The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                    006:108

 

وَلَوۡ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ مَاۤ اَشۡرَكُوۡا ‌ؕ وَمَا جَعَلۡنٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيۡظًا‌  ۚ وَمَاۤ اَنۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِوَكِيۡلٍ

 

Wa-lao-shaa-ul-laa-ho-maa-ush-ra-koo                                                                                      Wa-maa-ja-ul-naa-ka-alai-him-ha-fe-zaa                                                                                      Wa-maa-un-ta-alai-him-bay-va-kee-l

 

And they would not have set up equals if Allah chose.                                                  And we have not made you a protector over them.                                                        And you are not with the Watch over them .

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَوۡ — Lao — If (= In case; under the circumstances; wish; would. A/t/a, ‘Had’)
  • شَآءَ — Shaa-a — He chose (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Allowed; approved; chose; decided; decreed; designed; determined; dictated; elected; enforced; liked; permitted; planned; pleased; preferred; selected; sanctioned; willed. The meanings ‘desired, wanted or wished’ do not apply relative to the Almighty God Who has all control, power and will to implement instantly what He intends. A/t/a, ‘it had been … Plan,’ ‘Had … willed,’ ‘enforced His will,’ ‘had (enforced) His will,’ ‘had pleased’ and ‘Had … pleased’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not (= Never; no; none; not at all)
  • اَشۡرَكُوۡۤا — Ush-ra-koo — Set up equals (= v., past. pl., 3rd person. Practiced idolatry.  Alleged, asserted, associated or attributed partners to God Almighty. Worshiped deities or anyone other than Him Alone. See Note 003:187 and Note 004:037. A/t/a, ‘They would … have taken False gods,’ ‘they would … have associated partners with Him,’ ‘set up others (with Him),’ ‘they had … been idolaters,’ ‘they would … have set up partners with Him,’ ‘they would … have taken others besides Him in worship,’ ‘they would … have been polytheists’ and ‘worshipped idols’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not (= Never; no; not; not at all)
  • جَعَلۡ — Ja-ul — Made (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Appointed; brought into being; created; designed; fashioned; made; produced; set up. A/t/a, ‘set’)
  • نَآ  — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our. Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • كَ — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You. See Note 002:005. A/t/a, ‘thee’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — Over (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • حَفِيۡظًا‌ — Ha-fe-zaa — As a guardian  (= n., Protector; responsible; warden; watch. A/t/a, ‘one To watch over their doings,’ ‘keeper,’ ‘guardian’ and ‘watcher’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not (= Never; no; not; not at all. A/t/a, ‘Nor’ and ‘neither’)
  • اَنۡتَ — Un-ta — Surely you (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. You single male. Combined the words  اَنۡ  and  تَ   are best translated as ‘Surely you.’ See Note 002:128. A/t/a, ‘art thou,’ thou are … placed,’ ‘thou art thou,’ ‘are you’ and ‘you are’)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — Over (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over. A/t/a, ‘for’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. A/t/a, ‘their’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word  بِ  means with)
  • وَّكِيۡلٌ — Va-kee-l — Watch (= n., Controller; guardian; in-charge; responsible; watch. It is inappropriate to translate this attribute of God Almighty as a representative, speaker on other’s behalf or trustee. A/t/a, ‘guardian,’ ‘in-charge,’ ‘responsible,’ ‘to dispose of  their affairs,’ ‘disposer of their affairs,’ ‘disposer of affairs, guardian or trustee’ and  ‘trustee’)

 

** Note: 006:108. Some authors appear to have just copied the verbiage of others before them like the one [msa] who used ‘not made thee’ and ‘nor art thou’ in translating this verse.
