The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                        007:005

 

وَكَمۡ مِّنۡ قَرۡيَةٍ اَهۡلَـكۡنٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَاۡسُنَا بَيَاتًا اَوۡ هُمۡ قَآٮِٕلُوۡنَ

 

Wa  kum  min  qur-ya-tin  ah-luk  naa  haa                                                                                      Fa  jaa  aa  haa  bau-so  naa  ba-yaa-ton  auo  hoom  qaa-aiy-loo-n

 

And how many from a village were that We destroyed them                                      Since Our wrath befell them sleeping at night or napping in daytime.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • كَمۡ — Kum — How many (= What number do we have. A/t/a, ‘How many,’ ‘so many’ and ‘great number’)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon. A/t/a, ‘of’)
  • قَرۡيَةٍ — Qur-ya-tin — A village (= City; colony; hamlet; habitat; population center; town;  township. Where Man had lived, prospered or resided. A/t/a, ‘towns,’ ‘towns (their population),’ ‘a town,’ ‘a township,’ ‘a (rebellious)’ and ‘cities’)
  • اَهۡلَـكۡ — Ah-luk — Destroyed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Annihilated. Brought them death. Caused death. Killed. Made them pass away. A/t/a, ‘destroyed,’ ‘destroyed (for  their sins,’ ‘have We destroyed,’ ‘have We destroyed (for their sins),’ ‘have … caused to be ruined’ and ‘laid in ruin’)
  • نَآ —  Naa —  We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. Used with God’s name this plural is the authoritative way a higher-up talks)
  • هَا — Haa — Them (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid villagers)
  • فَ — Fa —  Since (= Consequently; so; thereafter; therefore; then; thus; yet)
  • جَآءَ — Jaa-aa — Befell / Came (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Arrived; came; reached; returned. Also, for different contexts, See 002:276.  A/t/a, ‘took them on a sudden,’ ‘came to,’ ‘came upon,’ ‘raid,’ ‘visited’ and ‘fell upon’)
  • هَا — Haa — It (= pro., s., f., 3rd person., Refers to aforesaid group in the village or township. A/t/a, ‘it’ and ‘them’)
  • بَاۡسُ — Bau-so — Wrath (= n., Extreme anger. See 006:148. A/t/a, ‘punishment,’ ‘terror,’ ‘scourge’ and ‘torment’)
  • نَآ —  Naa — Our (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us. See  نَآ above)
  • بَيَاتًا — Ba-yaa-ton — Sleeping at night (= adj., Dowdiness. Drabness. Homeliness. Plainness; In the state of being at home, comfortable, enjoying night life and having no fear or worry. A/t/a, ‘by night,’ ‘(suddenly) by night,’ ‘at night’ and ‘in the night’)
  • اَوۡ — Auo — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution. A/t/a, ‘or while’ and ‘while’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • قَآٮِٕلُوۡنَ — Qua-aiy-loo-na — Napping (= n., pl. Those people who were having an afternoon nap which is a sign of comfortable care-free living enjoyed by the rich people. A/t/a, ‘they slept for their afternoon rest,’ ‘they slept at midday,’ ‘they slept at noon,’ ’they were taking their midday rest,’ ‘they were taking their midday nap,’ ‘took rest at noontime’  and ‘at midday, when they were drowsing’)
