تَرٰى كَثِيۡرًا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتَوَلَّوۡنَ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا‌ؕ لَبِئۡسَ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ لَهُمۡ اَنۡفُسُهُمۡ اَنۡ سَخِطَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَفِى الۡعَذَابِ هُمۡ خٰلِدُوۡنَ

 

Ta-raa-ka-thee-run-min-hoom-ya-ta-wul-lao-nul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo                                    La-bae-sa-maa-qud-da-mut-la-hoom-un-fo-so-hoom                                                                    Un-sa-khay-tul-laa-ho-alai-him                                                                                                          Wa-fil-azaa-bay-hoom-khaa-lay-doo-n

 

You see many among them turn to those who have disbelieved.                              Evil certainly is that their souls forwarded for themselves                                  Since Allah became angry with them.                                                                              And in punishment they are dwellers.

           

  • تَرٰى  — Ta-ra — You see (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Look; observe; ponder; view;  watch; witness. See Note 002:244a. A/t/a, ‘you see,’ ‘Thou seest,’ ‘Thou shalt see’ and ‘you will find’)
  • كَثِيرً۬ا — Ka-thee-raun — Many (= adj., A lot; abundant. Ample. Great deal. Many.               Plentiful. Without cease. Without stint)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — Among (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon. A/t/a, ‘of’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • يَتَوَلَّوۡنَ — Ya-ta-wul-lao(na) — Turn (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Befriend. Also chose as friend, guardian, guide; helper; patron, protector, supporter or well-wisher who heeds in need. A/t/a, ‘befriending,’ ‘making friends,’ ‘turning in friendship,’  ’taking … as their helpers,’ ‘allying (themselves),’ ‘taking … as their Auliya (protectors and helpers)’ and ‘making alliance’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons, or phenomenon or things in masculine gender) 
  • كَفَرُوۡا — Ka-fa-roo — They disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islam and become Moslem. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘the Unbelievers,’ ‘the disbelievers,’ ‘the idolaters’ and ‘who disbelieve’ but those nouns are no translation of the verb that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; surely; verily)
  • بِئۡسَ — Bae-sa Bad (= adj., Appalling; awful; dire; depraved; dreadful; evil; ghastly; horrific; sad; shocking; unacceptable. Also, undesirable; unlucky; unfortunate; unpleasant; vile; worst; worst possible; wretched. A/t/a, ‘evil,’ ‘evil was the way’ and ‘ill’)
  • مَاۤ  — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘which,’ ‘that which’ and ‘to which’)
  • قَدَّمَتۡ — Qud-da-mut — Forwarded (= v., past., s., f/g., 3rd person. Dispatched; sent ahead. A/t/a, ‘have forwarded,’ ‘have sent forward Before,’ ‘they themselves have sent on before,’ ‘their ownselves have sent forward before,’ ‘chosen to sent on ahead,’ ‘sent on before’ and ‘sent forward.’ But ‘send on,’ ‘send before’ and prompt them’ in the present tense is no translation of the Holy Qor-aan that has stated the act in the past tense)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for;   on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; their)
  • اَنۡفُسُ — Un-fo-so — Selves (= n., pl. Persons; selves; souls. A/t/a, ‘themselves’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • اَنۡ — Un — Since (= As; for the reason that. A/t/a, ‘(with the result) that,’ with the result that,’ ‘which is that,’ ‘so that,’ ‘(to the effect) that’ and ‘for (that) reason’)
  • سَخِطَ — Sa-khay-ta… (ul) — Became Angry (= v., past., s, 3rd person. Became angry, displeased or unhappy. Turned annoyed. See Note 005:081 below)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘upon’ and ‘with’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • فِى — F… (il) — In (= About. concerning; reference, regarding, relative to; in the matter of. Also, in a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation. See Note 002:028)
  • الۡعَذَابِ — Azaa-bay — Punishment (= Appropriate, due and fair agony, chastisement,  doom, hard task, penalty, recompense, torment, torture or scourge. A/t/a, ‘this punishment’ and ‘this torment’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • خٰلِدُوۡنَ — Khaa-lay-doo-n — Dwellers (= n., pl. Those who live a long but limited time. See Note 002:040. A/t/a, ‘they abide,’ ‘they will abide,’ ‘they shall abide,’ ‘will they abide,’ ‘shall they abide,’ ‘they shall dwell forever’ and ‘shall endure eternal’ but neither that verb nor the concept of forever and eternal is a translation of the noun that the Holy Qor-aan has used)

** Note 005:081. The true meanings of the words  اَنۡ سَخِطَ اللّٰهُ  in the Holy Qor-aan are not given by some authors as shown below.

  1. The past tense in the text was translated in the present tense as ‘is displeased’ by A Yusuf Ali as ‘wrath is’ and by M Muhamad Ali, M Sher Ali, M Zafrulla Khan, M Ghulam Farid and A Rahman Omar.
  2. The past tense in the text was translated in the future tense as ‘will be wroth’ by Memaduke Pickthall
  3. The active voice in the text was translated in the passive voice as ‘wrath fell upon them’ by M Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali.
  4. The text shows Allah as the subject as the One Who became angry. But people were made the subject in stating as ‘they have incurred the wrath’ by Dr Ahmad Zaidan and N J Dawood
