-kee-no                                                                  Fur-zo-qoo-hoom-min-ho                                                                                                                  Wa-qoo-loo-la-hoom-qao-lum-mau-roo–faa

 

And if came to the distribution                                                                                                The relatives, orphans and poor                                                                                             Then provide for them from it                                                                                                And say to them an appropriate word

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but  also; more over; though; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اِذَاۤ — Ezaa — If (= At any time, event or occasion or opportunity; when. Also, behold; call to mind, consider; ponder; recall; reflect; remember or think of the time, event, now that; take into consideration)
  • حَضَرَ — Ha-dza-ra..(ul) — Came to (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Appeared; attended; arrived; presented; visited. The translation ‘are present’ is inaccurate as it is in the present tense whereas the Holy Qor-aan has used this verb in the past tense)
  • ٱلۡقِسۡمَةَ — (U)l-qis-ma-ta — Distribution (= n., Division or partition of the property in inheritance. A/t/a, ‘division of heritage,‘  ‘division of the heritage’ and  ‘division of inheritance’)
  • اُولُوا الۡقُرۡبٰى  O-lool-qoor-baa  Relatives (= n., These are two words combined; the first اُولُوا (o-loo) means of, endowed with, master, owner or those who have; the second ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ (qoor-baa) means the closest or nearest. The combination in the context of the verse refers to the relatives or relations who are biologically the nearest and the closest relations who are not the Sharers or the Residuary. Also, kith and kin. A/t/a, ‘kinsmen,’  ‘kinsfolk,’  ‘relatives’ and ‘other relations’)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • ٱلۡيَتَـٰمَىٰٓ — Ya-taa-maa — The orphans (= n., pl., Kids with no parent; children without one or both parents. Generally refers to the helpless or destitute)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • ٱلۡمَسَـٰڪِينُ — Ma-saa-kee-no — Poor (= n., pl., Abjectly poor; destitute; homeless; hungry with no food to eat; one of the have-not’s; needy; unable to fend for themselves. A/t/a, ‘needy men’)
  • فَ — Fa…(ur) — Then (= So; consequently; finally; thereafter; therefore)
  •  ٱرۡزُقُو — (U)r-zo-qoo — Provide (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Feed; give; pay. A/t/a, ‘bestow on,’  ‘give them too,’  ‘give them something therefrom,‘  ‘give them also something out of it,’  ‘give them something from it’ and ‘make provision for’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to the poor)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Out of)
  • هُ — Ho — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid distribution)

  • لَ — La — To / For (= For the object, purpose or reason of; intended for)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom  — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. See  هُمۡ  above)
  • قَوۡلاً — Qao-lun — Word (= n., Announcement; assertion; broadcast; conveyance; call; explanation; exposition; information; statement; saying; specification; speech; submission)
  • مَّعۡرُوفً۬ا — Mau-roo-faa — Appropriate (= As a noun anything that is appropriate, customary, decent, equitable, fair, graceful, honorable, just, kind, legal, proper, reasonable, suitable or within rights. As an adjective appropriately, beautifully, decently, equitably, fairly, gracefully, gratefully, gratuitously, honorably, lawfully, nicely, properly, reasonably, righteously, rightfully or suitably. A/t/a, ‘words of kindness and justice,’ ‘advise them to enjoin right,’ ‘give them good advice,’ ‘kindly,’ ‘words of kind advice,’  ‘kind advice’ or ‘give them a good education’)
