The Holy Qor-aan           080:001 to 005

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. Chapter # 80                                     Soora-to-Aa-Ba-Sa                                            سُوۡرَةُ عَبَسَ

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰٓى ۙ ○   اَنۡ جَآءَهُ الۡاَعۡمٰى ؕ‏ ○   وَمَا يُدۡرِيۡكَ لَعَلَّهٗ يَزَّكّٰٓى ۙ‏ ○   اَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنۡفَعَهُ الذِّكۡرٰى ؕ‏ ○   اَمَّا مَنِ اسۡتَغۡنٰى ۙ‏ ○    فَاَنۡتَ لَهٗ تَصَدّٰى ؕ○‏   وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ اَلَّا يَزَّكّٰٓى ؕ‏ ○   وَاَمَّا مَنۡ جَآءَكَ يَسۡعٰى ۙ‏ ○    وَهُوَ يَخۡشٰى ۙ‏ ○   فَاَنۡتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهّٰى ۚ‏ ○   كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٌ ۚ‏ ○   فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗ ○‌ۘ‏    فِىۡ صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۙ‏ ○   مَّرۡفُوۡعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ۙ ○   بِاَيۡدِىۡ سَفَرَةٍۙ ○   كِرَامٍۢ بَرَرَةٍؕ‏ ○   قُتِلَ الۡاِنۡسَانُ مَاۤ اَكۡفَرَهٗ ؕ‏ ○   مِنۡ اَىِّ شَىۡءٍ خَلَقَهٗؕ‏ ○    مِنۡ نُّطۡفَةٍؕ خَلَقَهٗ فَقَدَّرَهٗ ۙ‏ ○  ثُمَّ السَّبِيۡلَ يَسَّرَهٗ ۙ‏ ○   ثُمَّ اَمَاتَهٗ فَاَقۡبَرَهٗۙ ○   ‏ ثُمَّ اِذَا شَآءَ اَنۡشَرَهٗؕ‏ ○   كَلَّا لَـمَّا يَقۡضِ مَاۤ اَمَرَهٗؕ‏ ○ فَلۡيَنۡظُرِ الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِلٰى طَعَامِهٖۤۙ‏ ○  اَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا الۡمَآءَ صَبًّا ۙ ○ ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا الۡاَرۡضَ شَقًّا
فَاَنۡۢبَتۡنَا فِيۡهَا حَبًّا ۙ ○ وَّ عِنَبًا وَّقَضۡبًا ۙ‏○  وَّزَيۡتُوۡنًا وَّنَخۡلًا ؕ‏ ○ وَحَدَآٮِٕقَ غُلۡبًا ۙ‏○ وَّفَاكِهَةً وَّاَبًّا ۙ‏ ○ مَّتَاعًا لَّـكُمۡ وَلِاَنۡعَامِكُمۡ ؕ ○ فَاِذَا جَآءَتِ الصَّآخَّة ُ○  يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ الۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ اَخِيۡهِ ۙ‏ ○  وَاُمِّهٖ وَاَبِيۡهِ ۙ‏ ○ وَصَاحِبَتِهٖ وَبَنِيۡهِ ؕ‏○  لِكُلِّ امۡرِیءٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ شَاۡنٌ يُّغۡنِيۡهِ ؕ‏ ○ وُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ مُّسۡفِرَةٌ ۙ‏ ○ ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٌ ۚ‏ ○ وَوُجُوۡهٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٌ ۙ‏○  تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ؕ‏ ○ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ الۡكَفَرَةُ الۡفَجَرَةُ‏

1. Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem
2. Aa-ba-sa-wa-ta-wul-la
3. Un-jaa-aa-hool-au-maa
4. Wa-maa-yood-ree-ka-la-ul-la-hoo-yuz-zuk-ka
5. Auo-yuz-zuk-ka-ro-fa-tun-fa-o-hooz-zik-raa
6. Um-maa-ma-nis-tugh-naa
7. Fa-un-ta-la-hoo-ta-sud-daa
8. Wa-maa-alai-ka-ul-laa-yuz-zuk-ka
9. Wa-um-maa-mun-jaa-a-ka-yus-aa
10. Wa-ho-wa-yukh-shaa
11. Fa-un-ta-un-ho-ta-lauh-haa
12. Kul-laa-in-na-haa-tuz-kay-rauh
13. Fa-mun-shaa-aa-za-ka-rauh
14. Fee-so-ho-finm-mo-kur-ra-ma-tin
15. Mur-foo-aa-tinm-mo-tauh-ra-tin
16. Bay-ai-dee-sa-fa-ra-tin
17. Ke-raa-minb-ba-ra-rauh
18. Quo-tay-lul-in-saa-no-maa-uk-fa-ra-hoo
19. Min-auy-yay-shai-in-kha-la-qa-hoo
20. Min-noot-fa-tin-kha-la-qa-hoo-fa-qud-da-ra-hoo
21. Thoom-mus-sa-bee-la-yus-sa-ra-hoo
22. Thoom-ma-aa-maa-ta-hoo-fa-uk-ba-ra-hoo
23. Thoom-ma-ezaa-shaa-aa-un-sha-ra-hoo
24. Kul-laa-lum-maa-yuk-dzay-maa-aa-ma-ra-hoo
25. Ful-yun-zo-ril-in-saa-no-elaa-ta-aa-may-he
26. Un-naa-sa-bub-nul-maa-aa-sub-bun
27. Thoom-ma-sha-quq-nul-ur-dza-shuq-qun
28. Fa-un-but-naa-fee-haa-hub-bun
29. Wa-aay-na-bun-wa-qudz-bun
30. Wa-zai-too-nun-wa-nukh-lun
31. Wa-ha-daa-eka-ghool-bun
32. Wa-faa-kay-ha-tunw-wa-ub-bun
33. Ma-taa-un-la-koom-wa-lay-un-aa-may-koom
34. Fa-ezaa-jaa-aa-tiss-saa-kha-to
35. Yao-ma-ya-fer-rool-mur-o-min-aa-khee-hay
36. Wa-oom-may-he-wa-abee-hay
37. Wa-saa-heba-tay-he-wa-ba-nee-hay
38. Lay-kool-lim-ray-im-min-hoom-yao-ma-e-zin-shau-noon-yoogh-nee-hay
39. Wo-joo-hoon-yao-ma-e-zinm-moos-fay-ra-toon
40. Dzaa-heka-toonm-moos-tub-shay-ra-toon
41. Wa-wo-joo-hoon-yao-ma-zin-alai-haa-gha-ba-ra-toon
42. Tur-ha-qo-haa-qa-ta-rauh
43. Olaa-eka-ho-mool-ka-fa-ra-tool-fa-ja-rauh

1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.
2. He frowned and turned away
3. Because the blind man come to him
4. And who could tell you that he would cleanse
5. Or he would pay attention so that the attention could benefit him.
6. As far him who is indifferent
7. Then you have all the attention for him
8. And it is not up to you that he won’t cleanse.
9. And as far him who came to you making special effort
10. And he was fearing God
11. Then you forget about him.
12. The fact is that this indeed is a reminder
13. Then whoever chose paid it attention
14. Written in Scriptures honored
15. Exalted, Sanctified
16. Written with the hands of the scribes
17. Respected, Righteous.
18. Woe unto man; how ungrateful he is
19. From what thing He created him?
20. Out of a sperm-drop He created him. Then He proportioned him in good measures
21. Then the right road He smoothes for him
22. Then He caused his death. Then He put him in a grave.
23. Then when He chose He resurrected him.
24. The fact is that he (man) has not yet fully done what He had commanded him
25. So man certainly should look at his food
26. We surely poured down water in abundance
27. Then we split the earth with real plowing
28. Then we grew in it a seed
29. And grapes and vegetables
30. And olives and dates
31. And gardens in dense growth
32. And fruits and fodder
33. As a provision for you and for your cattle.
34. So when the Loud Scream has come
35. That day man will run from his brother
36. And his mother and his father
37. And his mate and his sons
38. For everyone among them that day would be a concern to make him indifferent
39. Some faces that day glowing
40. Laughing, joyous
41. And some faces that day with dust all over them
42. Darkness covering them
43. They all are the disbelievers, the wicked

The Holy Qor-aan                                         080:001                                  ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

  • بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         080:002                                                  عَبَسَ وَتَوَلّٰٓى             
Aa-ba-sa-wa-ta-wul-la

                He frowned and turned away

  • عَبَسَ — Aa-ba-sa — He frowned (= Dislike; showed displeasure)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • تَوَلّٰٓى — Ta-wul-laa — Turned away (= v.,  Detoured to a different, opposite or wrong direction,  path, road or way;  diverted from or ignored the truth;  fell in error;  paid or gave no heed;  rejected;  slid  back;  side-stepped;  turned back;  took another  road;  turned aside or backward;  was averse; went back; withdrew)

* Note 080:002.   This chapter elaborates a rule of social etiquette which has Universal Application.   It was revealed after the Holy Prophet s.a.w was talking to disbelieving leaders of the Quraish tribe.   He was interrupted by a blind person named Abdullah bin Omme Makhtum by asking a question.   He ignored the interruption, continued talking and received the important lesson in this revelation.   This Soorah quelled any possible criticism although the blind man did not see himself as ignored.   Read our Commentary The Interruptions to a Speaker on this issue.

The Holy Qor-aan                                         080:003                                             اَنۡ جَآءَهُ الۡاَعۡمٰى ؕ

                 Un-jaa-aa-hool-au-maa

                Because the blind man had come to him

  • اَنۡ — Un — Because (= Due to; for the reason or purpose; since; that; when)
  • جَآءَ — Jaa-aa –Had come (= v., past., Achieved; arrived; reached; become manifest in the fulfillment of the divine prophecies)
  • هُ — Ho..(ol) — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Holy Prophet s.a.w
  • الۡاَعۡمٰى — Au-maa — Blind man (= Who with impaired eyesight or inability could not see)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         080:004                                     وَمَا يُدۡرِيۡكَ لَعَلَّهٗ يَزَّكّٰٓى ۙ

                   Wa-maa-yood-ree-ka-la-ul-la-hoo-yuz-zuk-ka

                 And who could tell you that he would cleanse

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Who / what (= 1. Whoever; whoso. 2. What; whatever; whatsoever)
  • يُدۡرِيۡ — Yood-ree — Could tell * (= Inform; make it known)
  • ك — Ka — You (= pro., s., m., 2nd person. Also, Your or Yours)
  • لَعَلَّ — La-ul-la — Would (= Haply; hopefully; maybe; might; perchance; perhaps; possibly; so that; wishing and hoping for something)
  • هٗ — Hoo — He (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘blind man’)
  • يَزَّكّٰٓى — Yuz-zuk-ka — Cleanse (= 1. Clean; purify; sanctify.  2. Make someone develop and grow by the process of cleansing and removing impurities, shortcomings and weaknesses.  3. Increase someone in spiritual understanding)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        080:005                                    اَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنۡفَعَهُ الذِّكۡرٰى ؕ‏

                   Auo-yuz-zuk-ka-ro-fa-tun-fa-o-hooz-zik-raa

                 Or heeds so that the attention could benefit him

  • اَوۡ — Auo  — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution)
  • يَذَّ كَّرُ — Yuz-zuk-ka-ro — Heeds (= v., Bears in mind.  Calls to mind.  Comprehends. Gets admonished, forewarned or reminded.  Grasps the meanings.  Pays attention.  Ponders.  Recalls.  Receives admonition.  Recollects.  Reflects.  Remembers.  Takes heed.  Thinks about.  Understands. Undertakes to analyze, celebrate, discuss, dissect, elaborate, extol, extrapolate, grasp, glorify, interpret, join, mention, participate, remember, share, talk, translate, teach or tutor in academic discussions,  community prayer groups, congregational gatherings and similar situations of invocations that follow the famous Hadeeth (quotation of the Holy Prophet, s.a.w) to the effect that Angels invoke prayers for those who sit in the gatherings convened to glorify the name of Allah)
  • فَ — Fa So — that (= Consequently; as a result; so; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • تَنۡفَعَ — Tun-fa-o — Benefit (= Avail; do some good; help, of any use or value; show profit or good results)
  • هُ — Ho..(oz) — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to aforesaid ‘blind man’)
  • الذِّكۡرٰى — Zik-raa — The attention (= Admonishing. Heeding. Helping someone recall and remember things he may have forgotten. Pondering.. Recalling. Reflecting. Refreshing the memory. Remembrance. Remembering. Reminding. Reminder. Thinking about. Warning)

* Note 080:005.   This and the prior verse can be translated together in a simple sentence. Who could tell you that he would cleanse himself (080:004) or pay attention that could benefit him (080:005).   However, different meanings are also assigned in some other translations.
