The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                  004:033

 

وَلَا تَتَمَنَّوۡا مَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰهُ بِهٖ بَعۡضَكُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ‌ ؕ لِلرِّجَالِ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّمَّا اكۡتَسَبُوۡا ؕ‌  وَلِلنِّسَآءِ نَصِيۡبٌ مِّمَّا اكۡتَسَبۡنَ‌ ؕ  وَسۡئَـلُوا اللّٰهَ مِنۡ فَضۡلِهٖ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَىۡءٍ عَلِيۡمًا‏

 

Wa-laa-ta-ta-mun-nao-maa-fudz-dzal-laa-ho-bay-he                                                                Bau-dzo-koom-alaa-bau-dzin                                                                                                            Lir-ray-jaa-lay-na-see-boom-mim-muk-ta-sa-boo-wa                                                              Lin-nay-saa-aiy-na-see-boom-mim-muk-ta-sub-na                                                                    Wus-aa-lool-laa-ha-min-fudz-lay-he                                                                                                  In-nul-laa-ha-bay-kool-lay-shai-in-alee-maa

 

And do not feel jealous for what Allah has blessed                                                    Some of you over some others.                                                                                                For men is a share out of what they have earned and                                                    For women is a share out of what they have earned.                                                      And you ask Allah from His abundance.                                                                              Allah has always been All-Knowing of everything.            

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَا —  Laa — Do not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • تَتَمَنَّوۡا — Ta-ta-mun-nao — Feel jealous (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Ask; choose; crave, covet; desire; envy; go for; invoke; long; pull for; pursue; push; seek; select; want or wish to have)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘those things’ and ‘by which’)
  • فَضَّلَ — Fudz-dzul-laa — Blessed (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Benefited; bestowed; conferred; endowed; gave; granted; gifted; preferred; Gave the abundance and plenteousness. A/t/a, ‘hath bestowed His gifts more freely,’ ‘made…excel,’ ‘bestowed in bounties,’ ‘exalted’ and ‘has bestowed’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with)
  • هٖ — He — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)

   {Next 4 words are somewhat like those in verse 003:196, 004:035, etc}

  • بَعۡضُ — Bau-dzo — Some (= A few; a fraction, part, piece or portion; less than all)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person., You men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly that way )
  • عَلٰى — Alaa — In preference To (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; upon. A/t/a, ‘more than,’ ‘some of you above others,’ ‘some of you excel others’ and ‘to excel others’)
  • بَعۡضٍ — Bau-dzin — Some others (= A few; a fraction, part; piece; portion. See بَعۡضُ above)

  • لِ — Lay..(ir) — For (= Concerning; due to; for the object, purpose or reason of; intended for; regarding; relative to; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘is allotted,’ ‘shall have,’ ‘to,’shall be rewarded’ and ‘unto’)
  • لرِّجَالِ — Ray-jaa-lay — Men (= n., Male of the mankind; male of the human beings)
  • نَصِيبٌ۬ — Na-see-boon — A share (= n., Part; portion; section; less than the whole. A/t/a, ‘a fortune,’ ‘benefit,’ ‘reward’ and recompense)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-ma..(uk) — Out of what (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ (min)  means among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things. The second word  مَاۤ (maa) means all that, what or whatever. See 002:203)  
  • اكۡتَسَبُوۡا — Uk-ta-sa-boo — They earned (= v., past., m., pl., 3rd person. All those men earned. A/t accurately as ‘earned’ by some authors. But some authors have translated this word inaccurately (a) as ‘earn’ and ‘have… the fruit of their labour’ which are in   the present tense verb because the Holy Qor-aan has used this verb in the past tense and (b) as ‘shall be rewarded for their labours’ [njd] which is in passive voice because the Holy Qor-aan has used this verb in the active voice)

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above.  A/t/a, ‘(likewise)’
  • لِ — Lay…(in) — For (= Concerning; due to; for the object … See  لِ above)

  • نَصِيبٌ۬ — Na-see-boon — A share (= n., Part; portion; section. See نَصِيبٌ۬ above)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-ma..(uk) — From what (= Combination of two words.  See مِمَّا above)
  • اكۡتَسَبۡنَ‌ — Uk-ta-sub-na — They earned (= v., past., f., pl., 3rd person. All those women earned. A/t accurately as ‘earned’ by some authors. But some authors have translated this word inaccurately as shown for اكۡتَسَبُوۡا  above)
  • وَ — Wa..(us) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • سۡئَـلُوا — (U)s-aa-loo — You ask (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Beseech, beg, crave, desire,  implore, pray or wish to have; seek. A/t/a, ‘(Envy not one another) but ask’ and ‘You had better seek’)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God. A/t/a, ‘Allah alone’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • فَضۡلِ — Fudz-lay — Abundance (= n., Bounty; generosity; gift; goodness; grace; grant. Also, giving, granting or gifting of abundance and plenteousness. A/t/a, ‘to bestow on you His gifts’)
  • هٖ — He — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • اِنَّ — In-na…(ul) — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed;      positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — He has been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been;  used to; were, went on doing. Indicates the act’s continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future)
  • بِ  — Bay — With / Of (= Literally the word بِ  means with. Also, about, in or of)
  • كُلِّ — Kool-lay — Every (= All; altogether; each and every thing with no exception; in all manners; total; very much; whole. Also, entirely; exceedingly; greatly, highly; totally; wholly)
  • شَىۡءٍ — Shai-in –Thing (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit. Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object, material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To the least extent. Also, Some, something or somewhat. A/t/a, ‘all things’ in the plural whereas the Holy Qor-aan has used this word in the singular)
  • عَلِيۡمًا — Alee-maa — All-Knowing   (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him has full awareness, cognizance, information and knowledge. Various translations combine different words to state God’s finality, mastery and totality of having all info, perfect knowledge and being Cognizant, Mindful, Most Knowledgeable, Well-Acquainted, Well-Aware. A/t/a, ‘ever All-Knower of everything’ and ‘perfect knowledge’)
