The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                  005:097

 

 اُحِلَّ لَـكُمۡ صَيۡدُ الۡبَحۡرِ وَطَعَامُهٗ مَتَاعًا لَّـكُمۡ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ‌ ۚ وَحُرِّمَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ صَيۡدُ الۡبَـرِّ مَا دُمۡتُمۡ حُرُمًا‌ ؕ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ الَّذِىۡۤ اِلَيۡهِ تُحۡشَرُوۡنَ

 

O-hil-la  la  koom  sai-do  ol-bauh-ray  wa-ta-aa-mo  hoo                                                            Ma-taa-un  la  koom  wa  lis-suy-yaa-ra-tay                                                                                    Wa-hoor-ray-ma  alai  koom  sai-dol  bur-ray                                                                              Maa  doom  toom  ho-ro-mun                                                                                                            Wa  ut-ta-qool  laa-ha  ul-la-ze  elai  hay  toh-sha-roo-n

 

Allowed for you is the hunts of the sea and its food                                                        As a provision for you and the travelers.                                                                            And prohibited on you is the hunt of land                                                                        While your holy state to perform Hujj or Omrah lasts.                                                And you should love Allah to Whom you’ll be brought.

 

  • اُحِلَّ — O-hil-la — Allowed (= v., pass., past., 3rd person. Accepted; allowed; approved;  authorized; legalized; licensed; permitted. Declared appropriate, kosher or proper. Made lawful. A/t/a, ‘made lawful,’ ‘made lawful … (even when you are in a Pilgrim’s garb to hunt’ and ‘permitted to you.’ But ‘lawful’ as a noun is no translation of the Holy Qor-aan that has set the Command with a verb)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended or meant for; concerning; regarding; relative to; to)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. The Holy Qor-aan has addressed men and women jointly this way)
  • صَيۡدُ — Sai-do … (ol) — The hunt (= n., Game. Includes a kill by the predators trained to  catch, hunt, prey or kill other animals as a hunt for the hunter. A/t/a, Catch fish, ‘pursuit,’ ‘(the pursuit) of,’ ‘game’ and ‘catch.’ But ‘to hunt’ in the form of a verb is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a noun and as many authors have done)
  • الۡبَحۡرِ — Bauh-ray — Ocean (= n., s., Big body of water; big lakes like the Sea of Aral;  lakes; ocean; rivers; seas; stream; shallow beach subject to huge rise and fall of ocean-water with every waxing and waning. A/t/a, ‘water-game,’ ‘the sea,’ ‘in the sea,’ ‘fish  of the sea’ and ‘of the sea (and water)’
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • طَعَامُ — Ta-aa-mo — Food (= n., Eating or feeding any food or eatable for subsistence.  A/t/a, ‘eating,’ ‘to eat,’ ‘eat its fish,’ ‘eat … food,’ ‘use For food’ and ‘the food’)
  • هٗ — Hoo — Its (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid hunt.  A/t/a, ‘thereof’)
  • مَّتَاعًا — Ma-taa-un — As a provision (= adv., Benefit; convenience; enjoyment; food; special break; sustenance. A/t/a, ‘for the benefit’ and ‘good food’)
  • لَّ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose. See  لَ  above)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لِلۡ — L … (is) — For / to (= Concerning, regarding; relative to. See  لَ  above)
  • سَّيَّارَةِ‌ — Suy-yaa-ra-tay — Travelers (= n., Caravan; group of people travelling together. A/t/a, ‘those who travel,’ ‘travellers,’ ‘seafarers,’ ‘travellers (who can make it a provision for their way)’ and ‘seafarer’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • حُرِّمَ — Hoor-ray-ma — Was prohibited (= v., pass., past., 3rd person. Banned; barred; disallowed; disapproved; excluded; forbidden; interdicted; made illegal; outlawed; not authorized or permitted; proscribed; stopped. A/t/a, ‘unlawful’ but that noun is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has set down as a Command by a verb)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • صَيۡدُ — Sai-do … (ol) — The hunt (= n., Game and what trained predators kill. See صَيۡدُ above)
  • الۡبَـرِّ —  Bur-ray — Land (= n. Ground. A/t/a, ‘land-game,’ ‘of the land,’ ‘on land’ and ‘in the land’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — While (= What; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when)
  • دُمۡ — Doom — Lasts (= v., pres. 2nd person. Continue. A/t/a, ‘as long as’ and ‘whilst’)
  • تُمُ — Toom — Your (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • حُرُمًا‌ — Ho-ro-mun — The holy state (= adv., Clothed or dressed as a forbidden, holy, protected or sacred person set to perform the Holy rituals of Hujj or Omrah. A/t/a, ‘in a state of Ihram (for Hajj or ‘Umrah),’ ‘In the Sacred Precincts Or in the pilgrim garb,’ ‘in the Pilgrim’s garb or in the Sacred Precincts,’ ‘in a state of Pilgrimage,’ ‘in the course of Pilgrimage,’ ‘on the pilgrimage’ and ‘on Pilgrimage’)

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha … in many contexts

  • وَ — Wa … (ut) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses.  See وَ   above)
  • اتَّقُوا — Ta-qoo … (la) — You love (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act piously and avoid angering Allah by being deeply in love with Him; be afraid, pious or righteous. See our Commentary titled as The Righteous. Also, fear Allah much; take as the shield. A/t/a, ‘fear,’ ‘keep your duty to,’ ‘be mindful of your duty’ and ‘have fear’)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • الَّذِىۡ — La-zee — He who (= s., m., 3rd person article, thing or person; he; who)
  • اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘to,’ ‘unto’ and ‘before’)
  • هِ — Hay  — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person. ‘Whom’)
  • تُحۡشَرُوۡنَ — Toh-sha-roo-n — You’ll be brought (= v., pres., pass., pl., 2nd person., You will be brought to  appear for an audience or have a hearing. Collected as if for an inspection. Rounded up for presentment. Also, assembled; banded; driven; gathered. A/t/a, ‘Whom Ye shall be gathered back,’ ‘you shall be gathered back,’ ‘ye will be gathered,’ ‘you will be gathered,’ ‘you shall be gathered’ and ‘you shall be assembled’)
