The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                              026:073

قَالَ هَلۡ يَسۡمَعُوۡنَكُمۡ اِذۡ تَدۡعُوۡنَۙ‏ 

Qaa-la-hul-yus-ma-oo-na-koom-iz-tud-oo-n

He said, ‘Do they hear you when you call?”

  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person. Announced; called; conveyed;  declared; informed; specified; told. A/t/a, ‘He asked’ and ‘Abraham said’)
  • هَل — Hull — Do (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have, had, shell, should, what, will, would, etc.)
  • يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ‌  — Yus-ma-oo-na — They hear (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Refers to a sound that is heard. They give an ear, heed, listen, pay attention or respond. A/t/a, ‘listen to you’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • اِذۡ — Iz — When (= At the time or event; call to mind; recall; remember; think of the time, event, occasion or opportunity. Also, behold; consider; ponder over; reflect)
  • تَدۡعُوۡنَ‌ — Tud-oo-na — You call (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Beseech, call for help; pray;  seek help. A/t/a, ‘you call (on them),’ ‘you call on them,’ ‘ye call (on them)’ and ‘ye cry’)

اَوۡ يَنۡفَعُوۡنَكُمۡ اَوۡ يَضُرُّوۡنَ‏

Auo-yun-fa-oo-na-koom-auo-ya-dzoor-roo-n

“Or they benefit you or they harm.” 

  • اَوۡ — Auo — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution)
  • يَنۡفَعُوۡنَ — Yun-fa-oo-na — They benefit (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. A/t/a, ‘Do … good,’ ‘do they benefit … in any way,’ ’do they benefit,’ ‘they benefit’ and ‘can they help’)
  • كُمۡ  — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • اَوۡ — Auo — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution)
  • يَضُرُّوۡنَ  — Ya-dzoo-roo-n — They harm (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Hurt; injure. A/t/a, ‘do you any harm,’ ‘do you harm’ and ‘avert harm from you’)

قَالُوۡا بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ اٰبَآءَنَا كَذٰلِكَ يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ

Qaa-loo-bul-wa-jud-naa-aa-baa-aa-na-ka-zaa-lay-ka-yuf-aa-loo-n 

They said, “But we found our forefathers do like this.”

  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past, pl., m., 3rd person. Announced; called; conveyed; declared; informed; specified; told. A/t/a, ‘answered’ and ‘They replied’)
  • بَلۡ — Bul — The fact is (= Aye; but; but the truth is; however; indeed; instead; in  truth; nay; nevertheless; of course; on the contrary; rather; really; truthfully; verily; yea but. A/t/a, ‘Nay, but,’ ‘Not so; but,’ ‘Not so, but,’ ‘Nay, it is not so, but’ and ‘No, but’ )
  • وَجَدۡ — Wa-jud — Found (= v., past, pl., 1st person. Got; discovered; reached; received.  A/t/a, ‘found’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • اٰبَآءَ — Aa-baa-aa — Forefathers (= n., pl., A/t/a, ‘fathers’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • كَذٰلِكَ — Ka-zaa-lay-ka — Like this (= Combines two words. كَ  means ‘example, like, identical, resembling, similar.’ ذٰلِكَ means ‘all this right in here and refers to an aforesaid event, fact, person or statement. The combination means ‘even so,’ ‘so it will be,’ ‘such is the way,’ ‘the same way,’ ‘that is how’ or ‘this way’. A/t/a, ‘Thus (what),’ ‘so,’ ‘the same,’ ‘likewise,’ ‘on this wise’ and ‘this was what’)
  • يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ — Yuf-aa-loon — They do (= v., pres., m., pl., 3rd person. Act; behave; commit; deal; do; perform; render; return; proceed; treat. A/t/a, ‘doing,’ ‘acting’ and ‘did before us’)
