وَ كَيۡفَ تَاۡخُذُوۡنَهٗ وَقَدۡ اَفۡضٰى بَعۡضُكُمۡ اِلٰى بَعۡضٍ وَّاَخَذۡنَ مِنۡكُمۡ مِّيۡثَاقًا غَلِيۡظًا

 

Wa-kai-fa-tau-kho-zoo-na-hoo-wa-qud-uf-dzaa                                                                            Bau-dzo-koom-elaa-bau-dzin-wa                                                                                                        Aa-khuz-na-min-koom-me-thaa-qun-gha-lee-zaa

 

And how could you take it back and surely                                                                      Some of you had benefited from the other and                                                                They (the wives) took from you a serious promise

           

  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • كَيۡفَ — Kai-fa — How (= How about. How would it be, do or fare. What would it    look. In what fashion, manner, method or in which way
  • تَاۡخُذُوۡنَ — Tau-kho-zoo-na — Take back (= v., pl., 2nd person. Seize. Recover. Withdraw.  Refers to taking back forcibly or menacingly any part of the dowry or gifts given to wife. A/t/a, ‘take it back’)
  • هٗ — Hoo — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid gift)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • قَدۡ  — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis. Absolutely; categorically; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; specially; doubtlessly; obviously; for sure; in spite of; positively; specifically; verily; with no doubt whatsoever)
  • اَفۡضٰى — Uf-dzaa — Benefited (= v., past, 2nd person. Depart, go away, leave or quit after  having benefited from or taken advantage. A/t/a, ‘had been alone,’ ‘consorted’ and ‘lain.’  This and the next five words have been translated also as ‘one of you has already gone in to the other,’ ‘hath gone in unto the other,’ ‘have gone in unto each other,’ ‘lain with each other’ and ‘each of you has been privily with the other’)
  • بَعۡضُ — Bau-dzo — Some (= A few; a part; piece; fraction; portion; others. A/t/a, ‘together’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men)
  • اِلٰى — Elaa — To / from (= In the direction of; to; towards)
  • بَعۡضِ — Bau-dzin — Some (= A few; a part; piece; fraction; portion; others)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اَخَذۡنَ — Aa-khuz-na — They took (= v., past., f., pl., 3rd person. Grasped; had taken; seized. A/t/a, ‘entered’ and ‘bound … down.’ This verb for the female, plural, third person refers to he wives mentioned in the preceding verse)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You . See  كُمۡ  above)
  • مِّيۡثَاقًا — Me-thaa-qun — Promise (= n., Assurance; confirmation; contract; covenant; pact; pledge; serious undertaking; solemn affirmation. A/t/a, ‘covenant (by marriage)’
  • غَلِيۡظًا — Gha-lee-zaa — Serious (= Adj., Binding; established and ratified terms; hard; harsh; rigid; solid; stiff; strong. Also, inflexible and unbreakable. A/t/a, ‘firm,’ ‘firm and solemn,’ ‘solemn’ and ‘firm and strong’)
