The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                             006:070

 

وَمَا عَلَى الَّذِيۡنَ يَتَّقُوۡنَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِمۡ مِّنۡ شَىۡءٍ وَّلٰـكِنۡ ذِكۡرٰى لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُوۡنَ

 

Wa-maa-alul-la-zee-na-yut-ta-qoo-na                                                                                              Min-hay-saa-bay-hoom-min-shai-in                                                                                               Wa-laa-kin-zik-raa-la-ul-la-hoom-yut-ta-doo-n

 

And no blame is on those who are being pious                                                              For anything at all on their account.                                                                                      But in it is a reminder that they practice piety.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — No (= No, none; not at all. A/t/a, ‘are not’ and ‘Nothing of’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Ala … (ul) — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘falls upon’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons, or phenomenon or things in masculine gender)
  • يَتَّقُوۡنَ‌ — Yut-ta-qoo-n — Being pious (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. God fearing; mindful of duty to God; righteous; upright; ward off evil. See Commentary The Righteous and 002:005 for other differently worded meanings. A/t/a, ‘keep their duty,’ ‘guard against evil,’ ‘ward off evil’ and ‘fear Allah, keep their duty to Him and avoid evil.’ But ‘the righteous’ or ‘the pious’ are nouns and no translation of the verb that the Holy Qor-aan has used)

The sequence in next five (5) words is repeated in 006:053 and 006:070

  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • حِسَابِ — Hay-saa-bay — Account (= n., Adjustment; balance; closure; count; calculation; computation; measurement; reckoning; settlement.  Also, accounting, adjusting and balancing all credits and debits of an account to a final figure to close it. Bringing or calling to account. A/t/a, ‘accountable’ and ‘responsible’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; theirs. This pronoun refers to those who   practice piety as shown in translation “Those that fear are not by any means accountable for them.” But some authors construed as if it meant ‘these (evil doers)’ and ‘them (the disbelievers)’     
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See  مِنۡ  above)
  • شَىۡءٍ — Shai-in — At all (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit.  Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object,  material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To the least extent. Also, Some, something or somewhat. A/t/a, ‘in aught,’ ‘at all,’ ‘not in the least’ and ‘in any case’)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • لٰـكِنۡ — Laa-kin —  But (= However; instead; nevertheless; yet. A/t/a, ‘But (their duty) is’  and ‘but their duty is’)
  • ذِ كۡرٰى — Zik-raa — Reminder (= n., 1. An outsider’s acts … Admonishing; admonition;  refreshing memory; bringing to or drawing attention; reminder; reminding. Helping someone to recall and remember something forgotten. Jogging memory.  Making another aware. Urging another to do. Warning. 2.  An inner mind’s acts … Heeding; pondering; recall;  recollection; reflection’ remembrance; remembrance; remembering; thinking about. A/t/a, ‘to remind,’ ‘the Reminder (must be given them),’ ‘their duty is to admonish,’ ‘to admonish,’ ‘They are only to admonish (them)’ and ‘We remind them only’)
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la — So that (= Haply; hopefully; perchance; perhaps; possibly; hope  and wish; maybe; wanting and wishing the result to be. A/t/a, ‘so that,’ ‘That … may (learn …)’ and ‘that … may’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a, ‘they may,’ ‘they may too’ and ‘haply they (too)’
  • يَتَّقُوۡنَ — Yut-ta-qoo-n — Being pious (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. God fearing; mindful of duty to God; righteous; upright; ward off evil. See يَتَّقُوۡنَ  above. A/t/a, ‘guard against evil,’ ‘ward off (evil),’ ‘be pious,’ ‘guard themselves against evil,’ ‘fear God’ and ‘fear Allah.’  Also, authors M Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali have translated and commented this word as “fear Allah (and refrain from mocking at the Qur’an). [The provision of this Verse was abrogated by the Verse 4:140].” However, see Commentary Abrogation Theory)
