The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                007:053

 

وَلَقَدۡ جِئۡنٰهُمۡ بِكِتٰبٍ فَصَّلۡنٰهُ عَلٰى عِلۡمٍ هُدًى وَّرَحۡمَةً لِّـقَوۡمٍ يُّؤۡمِنُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa  la  qaud  jaiy-naa  hoom  bay  kay-taa-bin                                                                              Faus-sul  naa  ho  alaa  il-min                                                                                                          Ho-daun  wa  rauh-ma-taun  lay  qao-mim  yoe-may-noo-n

 

And certainly We came to them with a Book that                                                          We explained it based upon knowledge                                                                        That is guidance and mercy for people who believe.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily. A/t/a, ‘Although’ )
  • قَدۡ — Qaud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis like very definitely; surely. See Note 004:049)

The next four words together mean We came with = We brought

  • جِئۡنٰ — Jaiy-naa — We came (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Achieved, appeared; arrived; came to pass; landed. See Note 001:007 how this verb in the 3rd person followed by the next word   نَآ  turned it to mean in the 1st person. A/t/a, ‘had brought,’ ‘have brought,’ ‘brought,’ ‘sent’ and ‘bestowed’)
  • هُمۡ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs. A/t/a, ‘these people’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word  بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘with’ and ‘unto’)
  • كِتٰبٍ — Kay-taa-bin — The Book (= n., The Divine Directive of Commands, Prohibitions   and Regulations. Holy Scripture. See verse 002:003. A/t/a, ‘a Book,’ ‘a great Book,’ ‘a Book (the Qur’an)’ and ‘Scripture’)
  • فَصَّلۡنٰ — Faus-saul — We explained (= v., past., pl., 1st person. Elaborated; enriched; encircled; entrenched; explained. Lain clearly. Self-explanatory. See Note 007:053 below and 001:007. A/t/a, ‘We have  expounded,’ ‘we expounded,’ ‘we explained in detail,’ ‘We have explained in detail,’ ‘We had made clear,’ ‘well-expounded’ and ‘We have imbued.’ But the present tense as in ‘We make clear’ has not translated the Holy Qor-aan text in the past tense)
  • هُ — Ho — It (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid Book and translated as ‘which’)
  • عَلٰى — Alaa — Based upon (= Above; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘with’ and ‘Based on’)
  • عِلۡمٍ — Il-min  — Knowledge (= n., Awareness; experience; expertise; familiarity with  facts; intellect; intelligence know-how; power of mind; solid information accumulated based upon wisdom; intelligence, perfect knowledge, total awareness and appropriate instruction)
  • هُدًى — Ho-daun — Guidance (= n., The action, direction, instruction, means or set up to  show the best beacon, correct course, enlightened entry, linear lines, proper path, right road, wise ways or the knowledge about what is most appropriate. A/t/a,’ a guide’)
  • وَّ — Wa  — And (= Conj., It links words, phrases or clauses. See  وَ   above)
  • رَحۡمَةً — Rauh-ma-taun — Mercy (= n., Beneficence. Clemency. Compassion. Condoning.  Forgiveness.  Intercession.  Intervention.  Kindness. Leniency. Omitting, relenting or waiving punishment. A/t/a, ‘a mercy’ and ‘a blessing’)
  • لِّ — Lay — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • قَوۡمٍ — Qao-min — A people (= n., s., Addressees; attendees; fellows; followers; folks;  nation; party; people; tribe. A/t/a, ‘a people’)
  • يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ  —  Yoe-may-noo-na — They Believe (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Enter faith; follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Iss-laam and are Moslems. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘true believers’)

 

** 007:053. The root  ف  ص  ل  carries the meanings of protection. The derivate فصيل  means that strong outer wall that used to protect old fortresses against external invaders. The word فَصَّلۡ means encircled, entrenched, fortified, protected and surrounded. In reference to the Book and in the context of this verse the best translation is enriched, expounded and explained.
