The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                   006:110

 

وَاَقۡسَمُوۡا بِاللّٰهِ جَهۡدَ اَيۡمَانِهِمۡ لَٮِٕنۡ جَآءَتۡهُمۡ اٰيَةٌ لَّيُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهَا‌  ؕ  قُلۡ اِنَّمَا الۡاٰيٰتُ عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ‌ وَمَا يُشۡعِرُكُمۙۡ اَنَّهَاۤ اِذَا جَآءَتۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa-uq-sa-moo-bil-laa-hay-jauh-da-aiy-maa-nay-him                                                                La-in-jaa-ut-hoom-aa-ya-toon-la-yoe-may-noon-na-bay-haa                                                 Qool-inna-mul-aa-yaa-to-in-dul-laa-hay                                                                                          Wa-maa-yoosh-aiy-ro-koom                                                                                                              Unna-haa-ezaa-jaa-ut-laa-yoe-may-noon

 

And they swore by Allah their strongest of oaths, saying:                                      Most certainly they would believe in it if a Sign came.                                             Say, “Surely Signs come from Allah.                                                                               And what would make you realize for sure                                                                        That when that Sign came, they won’t believe.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اَقۡسَمُوۡا — Uq-sa-moo — Swore (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Affirmed; cited as a witness;    took oath; swore A/t/a, ‘swore’ and ‘They have sworn.’ But the present tense in ‘they swear’ and ‘they … swear’ is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in the past tense)
  • بِ  — Bay … (il) — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘by’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • جَهۡدَ — Jauh-da — Strongest (= Adj., The best, highest, earnest, strongest or tops. A/t/a, ‘most  earnest,’ ‘solemn’ and ‘solemnly’)
  • اَيۡمَانِ — Aiy-maa-nay — Oaths (= n., Affirmations; declarations; pledge; promise; vow;  statements of truth, trust and confidence. A/t/a, ‘Oaths’ and ‘oath’)
  • هِمۡ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • لَ  — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely;  doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when; whenever.  A/t/a, ‘that’)
  • جَآءَتۡ  — Jaa-ut — Came (= v., past., s., f., 3rd person. Arrived; came; had come; reached; returned. In a different context the word may mean achieved, brought, delivered, settled or succeeded. A/t/a, ‘came,’ ‘there came,’ ‘there come,’ ‘there comes,’ ‘should come,’ ‘come’ and ‘be given’)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a,  ‘unto them’ and ‘to them’)
  • اٰيَةٌ —  Aa-ya-toon — A sign (= n., s., An argument, corroboration, indication, pointer, insinuation, portent, proof, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. See Note 002:074. A/t/a, ‘a sign,’ ‘A (special) Sign,’ ‘a (particular) sign’ and ‘a portent’)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Surely. See  لَ  above.. A/t/a, ‘invariably’)
  • يُؤۡمِنُنَّ — Yoe-may-noon-na — Believe (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Accept, admit, believe, have faith or recognize truthfulness. of the Holy Qor-aan and become Moslem. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘they will believe,’ ‘they would believe’ and ‘they would … believe’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘by’ and ‘in.’ This word jointly with the next one have also been translated as ‘therein’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid Sign)
  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Admonish; announce, argue; assure; broadcast; call; convey; elaborate; explain; inform; instruct; maintain, persist; preach; proclaim; profess; propagate; state; teach, tell. See Notes 112:002 and Commentary ‘You say’ means.” A/t/a, ‘Say to them’ and ‘Say, (not to speak of a single sign)’
  • اِنَّمَا — In-na-maa — Most certainly (= Combination of two words. The first word اِنَّ (inna) means absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily. The second word  مَاۤ  (maa) means all that, what; whatever. whatsoever. Thus  اِنَّمَا  (inna-maa) lays great emphasis on the statement that follows it as absolutely, positively and most certainly accurate’. A/t/a, ‘Surely’  and ‘indeed’)
  • الۡاٰيٰتُ — Aa-ya-to — Signs (= n., p. See  اٰيَةٌ  above. A/t/a,‘many signs,’ ‘(All) Signs’ and ‘Portents’)
  • عِنۡدَ– In-da … (ul) — From (= At; close at hand; from; in; in close proximity of; with. A/t/a, ‘are in the power Of,’ ‘with,’ ‘but with’ and ‘vouchsafed by’)
  • اللّٰهِ‌ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘Then’  and ‘also’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — What (= Whatever. A/t/a, ‘what,’ ‘what should,’ ‘that which,’ ’what is’ and ‘how would’)
  • يُشۡعِرُ — Yoosh-aiy-ro — Make realize (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Make aware; has info. A/t/a, ‘but what will Make … (Muslims) realise,’ ‘will make you (Muslims) perceive,’  ‘make … know,’ ‘make … understand,’ ‘(so it) that which telleth,’ ‘there to assure,’ ‘you know’ and ‘how can … tell’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • اَنَّ — Un-na — That (= A/t/a, ‘that,’ ‘that if,’ ‘That (even) if’ and ‘that even when’)
  • هَا —  Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid Sign. A/t/a, ‘(special) Signs,’  ‘the Signs’ and ‘it (the sign)’
  • اِذَا — Ezaa —  When (= At the time or event. A/t/a, ‘when’ and ‘if’)
  • جَآءَتۡ — Jaa-ut — Came (= v., past., s., f., 3rd person. Arrived; came; had come. See جَآءَ تۡ above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ — Yoe-may-noo-na — They Believe (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Believes in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslem; enters Iss-laam. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘believe,’ ‘they will … believe,’ ‘they would … believe,’ ‘they will indeed believe in it’ and ‘they will still … believe’)
