The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                004:023

 

وَلَا تَنۡكِحُوۡا مَا نَكَحَ اٰبَآؤُكُمۡ مِّنَ النِّسَآءِ اِلَّا مَا قَدۡ سَلَفَ‌ ؕ  اِنَّهٗ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَّمَقۡتًا ؕ  وَسَآءَ سَبِيۡلًا

 

Wa-laa-ton-kay-hoo-maa-na-ka-ha-aa-baa-o-koom                                                                    May-nun-nay-saa-aiy-il-laa-maa-qud-sa-la-fa                                                                              In-na-hoo-kaa-na-faa-hay-sha-ton-wa-muq-taa                                                                            Wa-saa-aa-sa-bee-laa

 

And you do not marry whom your fathers had married                                        From among the women except what has passed                                                            That certainly has been lewdness and repulsive                                                              And a bad practice

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/.a, ‘Henceforth you shall not’)
  • تَنكِحُوا — Tun-kay-hoo — You marry (= v., pres., pl., m., 2nd person. Establish matrimonial ties; wed; set up husband-wife relationship)
  • مَاۤ  — Maa — Whom (= All those; what; whatever; whatsoever; whomever)
  • نَكَحَ — Na-ka-ha — Had married (= v., past., pl., m., 3rd person. Established matrimonial ties; wed set up husband-wife relationship)
  • اٰبَآؤُ — Aa-baa-o — Forefathers (= n., pl., Elders; fathers; grandfathers h.h.s. The word also means parents and grandparents)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men)
  • مِنَ — May-na…(un) — From among (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • النِّسَآءِ — Nay-saa-aiy — The women (= Females of the mankind)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= That; whatever; whatsoever)
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis. Absolutely; categorically; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; specially; doubtlessly; obviously; for sure; in spite of; positively; specifically; verily; with no doubt whatsoever.   • سَلَفَ — Sa-la-fa — Has passed (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Already completed, done, gone,   happened or occurred. A/t/a, ‘hath already happened (of that nature) in the past,’ ‘has passed,’ ‘has already passed,’ ‘has already passed (before Islam)’ and ‘had already passed … (- you shall not be called to account for what you did in the past, only you have to divorce them now)’
  • اِنَّ — In-na — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed;      positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
  • هٗ — Hoo — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid practice of son’s marriage with his father’s wife)
  • كَانَ — Kaa-na — Has been     (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued to be; had been;  used to; were, went on)
  • فَاحِشَةً — Faa-hay-sha-ton — Lewd (= adj., Bad; foul; disgusting; immoral; improper, indecent, repulsive. Also, abomination; illegality; immorality; indecency; infraction; lewdness. Something inherently evil, obscene, shameful, sinful or unseemly act, conduct deed or practice. Open sexual perversion. Violation. Wickedness by doing in public view any of the above  outrages. A/t/a, ‘indecent,’ ‘highly indecent,’ ‘shameful’ and ‘ever lewdness’)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • مَقۡتًا — Muq-ton — Repulsive (= adj., Abhorrent; disgusting; foul; gross; hated; hideous; repellent; revolting; vile; worthy of being hated. A/t/a, ‘hateful,’ ‘most hateful,’ ‘odious,’ ‘abominable,’ ‘abomination’ and ‘repugnant’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  •  سَآءَ — Saa-aa — Bad (= adj., Appalling; awful; dire; dreadful; evil; ghastly; horrific; immoral; malevolent; shocking; terrible; vile; unpleasant; wicked; worst possible. A/t/a, ‘abominable’)
  • سَبِيۡلًا‏ — Sa-be-laa — Practice (= As the line, path, road, route; way. A/t/a, ‘custom’ and ‘practice’)
