The Holy Qor-aan 005:002
يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَوۡفُوۡا بِالۡعُقُوۡدِ ؕ اُحِلَّتۡ لَـكُمۡ بَهِيۡمَةُ الۡاَنۡعَامِ اِلَّا مَا يُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡكُمۡ غَيۡرَ مُحِلِّى الصَّيۡدِ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ حُرُمٌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَحۡكُمُ مَا يُرِيۡدُ
Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo Auo-foo-bil-o-qoo-day O-hil-lut-la-koom-ba-he-ma-tool-un-aa-may Il-laa-maa-yoot-laa-alai-koom Ghai-ra-mo-hil-liss-sai-day-wa-un-toom Ho-room In-nul-laa-ha-yah-ko-mo-maa-yo-reed
Listen, you all who have believed! Fulfil the pledges. Allowed for you are the four-legged cattle Except what is recited upon you (= you are told) — Other than the hunt brought down while you surely are Sanctified (in the pilgrim garb or sacred House). Of course, Allah decrees what He wills.
The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times
- يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
- اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha(ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
- ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
- اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. - اَوۡفُوۡا — Auo-foo — Fulfil (= v., pres., 2nd person. Complete. Fill. Fulfill. Give fully, totally and wholly. Honor. Keep faithful and truthful. Satisfy justly. A/t/a, ‘fulfill,’ ‘Abide by’ and ‘be true’’)
- بِ — Bay …(il) — With (= Literally the word بِ means with)
- الۡعُقُوۡدِ — O-qoo-day — Pledges (= n., pl., Promises; agreements; compacts; covenants; pledges. A/t/a, ‘obligations,’ ‘(your) obligations’ and ‘all (your) obligations’)
- اُحِلَّتۡ — O-hil-lut — Allowed (= v., past., pass., f., 3rd person. Approved; justified, legalized; permitted; sanctioned. Also announced, called out, declared, held, made or rendered Kosher, lawful, legal, legitimate or proper. A/t/a, ‘made lawful … (for food),’ ‘made lawful,’ ‘Lawful are made,’ ‘is lawful … to eat,’ ‘allowed,’ ‘lawful … (for food)’ and ‘lawful … (for food) are’)
- لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘unto’)
- كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. Generally this is the way the Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women)
- بَهِيۡمَةُ — Ba-he-ma-tool — Flesh (= n., Flesh, meat or muscle of four-footed animals. Soft (no-bones) part of the body of cattle. The word also refers to a person who is soft in head and is not hard-headed or bone-headed)
- الۡاَنۡعَامِ — Un-aa-may — Cattle (= n., pl., Class, kind, like or type of .. cattle such as buffalo, camel, cow, deer, horse, mule, etc. Domesticated edible four-legged animals. Quadruped. A/t/a, ‘four-footed animals,’ ‘beast of cattle,’ ‘beasts of cattle,’ ‘quadrupeds of the class of cattle,’ ‘(of the class) of cattle (and feeding on the plants)’ and ‘cattle-like animals’)
- اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; except; excluding; save; unless. A/t/a, ‘with the exception’ and ‘other than’)
- مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘those which’ and ‘that which’)
- يُتۡلٰى — Yoot-laa — Is recited (= v., pres., pass, s, 3rd person. Is recited, decreed, decided, directed, laid down, mandated, ordered, prescribed, read. revealed or told. A/t/a, ‘named,’ ‘hereby announced,’ ‘is announced,’ ‘are being announced,’ ‘will be announced … (herein),’ ‘may be expressly forbidden’ and ‘are enumerated … (as forbidden)’
- عَلَيۡ — Alai — Upon (= Above; against; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘unto … (herein)’)
- كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all. See كُمۡ above)
- غَيۡرَ– Ghai-ra — Not (= Besides; else; excluding; not; other than; out of; prohibiting; without. A/t/a, ‘But,’ ‘not,’ ‘except that,’ ‘provided that … not,’ ‘Yet’ and ‘should not’)
- مُحِلِّى — Mo-hil-liss — Brought down (= v., past., pass., 3rd person. Allowed, approved, made legal, permitted as shown above for اُحِلَّتۡ. But more meaningful is to say legally and properly brought down, downed, fallen, hunted down, landed, preyed upon and subdued. A/t/a, ‘of the chase,’ ‘being unlawful,’ ‘you should not hold … to be lawful,’ not ‘lawful for you,’ ‘violating the prohibition against,’ ‘forbidden (to kill),’ ‘make lawful’ and ‘forbidden’)
- الصَّيۡدِ — Sai-day — The hunt (= n., Game. Includes a kill by the predators trained to catch, hunt, prey or kill other animals as a hunt for the hunter. A/t/a, ‘hunting’ and ‘animals’)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; also; but [aya]; more over; though; when; while; yet. A/t/a, ‘while’ and ‘whilst’)
- اَنۡ — Un — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; verily)
- تُمۡ — Toom –You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You. See كُمۡ above. A/t/a, ‘ye Are’ and ‘you are’)
- حُرُمٌ — Ho-ro-moon — Sacred (= n., One who is dressed in a special way to perform Hujj or Om-rah. A/t/a, ‘in the Sacred Precincts Or in pilgrim garb,’ ‘on the pilgrimage,’ ‘on pilgrimage,’ ‘in a state of pilgrimage,’ ‘in the course of pilgrimage,’ ‘pilgrim sanctity,’ ‘in a pilgrim’s garb or the Sacred Precincts’ and ‘assume Ihram for Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimage)’ )
- اِنَّ — In-na…(ul) — Of course (= Absolutely; certainly; clearly, definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; for sure; indeed; positively; really; surely; truly; verily. A/t/a, ‘Lo!’)
- ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- يَحۡكُمُ — Yah-ko-mo — Decrees (= v., past., m., s., 3rd person. Adjudicates; decrees; lays down; mandates; ordains; orders; prescribes. A/t/a, ‘doth command,’ ‘ordaineth’ and ‘commands’)
- مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘According to,’ ‘what,’ and ‘that which’)
- يُرِيۡدُ — Yo-reed — He wills (= v., pres., s., m., 3rd person. With no possibility to fail in His designs and with all Power to finalize that He wills, the best translation is He wills. See Note 002:186. A/t/a, ‘He pleases,’ ‘intends’ and ‘He will.’ But saying ‘His Will and plan’ as a noun, or ‘which pleaseth’ as a verb in the passive voice, is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a verb in the active voice)
