قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا اَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَيۡكُمۡ‌ اَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوۡا بِهٖ شَيۡـًٔـــا وَّبِالۡوَالِدَيۡنِ اِحۡسَانًا‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا اَوۡلَادَكُمۡ مِّنۡ اِمۡلَاقٍ‌ؕ نَحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَاِيَّاهُمۡ‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا الۡفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ‌ ۚ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوا النَّفۡسَ الَّتِىۡ حَرَّمَ اللّٰهُ اِلَّا بِالۡحَـقِّ‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمۡ وَصّٰٮكُمۡ بِهٖ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏

 

Qool  ta-aa-lao  ut-lo  maa  hur-ra-ma  rub-bo  koom                                                            Alai  koom  ul-laa  toosh-ray-koo  bay  he  shai-un                                                                        Wa  bay  il-waa-lay-dai-nay  eh-saa-naa                                                                                          Wa  laa  tuq-to-loo  auo-laa-do  koom  min  im-laaq                                                                      Nah-no  nur-zo-qo  koom  wa  iyyaa  hoom.

Wa  laa  tuq-ra-boo  ol-fa-waa-hay-sha                                                                                      Maa  za-ha-ra  min  haa  wa  maa  ba-ta-na

Wa  laa  tuq-to-loo  un-nuf-sa  ul-la-ti                                                                                            Hur-ra-ma  ul-la-ho  il-laa  bay  il-huq

Zaa-lay-koom  wa-uss-sa  koom  bay  he                                                                                        La-ul-la  koom  tau-qay-loo-n

 

Say, “Come. I’ll tell what your Lord has prohibited                                                   For you is that you do not associate with Him anything                                                And with parents be kind.                                                                                                   And do not kill your children for fear of poverty.                                                        We provide for you and them too.

And do not even get near the indecencies                                                                        Whether from it are exposed in openness or hidden in secrecy.

And do not kill a person which                                                                                                Allah has forbidden except with justification.  

With this He has admonished you                                                                                        So that you may act wisely.

 

  • قُلۡ  — Qool — Say (= v., pres., s, 2nd person. Admonish; announce, argue;  broadcast; call; command; convey; declare; elaborate; explain; inform; insist; instruct; maintain, mandate; order; persist; preach; proclaim; profess; propagate; specify; state; teach, tell; tutor.   • تَعَالَوۡا — Ta-aa-lao — Come (= Come along. A/t/a, ‘let me’)
  • اتۡلُ — Ut-lo –I tell (= v., pres., s, 1st person. Describe; convey; give; narrate;  recite; relate; sing; state; tell. A/t/a, ‘I will recite,’ ‘I will recite to you,’ ‘I will recite unto you,’ ‘I will rehearse to you,’ ‘let me rehearse to you’ and ‘I will tell you’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever; at such time; when. A/t/a, ‘that which’)
  • حَرَّمَ — Hur-rum — Prohibited (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Banned; barred; disallowed; disapproved; excluded; forbidden; interdicted; made illegal; outlawed; not authorized or permitted; proscribed; stopped. A/t/a, ‘has forbidden,’ ‘has enjoined,’ ‘has made a sacred duty for you’ and ‘has made binding’)
  • رَبُّ — Rub-bo — GOD / LORD (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all creatures. Cherisher. Creator. Guardian. Lord Provident. Master. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist. See 001:002)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan generally addresses this way men and women jointly )
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — For (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمُ  above)
  • اَلَّا — Ul-laa —  That + not (= Can’t, don’t or won’t. Not; fail to; refuse to; will not. Also, so that.  This one word is a combination of two words.  The 1st word is  اَنۡ  (un) and means that. The 2nd word is  لَا  (laa) and means never, no or not at all. Combined they mean ‘so that’ or ‘this result is due to the reason that’. A/t/a, ‘that … not anything,’ ‘it is that … not’ and ‘naught’)
  • تُشۡرِكُوۡا — Toosh-ray-koo — Set up equals (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. You practice idolatry. Allege, assert, associate or attribute partners to Almighty God. You worship deities or anyone beside Him and become an idolater, Polytheist or an unbelieving pagan. See Note 003:187 and Note 004:037. A/t/a, ‘associate,’ ‘associate as partner,’ ‘associate … as partners,’ ‘associate partners,’ ‘you shall associate,’ ‘you shall serve no other gods,’ ‘Join … in worship’ and ‘ye ascribe … as partner’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with,’ ‘besides’ and ‘unto’)
  • هٖ — He — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • شَيۡـًٔـــا — Shai-aa — Thing (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit. Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object, material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To  the least extent. Also, Some, something or somewhat. A/t/a, ‘anything as partner’)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • بِ  — Bay … (il) — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with.  A/t/a, ‘towards’ and ‘to’)
  • الۡوَالِدَيۡنِ — Waa-lay-dai-nay — Parents (= n., pl., Includes father and mothers, h.h.s. A/t/a, ‘your parents’)
  • اِحۡسَانًا‌ — Eh-saa-naa — Be kind (= Show amity, benevolence, compassion, consideration, decency, excellence, gentleness, generosity, goodness, gratitude, helpfulness, honesty, kindheartedness, kindness, nicely, nicety, righteousness, thoughtfulness, sympathy or virtue. Also, bigheartedly; charitably; generously; kindly, liberally; openhandedly. A/k/a, ‘do good,’ ‘that you do good,’ ‘shall be good,’ ‘show kindness,’ ‘shall show kindness’ and ‘be good and dutiful’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا — Tuq-to-loo — You kill (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Destroy; end life; murder; slay;  slaughter. In the pre-Islamic era when Arab Bedouins killed their daughters at birth (081:009), and other meanings of this word such as fight, oppose, perish, push back, retaliate, ruin, self-defense, etc., see 003:196. A/t/a, ‘slay,’ ‘kill,’ ‘destroy’ and ‘waste’)
  • اَوۡلَادَ — Auo-laa-da — Children (= n., pl., Babies. Boys and girls. Future generations. Infants. Off-springs. Sons and daughters. Progeny.                                                               Successors. A/t/a, ‘children’ and  ‘offspring’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمۡ  above)
  • مِنۡ — Min — For fear of (= Among, from or out of several reasons. A/t/a, ‘for fear of’ and ‘because’)
  • اِمۡلَاق — Im-laaq — Poverty (= n., pl. Absence of money, property or other sources. Also the consequences of eventually meeting your  children whom you killed. Modern birth-control could fall within the purview of this verse. A/t/a, ‘fear of poverty,’ ’of penury’ and ‘you cannot support  them’)
  • نَحۡنُ — Nah-no — We (= pro., pl., m & f., 1st person. A/t/a, ‘It is We’)
  • نَرۡزُقُ — Nur-zo-qo — We provide (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Provide food, shelter, clothing, sustenance and other necessities of life. A/t/a, ‘it is We Who provide,’ ‘We Who make provisions’ and ‘We will bestow’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You. See  كُمۡ above))
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • اِيَّا — Iyya — Only (= Alone; excluding any and all others. A/t/a, ‘as well for … too’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ   above)
  • لَا — Laa — No / not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See لَا  above)
  • تَقۡرَبُوا — Tuq-ra-boo — Come near (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Begin, commence or initiate; taking early, first and initial steps; come close to; draw, get or go near. Come close to. Get or go near. A/t/a, ‘draw … nigh,’ ‘approach,’ ‘(Allah has also enjoined upon you that you) approach’ or ‘shall not commit’)
  • الۡفَوَاحِشَ — Fa-waa-hay-sha — Lewdness (= n., pl., Abomination. Illegality. Immorality. Indecency. Inherently bad, evil, foul, immoral, improper, lewd. Sexual perversion. Violation. Wickedness by doing in public view any of the outrages. See 004:016. A/t/a,  ‘indecencies,’ ‘foul deeds,’ ‘evil of any kind,’ ‘lewd things,’ ‘foul sins,’  ‘abomination’ and ‘Al-fawahish (shameful sins and illegal sexual intercourse’)
  • مَاۤ  — Maa — All that (= What; whatever. See  مَاۤ  above. A/t/a, whether’)
  • ظَهَرَ — Za-ha-ra — Exposed (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Committed manifestly, openly,  publicly; visibly. Denuded. Exposed; A/t/a, ‘committed openly,’ ‘open,’ ‘manifest’ and ‘turned wide-open’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of a class. See مِنۡ  above)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid group)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • مَاۤ —  Maa — All that (= What; whatever. See  مَاۤ  above)
  • بَطَنَ — Ba-ta-na — Hidden (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Something hidden and kept  secret. The word means belly or stomach and implies secrecy. A/t/a, ‘hidden,’ ‘secret,’ ‘in secret,’ ‘committed secretly’ and ‘concealed’)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See لَا  above)
  • تَقۡتُلُوا — Tuq-to-loo … (n) — You kill (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Destroy; slay; See تَقۡتُلُوۡۤا above)
  • النَّفۡسَ — Nuf-sa — Person (= n., s., Person; soul. A/t/a, ‘the life’ and ‘anyone’)
  • ٱلَّتِى — Al-la-tee — (She) which (= s., f., 3rd person. An article, group, thing, person or phenomenon in feminine gender. A/t/a, ‘which’ and ‘the slaying of which’)
  • حَرَّمَ — Hur-ra-ma — Prohibited (= v., past., s., 3rd person. See حَرَّمَ above. Banned; barred; disallowed. A/t/a, ‘made sacred,’ ‘hath made sacred,’ ‘has declared sacred’ and ‘for that is forbidden’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • اِلَّاۤ — Il-laa — Nothing but (= Except; ‘save’)
  • بِ — Bay … (il) — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘for,’ ‘by,’ ‘in the course,’ ‘in accordance with the demands of’ and ‘in the cause)
  • الۡحَـقِّ — Al-Haq — Justification (= n., Appropriate; equitable; exactness; fair; fairness;    just; just cause; justification; justice; justified conduct; preciseness; proper; reasonableness; right; suitable. A/t/a, ‘just cause,’ ‘justice,’ ‘in the course of justice,’  ‘in the cause of justice,’ ‘right’ and ‘a just cause (according to Islamic law)’
  • ذٰ لِكُمُ — Zaa-lay-ko-mo(l) — This is your (= This is a combination of three words. ذٰ means This. لِ means for the object, person, purpose or reason. And  كُمۡ  means you all. The combination means this is you or yours. A/t/a, ‘This,’ ‘That is’ and ‘Thus’)
  • وَصّٰ — Wuss-saa — Admonished (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Advised; commanded; laid down; mandated; ordered. A/t/a, ‘He has enjoined,’ ‘has He enjoined,’ ‘He hath  commanded’ and commanded. But ‘He enjoins’ and ‘exhorts’ in the present tense are no translations of the past tense that the Holy Qor-aan has used in its text)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You men. See كُمۡ above. A/t/a, ‘upon you’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with’ and ‘upon’)
  • هٖ — He — This (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person)
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la– So that (= Haply; hopefully; perchance; perhaps; possibly; hope and wish; maybe; wanting and wishing the result to be. A/t/a, ‘that … may,’ ‘in order that … may’ and ‘so that’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. See  كُمۡ above)
  • تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ‏ — Tau-qay-loon — You act wisely (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act intelligently, sensibly and  smartly; understand; utilize common sense. A/t/a, ’understand,’ ‘discern,’ ‘may (learn to) abstain (from evil)’ and ‘may grow in wisdom’)
