The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                 103:001 to 004

Verses of the Holy Qor-aan are quoted on this site with the numbers, the first set of three being the number of Soorah (Chapter) followed by the last set of three being the number of the verse. The numbers include بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏ as the verse #1 in every Soorah except the Soorah #9. The original Arabic word is shown first, or in Col #1. The phonetic transliteration in English is shown next, or in Col #2, and is based upon words commonly pronounced like bat, cat, sat → fate, gate, hate → bait, trait → bay, nay, say → be, he, she → bet, pet, wet → bit, fit, sit → cot, dot, rot → boot, hoot, root → bout, rout → but, cut, hut, ultimatum. The English equivalent to the Arabic words (shown first, or in Col #1) are provided next, or in Col #3. Some other alternates in English used in other translations are given last, or in Col #4.

Chapter # 103                                         Soora-tol-Usray                                    سُوۡرَةُ العَصر

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ

وَالۡعَصۡرِۙ‏ ○ اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ لَفِىۡ خُسۡرٍۙ‏ ○ اِلَّا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالۡحَقِّ ۙ وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ

1. Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem
2. Wul-us-ray
3. In-nul-in-saa-na-la-fee-khoos-rin
4. Il-lul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-me-loos-suaa-le-haa-tay–wa-ta-waa-sao-bil-huq-quay–wa-ta-waa-sao-bis-sub-r

3. Most certainly Man is in a state of continuing loss

The Holy Qor-aan                                         103: 001                                         ○بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ‏‏

Bis-mil-laa-hir-rah-maa-nir-ra-heem

With the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful I begin.

(Beginning, commencing, starting)

• بِ — B…(is) — With (= This Arabic word literally means ‘with’. Its translation in English is more accurate with ‘with’ than with ‘in’)
• سۡمِ — Ism…(il) — The name of (= The way to be addressed or called)
• اللهِ — Laa-h…(ir) — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)
• الرَّحۡمٰنِ — Rah-maa-n.(ir) — The Most Beneficent (= The One who fully, totally and wholly benefits all, to the maximum, with no condition, limitation or restriction. Compassionate. Gracious)
• الرَّحِيۡمِ — Ra-heem — The Most Merciful (= The One who fully, totally and wholly showers mercy, to the maximum, again and again, continually, indefinitely and perpetually like the incoming waves from the oceans)

The Holy Qor-aan                                        103 : 002                                                      وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ

Wul-us-ray

(Sworn  as an absolute certainty) By The Time that is passing by swiftly

• وَ          Wa…(l)           Sworn By         (= This وَ vaao is like taking an oath; solemn declaration; Call for someone or something to come forward, testify and vouch as a witness)
• ٱلۡعَصۡرِ    Us-ray            The Time          (= Any day, hour or longer period that is passing by swiftly; declining day; era; evolutionary period; fleeting time; Time through the ages)

The Holy Qor-aan                                         103: 003                                              إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ

In-nul-in-saa-na-la-fee-khoos-rin

Most certainly  Man is in a sure state of continuing loss.

• ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ   In-saa-na         Man                   (= The human being; mankind; the species known as man including his feminine gender woman)
• لَ          La                     Surely                 (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; truly; verily) *
• فِىۡ         Fee                    In                       (= Contained inside or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation)
• خُسۡرٍ      Khoos-rin        State of loss      (= A continuing state of loss; losing proposition; perdition)

* Note 103:003. Two Arabic words اِنَّ and لَ have very similar meanings. They are used in the same one clause or sentence to create extreme emphasis. The English equivalents for both the words are almost the same. Instead of using the same word twice (‘certainly’, certainly’) in the translation of the same one verse, a more appropriate expression ‘most certainly’ has been used because that conveys the real intent of the original text clearly better. Extreme emphasis has been created this way in many places in the Holy Qor-aan.                 إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ

                Il-lul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-me-loos-suaa-le-haa-tay-wa-ta-waa-sao-bil-huq-quay-wa-ta-waa-sao-bis-sub-r

               Except those who believed and did good deeds and exhorted each other to pursue with truthfulness and exhorted each other to pursue with persistence.

* Note 103:004. The words ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ and مَرۡحَمَةِ are used in verses 090:018. The words اِلَّا and وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ and حَقِّ are used in verse 103:004. Except for these words, the remaining words have been set in almost identical constructions and convey pretty close messages.
