قُلۡ يٰۤـاَهۡلَ الۡـكِتٰبِ لَا تَغۡلُوۡا فِىۡ دِيۡـنِكُمۡ غَيۡرَ الۡحَـقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوۡۤا اَهۡوَآءَ قَوۡمٍ قَدۡ ضَلُّوۡا مِنۡ قَبۡلُ وَاَضَلُّوۡا كَثِيۡرًا وَّضَلُّوۡا عَنۡ سَوَآءِ السَّبِيۡلِ

 

Qool-yaa-aah-lul-kay-taa-bay-laa-tugh-lao-fee                                                                            Dee-nay-koom-ghai-rul-huq-qay                                                                                                        Wa-laa-tut-ta-bay-oo-ah-waa-aa-qao-min                                                                                      Qud-dzul-loo-min-qub-lo                                                                                                                    Wa-aa-dzul-loo-ka-thee-run                                                                                                                Wa-dzul-loo-un-sa-waa-iss-sa-bee-l

 

Say, “Listen, people of the Book! Do not cross the line                                                  In your religion without the truth.                                                                                        And do not follow the mouths of people.                                                                        Surely they went astray in the past                                                                                   And they sent astray many.                                                                                                  And went astray from the right road.”

  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Ul-kay-taa-bay — The Book (= n., The Divine Directive of Commands, Prohibitions and Regulations. Holy Scripture. See 002:003. A/t/a, ‘people … (Jews and Christians’)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • تَغۡلُوۡا — Tugh-lao — Cross the line (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act or behave dishonestly or illegally. Add to or subtract from. Breach trust. Cheat. Cross the line. Deceive. Exaggerate. Exceed limit. Falsify. Can also mean misappropriate, steal or rob. A/t/a, ‘exaggerate,’ ‘exceed … trespassing,’ ‘exceed … the limits,’ ‘stress’ and ‘transgress the bounds of truth’)
  • فِىۡ  — Fee — In (= Amidst. Among. Contained or inside a duration, event, place, period, person, phenomenon, situation, thing or time. Also, about; concerning; in reference, regarding, relative to. See Note at 002:028. May also be belonging to a kind or category, rank or person, thing or situation. A/t/a, ‘in,’ ‘in the matter of’))
  • دِيۡـنِ  — Dee-nay — Religion (= n., Faith; religion; lifestyle)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan generally addresses men and women jointly this way)
  • غَيۡرَ — Ghai-ra … (ul) — Without (= Absent; besides; else; excluding; not; other than; out of; prohibiting; without. A/t/a, ‘other than,’ ‘(by believing in something) other than’ and ‘beyond’)
  • الۡحَـقِّ — Ul-huq-qay — The Truth (= Appropriate; equitable; exactness; fair; fairness; just; just cause; justification; justice; justified conduct; preciseness; proper; reasonableness; suitable. Right. The word is also used to mean Islam, the Right Faith. A/t/a, ‘the truth,’ ‘The bounds (of what is proper) … truth,’ ‘unjustly’ and ‘falsely and unjustly’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but;                          also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَا — Laa — No (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See  لَا  above)
  • تَتَّبِعُوۡۤا — Tut-ta-bay-oo — Follow (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Copy; duplicate; emulate;  imitate. A/t/a, ‘follow’ and ‘yield’)   
  • اَهۡوَآءَ — Ah-waa-aa — Mouths (= n., pl., Words spoken from mouths. Loudmouth talks, and utterances. Words nakedly inferable or quite visible in malicious conduct, obvious hostilities and manners  manifested by behavior and work. Also. evil desires, wants, whims, wishes and wills. A/t/a, ‘desires,’ ‘vain desires,’ ‘low desires,’ ‘evil inclinations’ and ‘fancies’)
  • قَوۡمٍ — Qao-min — People (= n., s., Addressees; attendees; fellows; followers; folk; nation; party; people; tribe. A/t/a, ‘of people,’ ‘of a people’ and ‘of those who’)   
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis such as very definitely; surely. See Note 004:049)
  • ضَلُّوۡا — Dzul-loo — They went astray (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Blundered; misguided; mistaken; strayed; turned in wrong direction or road. A/t/a, ‘went wrong,’ ‘erred,’ ‘have … erred,’ ‘themselves went astray,’ ‘went astray,’ ‘had gone astray’ and ‘had themselves gone astray’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • قَبۡلُ — Qub-lo — Before (= Best translation is ‘in the past’ while literal meanings are also provide. Earlier, former, older, past or prior times. Aforetime. Ahead. Something that happened or occurred in prior periods antecedently, historically and previously. A/t/a, ‘before,’ ‘before you,’ ‘in times gone by’ and ‘already’)
  • وَ  —  Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اَضَلُّوۡا — Aa-dzul-loo — They sent astray (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Caused others to go astray and lose their way, proper path or right road; misguided; misled. A/t/a, ‘led … astray,’ ‘led astray,’ ‘caused … to go astray,’ ‘caused go stray,’ caused … others to go astray’ and ‘who have led … astray’)

  • سَوَآءٍ — Sa-waa-i(ss) — Right (= adj., Balanced and equal in fairness, justice and equity.  Common, complete and competent. Designed and fashioned for equality. Equal. Flawless. Harmonious. In balanced good proportions. Perfectly reasonable. Similar. Suitably settled. True. Well-proportioned. A/t/a, proper; right, righteous; true; even;  ‘plain’)
  • السَّبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-l — Road (= n., Cause; course; highway; lines; passage; path; road; route; way)
