Ho-wal-la-zee-un-za-la-alai-kul-kay-taa-ba                                                                                 Min-ho-aa-yaa-toon-moh-ka-maa-toon                                                                                        Hoon-na-oom-mool-kay-taa-bay                                                                                                  Wa-o-kha-ro-mo-ta-shaa-bay-haat

Wur-raa-say-khoo-na-fil-il-may-ya-qoo-loo-na                                                                             Aa-mun-naa-bay-he-kool-loon-min-in-day-rub-bay-naa                                                            Wa-maa-yuz-zuk-ka-ro-il-laa-o-lool-ul-baab.

He is the One Who entrusted to you the Book.                                                               From it you get the Signs firm and clear.                                                                  They are the mother of the Book                                                                                             And others congruent (susceptible to interpretation).

So as regards those in whose hearts is a perversity                                                        They follow what looked like something else from it                                                   Seeking mischief and seeking its interpretation.                                                          But none knows its interpretation except Allah.

And those deeply rooted in knowledge say,                                                                        “We have believed in this. All is from our God.”                                                               And none reflects except those with the understanding.

* Note 003:008. This ‘punctuation mark’ dictates that the reader must pause here so that the meanings are “None knows its interpretation except Allah.  And the deeply-rooted in knowledge say …”  Dr Al-Hilali and Dr Khan among others have correctly translated this verse this way.

But by not pausing at this punctuation mark and continuing to link the prior clause with the later clause as a single sentence produces drastically different meanings, to wit., “But none knows its interpretation except Allah and the deeply-rooted in knowledge who say, “Our Lord …”  Such translations present meanings which are not proper for the following reasons.

  • Such meanings would convey as if the ‘scholars deeply-rooted in knowledge’ were set up to be the equals of Allah – something no Moslem in his right mind would ever imagine to proclaim, profess or practice.
  • Such meanings necessitate using the word who between the deeply-rooted in knowledge and ‘who say.’ Let us be very clear about this point.

— Without the aforesaid who, the text would say “But none knows its interpretation except Allah. And the deeply-rooted in knowledge say, “Our Lord …”

— With the aforesaid who, the text would say “But none knows its interpretation except Allah and the deeply-rooted in knowledge who say, “Our Lord….”

— The use of ‘who’ is the tell-tale key that manifestly shows that the two independent clauses are different, distinct and separate. It is not proper to construe and construct them as one continuing sentence.
