وَّالۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ مِنَ النِّسَآءِ اِلَّا مَا مَلَـكَتۡ اَيۡمَانُكُمۡ‌ۚ   كِتٰبَ اللّٰهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ‌ۚ   وَاُحِلَّ لَـكُمۡ مَّا وَرَآءَ  ذٰ لِكُمۡ اَنۡ تَبۡتَـغُوۡا بِاَمۡوَالِكُمۡ مُّحۡصِنِيۡنَ غَيۡرَ مُسَافِحِيۡنَ‌ ؕ  فَمَا اسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُمۡ بِهٖ مِنۡهُنَّ فَاٰ تُوۡهُنَّ اُجُوۡرَهُنَّ فَرِيۡضَةً‌ ؕ  وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِيۡمَا تَرٰضَيۡـتُمۡ بِهٖ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ الۡـفَرِيۡضَةِ‌ ؕ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلِيۡمًا حَكِيۡمًا‏

 

Wul-moh-sa-naa-to-may-nun-nay-saa-aiy                                                                                      Il-laa-ma-ma-la-cut-aiy-maa-no-koom                                                                                            Kay-taa-baul-laa-hay-alai-koom

Wa-o-hil-la-koom-maa-wa-raa-aa-zaa-lay-koom                                                                          Un-tub-ta-ghoo-bay-um-waa-lay-koom                                                                                            Moh-say-nee-na-ghai-ra-mo-saa-fay-he-na

Fa-mus-tau-toom-bay-he-min-hoon-na                                                                                          Fa-aa-too-hon-na-o-jo-ra-hoon-na-fa-re-dza-ton

Wa-laa-jo-naa-ha-alai-koom-fee-maa                                                                                              Ta-raa-zai-toom-min-bau-dil-fa-re-dza-tay                                                                                    In-nul-laa-ha-kaa-na-alee-mun-ha-key-maa

 

And forbidden to you are already                                                                                    Chaste from among the women                                                                                              Except what your right hands had owned.                                                                       Allah’s Commandment is upon you.

And allowed for you is what is beyond                                                                                So that you seek with your assets                                                                                            Being virtuous without fornicating

Thus because of what benefits you seek from them with it                                          So you give them their dowers as an obligation.

And no sin on you in what                                                                                                          You both be pleased after filling the obligation.                                                              Surely Allah has always been Very Knowing, Very Merciful 

 

  • وَّ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon. A/t/a ‘You are also forbidden to take in marriage’)
  • الۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ — Moh-sa-naa-to — Chaste women (= n., f., pl., Faithfully pure, spotless, unblemished, uncorrupted and unsullied women. This word has become synonymous with the married women whom marriage has taken to higher moral levels, to become chaste, pious and virtuous, and has harnessed to them their urges for procreation and surges for recreation. A/t/a, ‘already married women who are in a wedlock’ and ‘all married women’)
  • مِنَ — May-na…(un) — From among (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • النِّسَآءِ — Nay-saa-aiy — The women (= Females of the mankind. A/t/a, ‘(captives)’)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless)

{The next 4 words are in several verses: See 004:004}

  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever; whom; whomever.  Everything of value including one’s time, talent, energy, abilities, potentials and every kind of physical assets, money, property, possessions and wealth. A/t/a, ‘Yet those’ and ‘such’
  • مَلَكَتۡ — Ma-la-kut — Had owned (= v., past., f., 3rd person. Held in ownership or some sort of servitude. The phrase made up four words is used in the Holy Qor-aan in verses such as 004:004, 004:025, 004:026, 023:007, 024:034 and 070:031. The simple and straightforward translation of this phrase is given above. The Holy Qor-aan described the action in this phrase by a verb in the past tense, but some authors translated it wrongly in the present tense. The disgrace of slavery deprecated universally is discussed in our our Commentary The Slavery, but its continuation has been insinuated by translating this phrase as follows:-                                                                         — ‘whom your right hands possess,’                                                                                               — ‘such as your right hands possess,’                                                                                              —  ‘(slaves) … your right hands possess,’                                                                                        — ‘those who have passed into your hands as prisoners,’                                                          ‘such as your right hands possess (taken as Holy war  captives),’                                        — ‘captives whom you own as slaves,’                                                                                            — ‘(captives) whom your right hands possess,’                                                                            — ‘captives whom you own as slaves,’ and                                                                                     — ‘(captives in war) whom your right hands possess (are permitted to you for marriage even if not formally divorced by their husbands, since their captivity is equivalent to divorce).’
  • اَيۡمَانُ –Aiy-maa-no — Right hands (= n., pl., The word refers to all that one owns, possesses, controls or over what one has the controlling authority. Since everyone can have only one right hand, the word ‘right hands’ in plural really reflects two persons who have mutually agreed and confirmed by shaking their right hands and acknowledged as to what each of them had owned or would do. See also 004:004)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You all men)
  • كِتٰبَ — Kay-taa-ba(ul) — Commandment (= n., The Divine directive of commands. Holy Scripture. A Directive that holds good and is operative eternally. Decreed part of a religion. Spiritual Code codifying the rules of universal application.  2. The Collection of mandated, ordered, prescribed, preserved, recorded, written Do’s and Don’ts.  3. Authentic penned down material in black and white.                                       The reading of the next three words along with its correct translation as a noun is as follows.                                                                                                                                                — ‘This is the Commandment of Allah,’                                                                                        — ‘Such is the decree of Allah,’                                                                                                        — ‘It is a decree of Allah,’                                                                                                                  — ‘(this is) Allah’s ordinance to you,’                                                                                              — ‘these are the Commands of God,’ and                                                                                      — ‘This is the law prescribed,’                                                                                                   The  reading of the next three words along with its incorrect translation as a verb in the past tense is as follows.                                                                                                                     — ‘Thus hath God ordained (Prohibitions),’                                                                                 — ‘Thus has Allah ordained for you’ and                                                                                     — ‘This has Allah enjoined on you.’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai —  Upon (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; to; over; upon)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. You / your)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اُحِلَّ — O-hil-la — Allowed (= v., pass., past., 3rd person. Accepted; allowed; approved; authorized; legalized; licensed; permitted; made lawful. Also, declared appropriate, kosher or proper. A/t/a, ‘lawful’ which is a noun and not the translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has used a verb in the past tense in the passive voice)
  • لَ — La — For (= Because of; concerning; due to; for the object, purpose or reason of; intended for; on account of; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, belonging to; to; towards)
  • كُمۡ  — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men)
  • مَّا — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a ‘those’)
  • وَرَآءَ — Wa-raa-aa  — Beyond (= Across; at the back; behind; besides; far away; from behind; no more visible; out of sight. A/t/a, ‘All women other than these,’ ‘(all women) besides those’ and ‘outside’)
  • ذٰلِكُمۡ — Zaa-lay-koom — That for you (= This or that is for you. A/t/a, ‘those mentioned and ‘these categories’)
  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= Due to; for the reason or purpose; since; so that; that.  A/t/a, ‘provided’)
  • تَبۡتَغُوۡا — Tub-ta-ghoo — You seek (= v., pres., m., pl., 2nd person. Aspire; crave; desire; want; wish. A/t/a ‘Ye seek them,’ ‘you seek (their hands)’ and ‘you seek them’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with gifts from your property,’ ‘by means of’ and ‘using’)
  • اَمۡوَالِ — Um-waa-lay — Assets (= n., pl., Affluence; gains; goods; money; property;  possessions; riches; resources; substance; valuables; wealth. Ostensible means and signs of all above. Also, contacts, influences, resources and valuables.  A/t/a, ‘wealth (-by granting dowers),’ ‘properties’ and ‘Mahr (bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) from your property.’ See also Note 002:262)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You / your)
  • مُّحۡصِنِيۡنَ — Moh-say-nena — Being virtuous (= n., m., pl. Being righteous and marrying. Going after chastity and piety. Becoming faithful, pure, spotless, unblemished or unsullied. A/t/a, ‘desiring chastity,’ ‘chastity,’ ‘marrying properly,’ taking them in marriage,’ ‘in marriage,’ ‘in modest conduct’ and ‘in honest wedlock.’ See الۡمُحۡصَنٰتُ  above) )
  • غَيۡرَ — Ghai-ra — Without (= Besides; else; excluding; not; other than; out of; prohibiting)
  • مُسَافِحِيۡنَ‌ — Mo-saa-fay-he-na — Fornicating (= n., m., pl. Going after and seeking sex, lust and no marriage. A/t/a, ‘committing fornication,’ ‘(committing fornication) to pursue your lust,’ ‘debauchery’ and ‘committing illegal sexual intercourse’)
  • فَ — Fa — Thus (= Hence; so; since; at the end; in conclusion; in the final analysis; consequently; finally; resultantly; therefore)
  • مَاۤ — Maa..(us) — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever; who; whoever; whom)
  • اسۡتَمۡتَعۡ — (U)s-tum-tau — Seek benefits (= v., m., 2nd person. Get, have, pursue or seek in benefits.  A/t/a, ‘ye seek content (by marrying them),’ ‘ye derive benefit,’ ‘the benefit you receive,’ ‘the benefit that you receive,‘ ‘such wives as you enjoy thereby,’ ‘the benefit you draw from them (by marriage),’ ‘for the enjoyment you have had of them’ and ‘whom you profit (by marrying).’ Unfortunately and without any factual basis, the   translation ‘with those of whom you have enjoyed sexual relations’ appears to allow premarital sex)
  • تُمُ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men)
  • بِ — Bay — With  (= Literally the word بِ  means with
  • هٖ — He — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the wealth or gifts)
  • مِنۡ — Min —  From (= Among, from or out of the class of women)
  • هُنَّ — Hoon-na — Them (= pl, f, 3rd person. Reference to the wives. A/t/a, ‘with those of whom’)
  • فَ — Fa — Thus (= Hence; so; thus; after all this; therefore. See فَ above) )
  • اۡتُوا — Aa-too — You give (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Deliver; pay. Also, adduce; approach with; bring; come with; display; produce; show)
  • هُنَّ — Hoon-na — Them (= pl, f, 3rd person. Reference to the wives)
  • اُجُوۡرَ — O-joo-ra — Dowers (= n., pl. Awards; compensations; good results; payments; prizes; recognitions; recompense; rewards; successes; trophies. A/t/a ‘dowers,’ ‘dowries,’ ‘portions’ and ‘Mahr‘)
  • هُنَّ — Hoon-na — Them (= pl, f, 3rd person. Reference to the wives)
  • فَرِيۡضَةً — Fa-ree-dza-ton — As an obligation (= Bridal money; dower money; dowry; marriage gift; marriage portion. Mandated obligation, portion or share of the consideration required to form a valid marriage contract under Moslem law. Also, the Holy Qor-aan has used this noun but inaccurate translations as a verb are ‘as appointed,’ ‘as prescribed,’ ‘as fixed,’ ‘as have been fixed’ and ‘as a duty’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘will be no’)
  • جُنَاحَ — Jo-naa-ha — Sin (= Blame; inappropriate conduct; crime; illegal; misdeed; harm; offence; wrong; violation of a Prohibition)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; over; to; upon)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You . See كُمۡ  above)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= About; concerning; in reference, regarding; relative to. The word also means amidst; among; belonging; inside or contained in a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation. A/t/a, ‘concerning (the provision for)’ and ‘in respect of’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever; who; whoever. A/t/a, anything’ and ‘(increasing or decreasing the amount of dower) which you (-husband and wife)’
  • تَرٰضَيۡ — Ta-raa-dzai — Both be pleased (= v., pres., m & f., 2nd person. Negotiate. A/t/a, ‘mutually (to vary it),’ ‘mutually agree,’ ye do by mutual agreement,’ ‘to make any other agreement,’ ‘you do by mutual agreement’ and ‘you agree mutually (to give more)’ )
  • تُمُ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See مِنۡ above))
  • بَعۡدِ — Bau-d..(il) — After (= Subsequent to; succeeding generations. The difference  is distinct in translating this after into after filling as translated above and after fixing or after paying as done by many authors)
  • الۡـفَرِيۡضَةِ‌ — Fa-ree-dza-tay — The obligation (= n., Part, portion or share of what has been directed or ordered as the bridal gift, dower money, dowry or marriage gift. See فَرِيۡضَةً  above. A/t/a, ‘what is appointed (of dowry),’ ‘the fixing of the dowry,’ ‘the fixing of the dower’ and ‘Mahr is prescribed’)
  • اِنَّ — In-na…(ul) — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed;       really; surely; truly; verily)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — Has always been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; always had been; used to; were, went on doing)
  • عَلِيۡمًا — Alee-mun — Very Knowing (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him knows or is knowing. Informed to the maximum. Has total and perfect knowledge. Has nothing out of sight. Knows all. Nothing whatever is beyond or out of His knowing. Well-Acquainted. Well-Aware. Most Knowledgeable). A/t/a,’ever Knower’]
  • حَكِيۡمًا‏ — Ha-key-maa — Very Wise (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him is Exalted in wisdom. Best Possessor of wisdom. Extremely shrewd. Full of wisdom. The Wisest)
