ۨالَّذِيۡنَ يَتَّخِذُوۡنَ الۡـكٰفِرِيۡنَ اَوۡلِيَآءَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‌  ؕ اَيَبۡتَغُوۡنَ عِنۡدَهُمُ الۡعِزَّةَ فَاِنَّ الۡعِزَّةَ لِلّٰهِ جَمِيۡعًا  ؕ‏

 

(Ni)l-la-ze-na-yut-ta-khay-zoo-nul-kaa-fay-re-na                                                                      Auo-lay-yaa-aa-min-do-nil-moe-may-ne-na                                                                                   Aa-yub-ta-ghoo-na-in-da-ho-mool-iz-za-ta                                                                                    Fa-in-nul-iz-za-ta-lil-laa-hay-ja-me-aa

 

Those who take the disbelievers                                                                                            As friends from other than the Believers                                                                            Do they seek from them an honor?                                                                                      Then remember really all honor is for Allah

 

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those in masculine gender that include all articles, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • يَتَّخِذُوۡنَ — Yut-ta-khay-zoo-na — They take (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person., Adopt; catch; choose; hold down; own; seek; seize; set up; take)

— The phrase  الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ اَوۡلِيَآءَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‌ is repeated in 004:140 and 004:145 —

  • الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ — Kaa-fay-re-na — Disbelievers (= n., pl., Ungrateful. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘Unbelievers’)
  • أَوۡلِيَآءَ — Auo-lay-yaa-aa — Friends (= n., pl., Intimate, protective, sincere, real or true friends. Aides; guardians; helpers; minions; patrons; protectors; supporters; well-wishers.  Those who heed if a friend is in need. A/t/a, ‘Allies’ and ‘(protectors or helpers or friends)’
  • مِنۡ دُوۡنِ —  Min-do-n(il) — From other than (= Combination of two words. The first word مِنۡ (min) means among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kinds, things or person. The second word دُوۡنِ (do-nay) means besides, beyond, except, excluding or save. Jointly the two words mean apart from, exclusive of, other than, instead of or in preference to. A/t/a, ‘rather than’ and ‘to the exclusion of’)
  • الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ‌ —  Moe-may-ne-na — The believers (= n,. Adherents of Islam; those who enter the Faith, believe and follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Islaam and become Moslems. Men of faith. The faithful. See Commentary Believers and Disbelievers. A/t/a, ‘faithful’)
  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Question mark like  Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • يَبۡتَغُوۡنَ — Yub-ta-ghoo-na — They seek (= v., pres., pl., m., 3 rd person. Aspire; crave; covet; desire; go after; like; look for; pursue; seek; want; wish. A/t/a, ‘Are they seeking’
  • عِنۡدَ– In-da — From (= At; close at hand; from; in; in close proximity of; with. In the counting, esteem; estimate, eyes, front or near. Within the presence, precincts, seeing or sight of. A/t/a, ‘among,’ ‘at their hands’ and ‘with’)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo..(ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Those men. A/t/a, ‘their company’)
  • الۡعِزَّةَ — Iz-za-ta — Honor (= n., High esteem; honor; power; prestige; pride; respect. The word in different context can also mean arrogance, ego; view of own self, self-aggrandizement; vanity. A/t/a, ‘might,’ ‘power,’ ‘honour,’ ‘glory’ and ‘honour, power and glory’)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; in conclusion; so; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘Then let them remember that’)
  • اِنَّ — In-na … (ul) — Really (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, certainly;  decidedly; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; for sure; indeed; positively; really; seriously; sincerely; surely; truly; verily. A/t/a, ‘Nay’)
  • الۡعِزَّةَ —  Iz-za-ta — Honor (= n., High esteem; honor; prestige. See الۡعِزَّةَ above)
  • لِ — L…(il) — For (= Belongs to; for the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • جَمِيۡعًا — Ja-me-aa — All (= adv., Altogether; completely; entirely; totally; wholly. Also, accumulation, amassing, assembly or collection; every one; everything; in large numbers; in multitudes.  A/t/a, ‘appertaineth’ andall’)
