اَلَمۡ يَرَوۡا كَمۡ اَهۡلَـكۡنَا مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡ مِّنۡ قَرۡنٍ مَّكَّنّٰهُمۡ فِى الۡاَرۡضِ مَا لَمۡ نُمَكِّنۡ لَّـكُمۡ وَاَرۡسَلۡنَا السَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ مِّدۡرَارًا وَّجَعَلۡنَا الۡاَنۡهٰرَ تَجۡرِىۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهِمۡ فَاَهۡلَكۡنٰهُمۡ بِذُنُوۡبِهِمۡ وَاَنۡشَاۡنَا مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا اٰخَرِيۡنَ ‏

 

Aa-lum-ya-rao-cum-ah-luk-naa-min-qub-lay-him                                                                        Min-qur-nim-muk-kun-naa-hoom-fil-ur-dzay                                                                          Maa-lum-no-muk-kil-la-koom                                                                                                              Wa-ur-sul-nus-smaa-aa-alai-him-mid-raa-run                                                                              Wa-ja-ul-nul-un-haa-ra-tuj-re-min-tah-tay-him                                                                            Fa-ah-luk-naa-hoom-bay-zo-noo-bay-him                                                                                      Wa-un-shau-naa-min-bau-day-him-qur-nun-aa-kha-ree-n

 

Do they not see how many we destroyed before them                                                    Nations We had established them in the world                                                                 That We have not established you                                                                                    And We sent upon them the rain in sheets                                                                      And We made the rivers flowing underneath them.                                                    Even then we destroyed them due to their sins                                                             And we raised after them other nations.

 

  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Question mark like Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will? A/t/a, ‘See they,’ ‘Have these people’ and ‘Have they’)
  • لَمۡ — Lum — Not (= Absolutely never; no; not)
  • يُرَوۡا — Yo-rao — See (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Come across; face; observe; are shown; take notice; watch. A/t/a, ‘See they,’ ‘Know they’ and ‘Can they see.’ But having stated ‘considered,’ ‘seen’ and ‘have they … seen’ in the past tense is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan stated in the present tense)
  • كَمۡ — Cum — How many (= The number of events, occasions, people or times)
  • اَهۡلَـكۡ — Ah-luk — Destroyed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Annihilated; caused the downfall; killed; ruined; wasted. A/t/a, ‘destroyed,’ ‘have destroyed’ and ‘did destroy’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., m/f., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • قَبۡلِ — Qub-lay — Before (= Earlier, former, older, past or prior times. Aforetime. Ahead. Something that happened previously or occurred historically in an earlier period)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See  مِنۡ  above)
  • قَرۡنٍ — Qur-n … (im) — Nations (= n., pl., Dynasties; empires; generations. groups. A/t/a, ‘men’ and ‘generations.’ See Note below why translating as ‘a generation’ is inaccurate)
  • مَّكَّنّٰ — Muk-kaun — Had established (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Dug deep; firmed up; set up. A/t/a, ‘had established,’ ‘had established … more firmly,’ ‘had made more powerful’ and ’had given them so firm a hold and power’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our. See  نَآ  above)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • فِى — F… (il) — In (= About. concerning; reference, regarding, relative to; in the matter of. Also, in a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation. See Note 002:028)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Ul-ur-dzay — Earth (= n., s., Area; country; ground; land; territory. Also, life on earth, nation; people or society)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= All that; whatever; whatsoever. A/t/a, ‘as’ and ‘such as’)
  • لَمۡ — Lum — Not (= Absolutely never; no; not at all)
  • نُمَكِّنۡ — No-muk-kin — We establish (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Dig deep, firm up; set up. See  مَّكَّنّٰ  above. A/t/a, ‘established,’ ‘We had made this generation,’ ‘strength such as We have … given’ and ‘such a firm hold.’ This and the next nine words were translated as ‘men whom We had made more powerful in the land than you’)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اَرۡسَلۡ — Ur-sul — Sent (= v., past., 1st person. Appointed; dispatched; deputed;  empowered with the authority; raised; set up. A/t/a, ‘shed on,’ ‘sent down,’ ‘had sent,’ ‘poured out’ and ‘sending down’)
  • نَآ — Naa .. (us) — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our. See  نَآ  above)
  • السَّمَآءَ — Sa-maa-aa — The Rain (= n., s., Clouds. Firmament. Rain. Sky; All above earth. A/t/a, ‘rains,’ ‘rain from the skies,’ ‘rain from the sky,’ ‘from the sky’ and ‘from clouds’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a, ‘whom’)
  • مِّدۡرَارًا — Mid-raa-run — In sheets (= n., Abundance. Huge quantities. A/t/a, ‘in abundance,’ ‘abundant showers,’ ‘abundant,’ ‘pouring abundant rain,’ ‘pouring down abundant rain’ and ‘abundant water’)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • جَعَلۡ — Ja-ul — Made (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Caused; made. A/t/a, ‘gave,’ [aya], ‘caused’ and ‘giving them’)
  • نَآ  — Naa — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our. See  نَآ  above)
  • الۡاَنۡهٰرَ –Un-haa-ra — Rivers (= n., pl. Big and wide canals. Rivers. Streams. A/t/a, ‘(fertile) streams’)
  • تَجۡرِىۡ — Tuj-ree — Flowing (= v., pres., s., f., 3rd person. Irrigating; running water;  sailing with water. A/t/a, ‘flow,’ ‘to flow’ and with the next three words as ‘that rolled at their feet’)
  • مِنۡ  — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See  مِنۡ  above)
  • تَحۡتِ — Tah-tay — Beneath (= Below; in; underneath; sub-soil; through; underground.  See Note 002:026a. A/t/a, ‘under’ and ‘subject to their command and control’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a, ‘their (feet)’ and referred to as ‘whose water they regulated’)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; so; thereafter; therefore; thus. A/t/a, ‘yet’ )
  • اَهۡلَـكۡ — Ah-luk — Destroyed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Annihilated. See اَهۡلَـكۡ above)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our. See  نَآ  above)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. Because of. Due to. On account of. A/t/a, ‘for,’ ‘because of,’ ‘owing to’ and ‘for’ )
  • ذُنُوۡبِ — Zo-noo-bay —  Sins (= n., pl of s., ذُنب ; Bad and culpable acts; inappropriate conduct; crimes; errors; faults; illegal acts; misdeeds; intended offences; wrongs. A/t/a, ‘sins.’ But ‘they sinned’ as a verb is no translation which is stated as a noun in the Holy Qor-aan)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally)
  • اَنۡشَاۡ — Un-shau — Raised (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Appointed. Raised. Set                     up. A/t/a, ‘raised up,’ ‘created’ and ‘made’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our. See  نَآ  above)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See  مِنۡ  above)
  • بَعۡدِ — Bau-day — After (= Behind; later; subsequent to; succeeding. A/t/a, ‘in wake’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • قَرۡنًا — Qur-nun — Nations (= n., pl., Dynasties; empires; groups. See  قَرۡنٍ  above)
  • اٰخَرِيۡنَ — Aa-kha-ree-n — Other (= adj., Those who come later. A/t/a, ‘Fresh generations (To succeed),’ ‘other’ and ‘another’)

** Note 006:007: The plural pronoun  هُمۡ‌ (hoom) comes after the word قَرۡنٍ (qurnin). That is why it is imperative to translate the noun  قَرۡن  in the plural as a class, and not in the singular as one – even though the vowel Tunween (double kusra under and double fatah above) normally indicates that the noun is singular.
