The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                  005:059

 

 وَ اِذَا نَادَيۡتُمۡ اِلَى الصَّلٰوةِ اتَّخَذُوۡهَا هُزُوًا وَّلَعِبًا‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكَ بِاَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٌ لَّا يَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa-ezaa-naa-dai-toom-elus-sua-laa-tit                                                                                            Ta-kha-zoo-haa-ho-zo-wun-wa-la-aiy-baa                                                                                      Zaa-lay-ka-bay-un-na-hoom-qao-moon-laa-yau-qay-loo-n

 

And when you called for the prayer                                                                                    They took it as a joke or pastime.                                                                                            This is because they are the people who don’t act wisely

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but                           also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اِذَا — Ezaa — When (= At the time or event; call to mind; recall; remember; think of the time, event, occasion or opportunity. Also, behold; consider; ponder over; reflect)
  • نَادَيۡ  — Naa-dai — Called (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Announced; called; called out;  cried out; invited; urged; summoned by a call for prayer (Azan); prompted; urged. A/t/a, ‘proclaim by your call,’ ‘proclaim the call … [call for the prayer (Adhan)],’              ‘call to prayer,’ ‘call people,’ ‘call (the people) to Prayer’ and ‘call them to pray’ in the present tense is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
  • تُمۡ — Toom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You. all men. The Holy Qor-aan generally addresses men and women jointly. A/t/a, ‘ye’)
  • اِلَى — Ela … (us) — To (= For; in the direction of; to; towards)
  • الصَّلٰوةِ  — Sua-laa-t … (it) — The prayer (= The Commandment for the Moslems to pray Five times Daily. Abjectly and earnestly beseeching, requesting or supplicating in worshiping. Praying with full attention and focused mind. See our Commentaries ISLAM – 101 and Islam 104 – The 5 Acts of worships or pillars of Islam)
  • اتَّخَذُوۡا — Ut-ta-kha-zoo — They took (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Considered; construed; took. A/t/a, ‘make it,’ ‘take it’ and ‘treat’ but that in the present tense is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in the past tense. See Note 005:058)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person. It. A/t/a, ‘their prayers’)
  • هُزُوًا‌ — Ho-zo-waa — Joke (= adj., Funny humiliation; jest; joke; laughing matter; laughingstock; lightly; mockery. Hold or project someone in contempt or ridicule. Make a game of)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لَعِبًا — La-aiy-ba — Pastime (= adj., Mere play; pastime; sport. A trivial, useless or wasteful activity. A/t/a, ‘fun,’ ‘pastime,’ ‘worthless’ and ‘joke’)
  • ذٰ لِكَ —  Zaa-lay-ka — This is (= All that’s mentioned, stated or told. That shown here.  A/t/a, ‘That is,’ ‘This is,’ ‘They do so,’ ‘They do this’ and ’they are’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ means with. A/t/a, ‘because’)
  • اَ نَّ — Un-na — Surely (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really surely; truly; verily)
  • هُمۡ‌ —  Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; their)
  • قَوۡمٌ — Qao-moon — People (= n., s., Addressees; attendees; fellows; followers; folks; nation; party; people; tribe. A/t/a, ‘a folk,’ ‘a people’ and ‘they’)
  • لَّا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘lack’ and ‘are devoid of’)
  • يَعۡقِلُوۡنَ — Yau-qay-loon — Act wisely (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Act intelligently, sensibly and smartly; understand. See Note 002:171. A/t/a, ‘without understanding,’ ‘lack understanding,’ ‘devoid of understanding’ and ‘who have … understanding’ but this format is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in a verb)
