وَقَالُواْ لَوۡلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيۡهِ مَلَكٌ۬ ‌ۖ وَلَوۡ أَنزَلۡنَا مَلَكً۬ا لَّقُضِىَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ ثُمَّ لَا يُنظَرُونَ

 

Wa  qaa-loo  lao  laa  oon-zay-la  alai  hay  ma-la-koon                                                                Wa  lao-un-zul  naa  ma-la-kun  la  qo-dzay-ya  ul-um-ro                                                            Thoom-ma  laa  yoon-za-roo-n

 

And they said, “Why was not an angel sent to him?”                                                    And if we had sent an angel the  order would be executed.                                Then they won’t get reprieved.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • قَالُواْ — Qaa-loo — Said (= v., past, s, m, 3rd person. All those men announced; called; declared; told. See 002:031. A/t/a, ‘they said.’ But ‘They say’ and ‘They ask’ in the present tense is inaccurate translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the present tense)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — Why (= Wish; would. A/t/a, ‘Why has,’ ‘Why hath’ and ‘(If the Prophet is true and sincere in his claim)’
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • أُنزِلَ — Oon-zay-la — Was sent (= v., past., pass., 3rd person. Dispatched; entrusted; given; granted; inspired; revealed; handed; laid; landed; sent down; set up. See Note 002:005a)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — To (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to.  A/t/a,      ‘unto’ and ‘to (help) him’)
  • هِ — Hay — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person)
  • مَلَكٌ۬ — Ma-la-koon — An angel (= n., s., An immortal being attendant upon God who  execute His commands and do no wrong. Also, a kind, loving and lovable person. See Note 006:009 below)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases, etc. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘But’ and ‘yet’)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — If (= In case; under the circumstances; wish; would. A/t/a, ‘Had’)
  • أَنزَلۡ — Un-zul — Sent (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Dispatched. Entrusted. Gave.                    Revealed. Sent down. See أُنزِلَ above)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., m/g., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • مَلَكً۬ا  — Ma-la-kun — Angel (= n., s., An angel. See  مَلَكٌ۬  above)
  • لَ  — La  — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • قُضِىَ — Qo-zay-ya … (ul) — Decided (= v., past., pass., s., 3rd person. Completed; ended; finished; passed; settled. A/t/a, ‘Would be settled at once,’ ‘would have been settled at once,’ ‘would have been settled,’ ‘would have been sealed,’ ‘would have been decided,’ ‘would be decided,’ ‘would be judged’ and ‘would have been judged at once’)   
  • الۡاَمۡرِ — Um-ray — The Order (= n., s.,1. Authority; command; control; decision; decree;   direction; instruction; judgment; responsibility; rule. 2. Affair; issue; matter; situation. See Note 002:211. A/t/a, ‘the matter,’ ‘their doom’ and their fate’)
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; further more; subsequently; thereafter. A/t/a, ‘and’)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See  لَا  above)
  • يُنظَرُونَ — Yoon-za-roo-n — Get reprieved (= v., pres., pass., pl., 3rd person. Allowed another chance. Given or granted consideration, kindness, opportunity or gracious reflection. Granted respite. Shown mercy.. A/t/a, ‘respite would be granted to them,’ ‘they would … respited,’ ‘they would … have been respited,’ ‘they would … have been granted respite,’ ‘respite would be given to them,’ ‘further time would be allowed (for reflection)’ and ‘they would have never been reprieved’)

 

** Note 006:009: The Qamoos Alfaz by Abdullah Abbasi Nadvi shows the meanings of two different words although to a foreign eye they look very similar. One used in this verse is  مَلَكٌ۬  (with the vowel Fatha above Laam which is the second letter of the word) and means an angel. The other looking very similar is  ملِك  (with the vowel Kasra below Laam which is the second letter of the word) and means a king.
