وَلَٮِٕنۡ اَصَابَكُمۡ فَضۡلٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ لَيَـقُوۡلَنَّ كَاَنۡ لَّمۡ تَكُنۡۢ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَبَيۡنَهٗ مَوَدَّةٌ يّٰلَيۡتَنِىۡ كُنۡتُ مَعَهُمۡ  فَاَ فُوۡزَ فَوۡزًا عَظِيۡمًا‏

 

Wa-la-in-asaa-ba-koom-fudz-loom-may-nul-laa-hay                                                                  La-ya-qoo-lun-na                                                                                                                                    Ka-un-lum-ta-koon-bai-na-koom-wa-bai-na-hoo-ma-wud-da-toon                                        Ya-lai-ta-nee-koon-to-ma-aa-hoom                                                                                                    Fa-afoo-zo-fao-zun-azee-maa

 

And if a blessing from Allah reached you                                                                            He surely says regretfully                                                                                                          —  Like that there had never been a between you and him a love —                          “Would I had been with them                                                                                                  Then I too would have won a great triumph”  

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but ; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَ  — La — Certainly (=Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really surely; truly; verily. See Commentary titled as “2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect“)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever)
  • اَصَا بَ — Aa-saa-ba — Reached (= v., past., m., 3rd person. Affected; arrived; befallen; befell; came to; fell on; hit; landed on; overcame; overtook; reached; smut; struck; suffered by; touched; was delivered. A/t/a, ‘befell,’ ‘should come’ and ‘were successful.’ But ‘comes’ is a translation in the present tense of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. Generally this way the Holy Qor-aan addresses both men and women)
  • فَضۡلٌ — Fuz-loon — Blessing (= n., s, Abundant grace; benevolence; bounty; generosity; goodness; grace; grant; greatest gift; kindness; liberal bestowing; plenteousness. See 004:071. A/t/a ‘good fortune’ and ‘bounty (victory and booty)’
  • مِّنَ — May-na(ul) — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • لَ — La — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; indeed; surely. See  لَ  above)
  • يَـقُوۡلَنَّ — Ya-qoo-lun-na — Says regretfully (= v., pres, pl, m, 3rd person. Announces, broadcasts, calls, claims, conveys, declares, explains, elaborates, states, informs, tells or utters Enviably, grudgingly, jealously, regretfully, resentfully and spitefully. A/t/a, ‘he will … envy … saying,’ and ‘would be sure to say.’ Also, ‘they would say’ which is a  translation by N J Dawood in the plural of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the singular)
  • كَ — Ka — Like (= As if; identical; like; similar to the one stated in prior verse; resembling. A/t/a, ‘as if’ and ‘as though’)
  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= That)
  • لَمۡ — Lum — Never (= Absolutely no; not, not at all)
  • تَكُنۡۢ — Ta-koon — Had been (= v., pres., f., 3rd person. This word for the female gender  refers to  مَوَدَّةٌ  which is the 6th word ahead and means continuing from the past to the present and leading into the future)
  • بَيۡنَ — Bai-na — Between (= Ahead, facing or in front of; Among; betwixt)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. Generally this way the Holy Qor-aan addresses both men and women)
  • وَ  —  Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • بَيۡنَ — Bai-na — Between (= Ahead, facing or in front of; among; betwixt)
  • هٗ — Hoo — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person. A/t/a, ‘them’ is a translation by A Yusuf Ali in the plural of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the singular)
  • مَوَدَّةٌ — Ma-wud-da-toon — Love (= n., f. A mutual or two-way affectionate relationship. Affection; adoration; friendship; fondness; passion. A/t/a, ‘friendship,’ ‘amity’ and’ ‘ties of affection’)
  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!. A/t/a, ‘O’ and ‘Oh!’)
  • لَيۡتَ  — Lai-ta — Would (= Alas; wish; would.  The word expresses regret, remorse and sorrow. A/t/a, ‘Would that’)
  • نِى — Nee — I (= pro., s., 1st person. I; me.  A/t/a, ‘we’ which is a translation by N J Dawood in the plural of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the singular)
  • كُنۡتُ — Koon-to — I had been (= v., pres., 1st person. Continuing from the past to the         present and leading into the future)
  • مَعَ  — Ma-aa — Along with (= Along with; in the company of; going with or after)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid people)
  • فَ — Fa  — Then (= As a result; consequently; hence; so; therefore)
  • اَ فُوۡزَ — Afoo-za — I’d have won (= v., past., 1st person. I could, should or would have … accomplished, achieved, attained, made out, pulled off, reached, realized, succeeded, triumphed, won or been victorious. A/t/a, ‘made of it’)
  • فَوۡزًا — Fao-zun — Triumph (= n., Achievement; fine thing; success; triumph; victory. A/t/a, ‘success,’ ‘success (a good share of booty)’ and win)
  • عَظِيۡمًا –Azee-maa — Great (= Adj., Awesome; colossal; enormous; great; magnificent; mighty; rich; tremendous; valuable. A/t/a, ‘a fine thing’)
