The Holy Qor-aan 006:026
وَمِنۡهُمۡ مَّنۡ يَّسۡتَمِعُ اِلَيۡكَ ۚ وَجَعَلۡنَا عَلٰى قُلُوۡبِهِمۡ اَكِنَّةً اَنۡ يَّفۡقَهُوۡهُ وَفِىۡۤ اٰذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرًا ؕ وَاِنۡ يَّرَوۡا كُلَّ اٰيَةٍ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُوۡا بِهَا ؕ حَتّٰۤى اِذَا جَآءُوۡكَ يُجَادِلُوۡنَكَ يَقُوۡلُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اِنۡ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّاۤ اَسَاطِيۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ
Wa-min-hoom-mun-yus-ta-may-o-elai-ka Wa-ja-ul-naa-alaa-qo-loo-bay-him Aa-kin-na-ton-un-yuf-qua-hoo-ho Wa-fee-aa-zaa-nay-him-wuq-raa
Wa-in-ya-rao-kool-la-aa-ya-tin-laa-yoe-may-noo-bay-haa Hut-taa-ezaa-jaa-oo-ka-yo-jaa-day-lo-na-ka Ya-qoo-lool-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo In-haa-zaa-il-laa-aa-saa-tee-rool-uw-wa-lee-n
And from them is he who acts hearing to you And we have placed on their hearts A blockage against that they understand it And a deafness in their ears.
And even if they see all signs, they won’t believe it. Till when they have come to you arguing, They — who had disbelieved — say, “Surely all this is nothing but the tales of those gone by.”

- يَّسۡتَمِعُ — Yus-ta-may-o — Acts hearing (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Acts or apparently, inattentively, ostensibly, outwardly and seemingly hears. Pretends to lend ear without really heeding, listening or paying any attention. A/t/a, ‘listen,’ ‘appear to listen,’ ‘(pretend) to listen,’ ‘give ear’ and ‘hearkens’)
- اِلَيۡ — E-lai — To (= In the direction of; to; towards)
- كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w See the Note 002:005. A/t/a, ‘thee’ )
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above. A/t/a, ‘but’ and ‘but because of their misdeeds’)
- جَعَلۡ — Ja-ul — Placed (= v., past., s., 3rd person., Appointed; brought into being; created; designed; fashioned; made; produced; set up. A/t/a, ‘placed,’ ‘have thrown,’ ‘cast,’ ‘have cast,’ ‘put,’ ‘have put’ and ‘have set’)
- نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
- عَلٰى — Alaa — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon)
- قُلُوۡبِ — Qo-loo-bay — Hearts (= n., pl., 1. The central organ inside the chest of all living creatures that keeps up the supply of blood to every tissue by pumping blood constantly through veins and controls all body parts and directs all their functions. 2. Mind; inner soul; ability to think, choose, decide and act in an appropriate manner both physically and spiritually; understanding. A/t/a, ‘hearts (due to their own hard-heartedness)’

- اَكِنَّةً — Aa-kin-na-ton — Blockage (= n., s., Blockade; cover; curtain; hurdle; obstruction; stoppage. A/t/a, ‘veils’ and ‘covering’)

- يَّفۡقَهُوۡ — Yuf-qa-hoo — Understand (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Acknowledge; comprehend A/t/a, ‘understand,’ ‘ which prevent them understanding,’ ‘lest they understand your words’ and ‘they understand … not’)

- يَّرَوۡا — Ya-rao — See (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Observe; notice; witness. A/t/a, ‘saw’ and ‘they were to witness’ in the past tense (showing that it was an event that had occurred in the past) is no translation of the Holy Qor-aan which has described the event in the present tense that occurs now and which will as a rule of universal application keep on occurring in future)
- كُلَّ — Kool-la — All (= n., All; altogether; everyone; everything without any exception; in every manner; total; very much; whole. Adv., Entirely; totally; wholly; exceedingly; greatly; highly A/t/a, ‘every one of,’ ‘every,’ ‘every kind of,’ ‘every one of’ and ‘any … whatever’)
- اٰيَةٍ — Aa-ya-tin — Signs (= n., pl of … An argument, corroboration, indication, insinuation, pointer, portent, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. See Note 002:074) A/t/a, ‘token,’ ‘sign,’ ‘sign (of Ours),’ ‘Our signs’ and ‘the Ayah (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.’)

- يُؤۡمِنُوۡا — Yoe-may-noo — They believe (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Believe in the Holy Qor-aan; become Moslem; enter Iss-laam. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘Will believe,’ ‘would … believe,’ ‘they do … believe’ and ‘they will … believe’)
- بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ means with. A/t/a, ‘in’)
- هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid group. A/t/a, ‘it,’ ‘them’ and ‘therein’)
- حَتّٰى — Hut-ta — Till (= By the end of the period or term; till the time. A/t/a, ‘In so much that,’ ‘so much so that,’ ‘to the point that,’ ‘even when’ and ‘(their hard-heartedness has reached) such an extent that’)
- اِذَا — Ezaa — When (= At the time, event, occasion or opportunity)
- جَآءُو — Jaa-oo — Have come (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Arrived; reached; returned. Also, the word can mean achieved, brought, delivered, settled, sought or succeeded. A/t/a, ‘they come’)
- كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. See كَ above. A/t/a, ‘unto thee,’ ‘to thee’ and ‘with you’)
- يُجَادِلُوۡنَ — Yo-jaa-day-loo-na — Arguing (= v., pres., 3rd person. Arguing; contending; fighting; contesting; disputing; offering lame excuses; resisting; wrangling. A/t/a ‘They (but) dispute,’ ‘they dispute,’ ‘disputing,’ ‘to argue with’ and ‘to contend’)

- كَفَرُوۡۤا — Ka-fa-roo — They disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah, the Holy Qor-aan, Islam and become Moslem. See our Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘The Unbelievers’ and ‘disbelievers’ which are nouns, and ‘disbelieve’ which is a verb in the present tense are no translations of the verb in the past tense that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
