The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                       090:001 to 012

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. The English equivalent to the Arabic words (shown first, or in Col #1) are provided next, or in Col #3. Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last, or in Col #4.

Chapter # 90                                           Soora-tool-Balad                                          سُوۡرَةَ ٱلۡبَلَدِ

 بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ○ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ○ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ ○ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ○ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ ○ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا ○ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ ○ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ ○ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ ○ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ ○ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ ○ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ ○ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ○ أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمٌ۬ فِى يَوۡمٍ۬ ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬ ○ يَتِيمً۬ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ ○ أَوۡ مِسۡكِينً۬ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍ۬ ○ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ ○ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ○ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ○ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

1. Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem
2. La-aa-ooq-say-mo-bay-haa-zul-ba-lud
3. Wa-un-ta-hil-loon-bay-haa-zul-ba-lud
4. Wa-waa-lay-din-wa-maa-wa-lud
5. La-qud-kha-luq-nul-in-saa-na-fee-ka-bud
6. Aa-yuh-sa-bo-un-lun-yuq-day-ra-alai-hay-aa-hud
7. Ya-quoo-lo-ah-luk-to-maa-lun-la-ba-da
8. Aa-yuh-sa-bo-un-lum-ya-ra-hoo-aa-hud
9. Aa-lum-nuj-ul-la-hoo-ai-nai-nay
10. Wa-le-saa-non-wa-sha-fa-tai-nay
11. Wa-ha-dai-naa-hoon-na-ja-dai-nay
12. Fa-luq-ta-ha-mul-aa-qua-bah
13. Wa-maa-ud-raa-ka-mul-aa-qua-bah
14. Fuk-ko-ra-qua-bah
15. Auo-it-aa-moon-fee-yao-min-zee-mus-gha-bah
16. Ya-tee-mun-zaa-muq-ra-bah
17. Auo-mis-kee-nun-zaa-mut-ra-bah
18. Thoom-ma-kaa-na-me-nul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wa-ta-waa-sao-bis-sub-ray-wa-ta-waa-sao-bil-mur-ha-mah
19. Olaa-eka-us-haa-bool-mai-ma-nah
20. Wul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-bay-aa-yaa-te-naa-hoom-us-haa-bool-mush-aa-mah
21. Alai-him-naa-roon-mo-sa-dah

1. With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.
2. Certainly I swear by this City
3. And you will (= are going to) land in this City.
4. By the father and whom he fathered
5. Most certainly We created man in hardship.
6. Does he think that no one has control over him?
7. He boastfully says, “I squandered wealth in plenty”
8. Does he think that not one can see him?
9. Did We not give him two eyes to see?
10. And one tongue and two lips to speak?
11. And guide him to the two roads to chose the one that was right?
12. But he did not even attempt the Ascent.
13. And who will tell you what the Ascent is?
14. It’s releasing a neck (= freeing a slave)
15. Or feeding in a day of great hunger
16. An orphan of near kin
17. Or an indigent down in dust
18. Thus he was of those who believed, urged the perseverance and urged the kindness
19. These are the people on the right.
20. And those who rejected Our signs are the people on the left
21. Vaulting over them will be Fire

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:001                                      ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin

  • بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
  • سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
  • اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
  • الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
  • الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the endlessly incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:002                                           ○  لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

                La-aa-ooq-say-mo-bay-haa-zul-ba-lud

               Certainly I swear by this City

  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; really; surely; verily)
  • آ — Aa — I (= s., 1st person)
  • أُقۡسِمُ — Ooq-say-mo — Swear (= Take oath; cite as a witness and affirm)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= This word in Arabic literally means with)
  • هَـٰذَا — Haa-za…(ul) — This (= The article, thing or person present before the talker)
  • ٱلۡبَلَدِ — Ba-lud — City (= The ٱلۡ before بَلَدِ particularizes it to Mecca. Generally any area, hamlet, country, region, town or territory)

 * Note 090:002. The first one-lettered word لَ (La) means “Absolutely, certainly, definitely, doubtlessly, earnestly, for sure, indeed, in all earnestness, in all seriousness, really, surely or verily. The second one-lettered word آ (Aa) refers to “One single male or female in 1st person.” Jointly the two-worded phrase means as stated above. Some translators misread the 2-worded لَآ as a one single 2-lettered word  لَا  and so got led to translate it as “need not.”

The Holy Qor-aan                                         090:003                                          ○ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

                 Wa-un-ta-hil-loon-bay-haa-zul-ba-lud

                And you will (= are going to) land in this City.

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • اَنۡتَ — Un-ta — You (= s., m., 2nd person. You single man. The addressee of this divine message is initially the Holy Prophet s.a.w and secondarily every Moslem, in fact every human being. See the Note under 002:005)
  • حِلُّۢ — Hil-loon — Will land * (= Are, destined to be or will become the citizen, dweller, indweller, inhabitant, inmate or resident. Also, one who is a freeman and free from the obligations attached to the strangers in a town in accordance with the law and custom in the medieval ages)
  • بِ — Bay — In / With (= This word in Arabic literally means with, but here ‘in’ is more appropriate for English usage)
  • هَـٰذَا — Haa-za…(ul) — This (= The article, thing or person present before the talker)
  • ٱلۡبَلَدِ — Ba-lud — City (= Refers to Mecca. Area, hamlet, country, region, town or territory)

* Note 090: 003. M Zafrulla Khan translated the word حِلُّ (Hil-loon) as “… you will alight in this city.” Allamah Nooruddin / A R Omar added to the above translation the words “as a Conqueror.” As such it was construed to be a forecast that the Holy Prophet s.a.w. who had been driven out of the city of Muk-kah under threats to life would one day return and land up as its conqueror.

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:004                                                ○  وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَد

                 Wa-waa-lay-din-wa-maa-wa-lud

                By the father and whom he fathered

  • وَ — Wa — And (= The وَ  vaao is tantamount to taking oath; solemn declaration or calling as a witness. Normally a Conj.)
  • وَالِدٍ۬ — Waa-lay–din — Father * (= Begetter; father; parent; who begot or fathered)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Whom (= Whoso; whomever)
  • وَلَدٌ — Wa-lud — Fathered ( = Begot; descendant. Boy. Child. Male off-spring. Son)

* Note 090:004.  The words ‘father and whom he fathered’ have been applied to many scenarios.
—  a. For generations the family of the Holy Prophet s.a.w had been born citizens of Muk-kah. Their fathers were born there. Their sons were born there. The Holy Prophet s.a.w was born there. They all enjoyed the citizenship of and all rights to live in Mecca. That ended with his migration out of Mecca but he was foretold that soon he would return In fact the forecast extends to his future followers as ‘residents or even visitors’ (002:126). It came true in his lifetime. It has repeatedly come true for his followers for centuries.

—  c. The Holy Prophet s.a.w. who had a father, was a human being and was not a ‘Son of God’

The Holy Qor-aan                                         090:005                                 ○  لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ 

                La-qud-kha-luq-nul-in-saa-na-fee-ka-bud

                Most certainly We created man in hardship.

  • لَ — La Certainly * — (= Absolutely; categorically; definitely; doubtlessly; for sure; positively; specifically, surely; truly; verily; without a doubt)
  • قَدۡ — Qud — Certainly * (= Absolutely; categorically; definitely, doubtlessly; for sure; positively, specifically, surely; truly; verily; without a doubt. Both this and the prior word mean very similar. These two words of Emphasis joined together are best translated as ‘Most Certainly’ and not ‘Certainly, Certainly. See ‘2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect’)
  • خَلَقۡ — Kha-luq — Created (= Bent; brought into being; fashioned; formed; produced; shaped)
  • نَآ — Na…(ul) — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Us. Used with God’s name it reflects the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ — In-saa-na — Man (= The human being; mankind; the species known as man including his feminine gender woman)
  • فِىۡ — Fee — In (= 1. Contained inside or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation. 2. Concerning; for the sake of; in reference, relative or pursuant to; regarding)
  • كَبَدٍ — Ka-bud — Hardship (= Committed to toil. Constant struggle. Difficulty. Haste. Hurried activity. Toil. Tough ‘Afflictions’  or ‘atmosphere of affliction’.

* Note 090:005. Other varying verbiages include the following.
o Raised ‘to face obstacles and struggle hard to achieve marvelous goals’ – Allamah Nooruddin.
o The meaning of this word embodies continuously striving harder and harder, in pursuing goals that keep getting higher and higher, with actions that keep growing faster and faster.
o Unending efforts for tangible results that keep getting further and further like chasing a rainbow
o Always in a great hurry to accomplish the lofty goals. A constant struggle.
o Consistent hassle between rise and fall. Continuous battle between good and bad.

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:006                            ○    أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬

                Aa-yuh-sa-bo-un-lun-yuq-day-ra-alai-hay-aa-hud

               Does he think that no one has control over him?

  • اَ — Aa — Does (= Question mark like Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • يَحۡسَبُ — Yuh-sa-bo — He think (= Conjecture; estimate; guess; imagine)
  • أَن — Un — Certainly (= Definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; in all seriousness; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • لَن — Lun — Never (= Absolute denial; no; not; not at all; total negation; by
    no means)
  • يَقۡدِرَ — Yuq-day-ro — Has control (= Dominance; power; rule)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — Over (= Above; against; before; during; for; on top of; to; upon
  • هِ — Hay — Him (= pro., s ., m; 3rd person., Refers to ‘Man”)
  • اَحَدٍ — Aa-hud — One (= Individual; single)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:007                                        ○ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا

                 Ya-quoo-lo-ah-luk-to-maa-lun-la-ba-da

                He boastfully says, “I squandered wealth in plenty”

  • يَقُولُ — Ya-qoo-lo — Says in boast (= v., pr., m, 3rd person. Alleges; announces; asserts; tells; boasts; broadcasts; claims; conveys; declares; states; elaborates; explains; expounds; informs; professes)
  • أَهۡلَكۡتُ — Ah-luk-to — I squandered (= Destroyed; ruined; spent; wasted)
  • مَالاً۬ — Maa-lun — Wealth (= Assets, gains, money, property; richness)
  • لُّبَدًا — La-ba-da — Plenty (= Abundantly; a lot; enormous; greatly; lavishly; vastly; plenteously; vast riches)

                Aa-yuh-sa-bo-un-lum-ya-ra-hoo-aa-hud

               Does he think that no one can see him?

The Holy Qor-aan                                        090:009                                          أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡن

                Aa-lum-nuj-ul-la-hoo-ai-nai-nay

               Did not We give him two eyes to see?

  • لَمۡ — Lum — Not (= Never; no, not at all)

  • هٗ — Hoo — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to ‘Man’)
  • عَيۡنَ — Ai-nai-nay — Two eyes (= A pair of eyes; body parts on face to observe and see. A means to distinguish right from wrong by seeing)

The Holy Qoor-aan                                      090:010                                                وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ

               Wa-le-saa-non-wa-sha-fa-tai-nay

               And one tongue and two lips to speak?

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • لِسَانً۬ا — Le-saa-non — One tongue (= Body part inside mouth to talk and taste)

  • شَفَتَيۡنِ — Sha-fa-tai-nay — Two lips (= A pair of lips; body parts that open and close the mouth. A means to get info about right and wrong by speaking

The Holy Qor-aan                                         090:011                                               ○  وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

                Wa-ha-dai-naa-hoon-na-ja-dai-nay

                And We guided him to the two roads to chose the one that was right?

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • هَدَيۡ — Ha-dai — Guided (= Pointed out. Showed the linear lines or right road; put on proper path)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Used with God’s name it reflects the authoritative way a higher-up talks to a subordinate)
  • هُ — Ho…(on) — Him (= pro, s., m; 3rd person., Refers to ‘Man”)
  • ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ — Na-ja-dai-nay — Two roads (= Highway of good and bad running parallel; lines; paths. One road that parts two mountains. Mountainous road.
    Points to the two conspicuous heights of right and wrong)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         090:012                                                ○ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ

                  Fa-luq-ta-ha-mul-aa-qua-bah

                 But he did not even attempt the Ascent.

  • فَ — Fa — But (= Consequently; hence; resultantly; so; then; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • لَّا — La..(uq) — Not (= Absolute denial; never; not at all; total negation)
  • ٱقۡتَحَمَ — Uq-ta-ha-ma…(ul) — Attempted (= Made no haste, scale or try)
  • ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ — Ul-aa-qua-bah — The Ascent (= Height; hard task of walking up the steep uphill path; scaling of the heights)
