The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                               005:067

 

 وَلَوۡ اَنَّهُمۡ اَقَامُوا التَّوۡرٰٮةَ وَالۡاِنۡجِيۡلَ وَمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡهِمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهِمۡ لَاَ كَلُوۡا مِنۡ فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَمِنۡ تَحۡتِ اَرۡجُلِهِمۡ‌ ؕ مِنۡهُمۡ اُمَّةٌ مُّقۡتَصِدَةٌ‌  ؕ وَكَثِيۡرٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa-lao-un-hoom-aqaa-moot-tao-raa-ta-wul-in-jee-la                                                                Wa-maa-oon-zay-la-min-rub-bay-him-la-aa-ka-loo                                                                Min-fao-qay-him-wa-min-tah-tay-ur-jo-lay-him                                                                        Min-hoom-oom-ma-toon-mooq-say-da-toon                                                                                    Wa-ka-thee-roon-min-hoom-saa-aa-maa-yau-ma-loo-n

 

And if they had enforced the Torah and the Bible                                                            And that entrusted to them from their Lord they certainly would eat                    From above them and from under their feet.                                                            From among them is a nation who are moderate.                                                        And evil is that a lot of them practice.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — If (= In case; under the circumstances; wish; would. A/t/a, ‘If only’ and ‘had’)
  • اَ نَّ — Un-na — Surely (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really surely; truly; verily)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • اَقَامُوا — Aqaa-moo … (t) — Enforced (= v., past. pl.,3rd person. Abided by; affirmed; continued to act upon; established; observed; remained within the confines provided. A/t/a, ‘stood fast,’ ‘Had they carried out the commandment,’ ‘had acted according to’  and ‘If they observe’)
  • التَّوۡرٰٮةَ — Tao-raa-ta — The Torah (= n., The divine revelations to the Prophet Moses, p.o.h.  The scripture revered by Jews. A/t/a, ‘the Torah,’ ‘the Law’ and ‘Taurat (Torah)’
  • وَ  — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • الۡاِنۡجِيۡلَ — In-jee-la — The Bible (= n., The divine revelations to the Prophet Jesus, p.o.h. The scripture revered by the Christians.  A/t/a, ‘Gospel,’ ‘Injil’ (Gospel)’ and ‘Injeel’)
  • وَ — Wa  — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when. A/t/a, ‘that which’ and what)
  • اُنۡزِلَ — Oon-za-la — Entrusted (= v., past., pass., s, 3rd person. Dispatched, given, granted inspired; revealed. Handed, laid, lowered, or sent down. Also, delivered; landed upon; provided; released; supplied. See Note 002:005a. Given; granted; sent  down. A/t/a, ‘sent,’ ‘is revealed,’ ‘was revealed,’ ‘sent down,’ ‘now sent down,’ ‘(now) been sent down … (the Qur’an)’ and ‘revealed to them (now)’                                                
  • اِلَيۡ — Elai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards)
  • هِمۡ — Him –Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; their)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • هِمۡ —  Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; truly; surely; verily)
  • اَ كَلُوۡا — Aa-ka-loo — Would eat (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Consumed; partaken. A/t/a,  ‘enjoyed,’ ‘they would … have been nourished,’ ‘they … would have partaken,’ ‘would have eaten of good things,’ ‘would … have eaten (of good things),’ ‘would have eaten,’ ‘would … have gotten provision’ and ‘they shall be given abundance’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of. See  مِّنۡ   above)
  • فَوۡقِ — Fao-qay — Above (= On next degree above, beyond, over, greater, higher, larger more or superior. Also, on next degree below, inferior, lower, lesser, smaller or under. A/t/a, ‘above’ and ‘spiritual … bounties’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘as well as’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of. See  مِّنۡ  above)
  • تَحۡتِ — Tah-tay — Under (= Below; beneath; on lower level; underneath. A/t/a, ‘under’)
  • اَرۡجُلِ — Ur-jo-lay — Feet (= n., pl. Lower extremity of legs that directly touch the ground. The terminal parts of legs below ankles. A/t/a, ‘material bounties’ and ‘feet, (thus would have enjoyed the boons of the heaven and the earth’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. One author translated this and the seven earlier words as ‘from every side’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From among (= Among, from or out of. See مِّنۡ  above. A/t/a, ‘of,’ ‘among,’ ‘Though here is amongst’ and ‘Some of them’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • اُمَّةٌ — Oom-ma-toon — Nation (= n., Group of people. A/t/a, ‘nation,’ ‘a party of,’ ‘a section,’ ‘people,’ ‘a people’ and ‘a community’)
  • مُّقۡتَصِدَةٌ‌ — Mooq-sa-da-toon — Who are moderate (= n., Who adopt, follow and pursue the middle of whatever course, path or road that lies ahead of them. A/t/a, ‘on the right course,’ ‘on the right course (i.e. they act on the Revelation and believe in Prophet  Muhammad s.a.w. as Abdullah bin Salam r.u),’ ‘keeping to the moderate course,’ ‘who are moderate,’ ‘which is moderate,’ ‘who is moderate (and of balanced mind),’ ‘a frugal’ and ‘righteous men’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • كَثِيۡرٌ — Ka-thee-roon — A lot (= Adj., Abundant. Ample. Bigger, greater or larger in number. Good deal. Great favor. Much more. Of exceeding quality and quantity. Of several times higher height. Plump. Plentiful. Without cease. Without stint. Any multitude, overflowing or repetition of goodness A/t/a, ‘many of them,’most of them’ and ‘a large number of’)                                                           
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See مِّنۡ  above. )
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. A/t/a, ‘them are such that’)
  • سَآءَ — Saa-aa — Evil (= adj., Appalling; awful; bad; dire; dreadful; ghastly; horrific; immoral; malevolent; shocking; terrible; unpleasant; vile; wicked; worst possible. A/t/a, ‘evil’ and ‘evil indeed’)
  • مَاۤ  — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when. A/t/a, ‘of,’  ‘that which’ and ‘what’)
  • يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ — Yau-ma-loo-n — They practice (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Act; do; execute; exercise; function; implement; operate; perform; practice; work. A/t/a, ‘they do,’ ‘Follow a course that is,’ ‘evil are their deeds,’ ‘do … deeds’ and ‘do nothing but evil.’ But ‘conduct’ as a noun is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has states as a verb)
