ثُمَّ اَنۡـتُمۡ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ تَقۡتُلُوۡنَ اَنۡفُسَكُمۡ وَتُخۡرِجُوۡنَ فَرِيۡقًا مِّنۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ دِيَارِهِمۡؕ تَظٰهَرُوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ بِالۡاِثۡمِ وَالۡعُدۡوَانِؕ وَاِنۡ يَّاۡتُوۡكُمۡ اُسٰرٰى تُفٰدُوۡهُمۡ وَهُوَ مُحَرَّمٌ عَلَيۡڪُمۡ اِخۡرَاجُهُمۡ‌‌ؕ اَفَتُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِبَعۡضِ الۡكِتٰبِ وَتَكۡفُرُوۡنَ بِبَعۡضٍ‌ۚ فَمَا جَزَآءُ مَنۡ يَّفۡعَلُ ذٰلِكَ مِنۡکُمۡ اِلَّا خِزۡىٌ فِى الۡحَيٰوةِ الدُّنۡيَا ‌ۚ وَيَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ يُرَدُّوۡنَ اِلٰٓى اَشَدِّ الۡعَذَابِ‌ؕ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Thoom-ma-un-toom-haa-olaa-aiy-tuq-to-loo-na-un-fo-sa-koom
Wa-tookh-ray-joo-na-fa-ree-qum-min-koom-min-day-yaa-ray-him
Ta-zaa-ha-roo-na-alai-him-bil-ith-may-wul-ood-waan
Wa-in-yau-too-koom-osa-raa-to-faa-do-hoom
Wa-ho-wa-mo-hur-ra-moon-alai-koom-ikh-raa-jo-hoom
Aa-fa-tou-may-noo-na-bay-bau-dzil-kay-taa-bay
Wa-tuk-fo-roo-na-bay-bau-dzin
Fa-maa-ja-zaa-o-mun-yuf-aa-lo-zaa-lay-ka-min-koom
Il-laa-khiz-yoon-fil-ha-yaa-tid-doon-yaa
Wa-yao-mul-qay-yaa-ma-tay-yo-rud-doo-na-elaa-aa-shud-dil-azaa-bay
Wa-mul-laa-ho-bay-ghaa-fay-lin-um-maa-tau-ma-loo-n.

 

Then you were the very people killing some of yourselves
And expelling a group among you from their homes
Overpowering* them with sin and aggression.
And if they come to you as captives you pay for them
And expelling them was unlawful for you in the first place.
Do you then believe in one part of the Book
And you reject some other?
So what (or no) penalty is there for anyone among you
Who does that except humiliation in the life here
And on Judgment Day they will be turned over to severe punishment.
And Allah is not unmindful relative to what you do.

 

  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; subsequently; thereafter; yet; at the end of; in conclusion)
  • اَنَّ — Un — Absolutely (= Certainly; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; in all seriousness; positively; really; surely; truly; verily)
  • تُمۡ — Toom  — You (= pl.,  m., 2nd person. You. The reference is to the بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ. The Holy Qor-aan and other scriptures state that way when they address both men and women
  • هٰٓؤُلَآءِ — Haa-o-laa-aiy –Very people (=All of them; all those; in spite of all this. There you were. The same. Refers to earlier shown, stated or specified things or persons right there in immediate presence, in instant case ‘Violators of the of the Covenant’)
  • تَقۡتُلُوۡنَ — Tuq-to-loona — Killing (= v., Persecuting. Oppressing. Suppressing. Destroying. Engaged in battle, combat or war. Commit carnage, massacre, mayhem, murder, slaughter or slaying. See Commentary titled as Jihad, Is it Fighting)
  • اَنۡفُسَ — Un-fo-sa Selves — (= pl., Brethren, folks, kinsman or people. Group of hearts, individuals, minds, persons and souls. Countrymen, fellows, followers, individuals, nation or tribes)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl.,  m., 2nd person. You. The reference is to the بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ. The Holy Qor-aan and other scriptures state that way when they address both men and women  
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • تُخۡرِجُوۡنَ — Tookh-ray-joo-na — Expelling (= Banishing; deporting; driving away; driving out; imposing transportation for life; sending in exile; throwing out; turning out)
  • فَرِيۡقًا — Faree-qun…(m) — A group (= Band; class; clique; company; division; faction; party; section; selection; some associates; part of a whole lot)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — Among (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl.,  m., 2nd person. You. Israelites بَنِىۡٓ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ.  See  كُمۡ  above)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • دِيَارِ — Day-yaa-ray — Homes (= pl., Dwellings. Habitats. Hamlets; Houses; Lodgings. Residences. Also cities and villages, area and territory)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the group expelled)
  • تَظٰهَرُوۡنَ — Ta-zaa-ha-roo-na — Overpowering (= Aiding, abetting, assisting, backing, committing excess or supporting and inciting one group against another in broad-day light [openly getting an upper hand, overpowering, overcoming, overshadowing, prevailing upon and transgressing] or in hiding [by conspiring and cooperating secretly, surreptitiously and under-handedly] See also 060:010)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; for; on top of; over; upon)
  • هِمۡ — Him  — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the group expelled)
  • بِ — B..(il) — With (= This word in Arabic literally means ‘with’)
  • الۡاِثۡمِ َ– Ith-may — Sin (= Crime; infraction; wrong; illegality; unlawful conduct)
  • وَ — Wa…(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • الۡعُدۡوَانِ — Ood-waan — Aggression (= Crossing the line; enmity; exceeding the limits; excess; going overboard; injustice; transgression; unfairness)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under the circumstances; when situation arises)
  • يَّاۡتُو — Yau-too — Come (= Arrive; are brought; delivered; get delivered; produced; reach; received; shown)

  • اُسٰرٰى — Osaa-raa — Captives (= Confined; enslaved; prisoners; incarcerated)
  • تُفٰدُو — To-faa-doo — You pay (= Pay compensation, equivalent, ransom or retribution. Ransomed. Also, deemed it meritorious to ransom)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the group expelled)
  • وَ — Wa — But (= Conj., And; though; when; while; yet. Also see وَ  above)
  • هُوَ — Ho-wa — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the act of expulsion)
  • مُحَرَّمٌ — Mo-hurra-moon — Unlawful (= Forbidden; illegal; impermissible; mandated to be avoided; prohibited; proscribed)
  • عَلَيۡ — Alai — For (= Above; against; before; on; on top of; over; upon)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl.,  m., 2nd person. You. Israelites. See كُمۡ above))
  • اِخۡرَاجُ — Ikh-raa-jo — Expelling (= Banishing; deporting; sending in exile; throwing or turning out)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Refers to the group expelled)
  • اَ — Aa — Do (= Question mark like Are, Can, Have, Shell or Will?)
  • فَ — Fa — Then (= Consequently; as a result; so; thereafter; therefore; yet)
  • تُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ — Tou-may-noo-na — You believe (= v., Accept; act and practice upon; acknowledge; give credit and credibility; have faith in; trust)
  • بِ — Bay — In / with (= This word in Arabic literally means with.    Here ‘in’ is better to convey the meanings of the original text)
  • بَعۡضِ — Bau-dz…(il) — One part (= A few. Fraction, part, piece, portion or the rest. Some)
  • الۡكِتٰبِ — Kay-taa-bay — The Book (= 1. Code; Direction; Divine Command / Regulations; Holy Direction; Script. Scripture; Spiritual Code.  2. Decreed parts of a religion. Mandated; ordered; penned down; prescribed; preserved; recorded; written down; written record of do’s and don’ts.  3. Testament that holds good and operative eternally.  4. Authentic written material in black & white)

  • تَكۡفُرُوۡنَ — Tuk-fo-roo-na — Reject (= Deny; disbelieve; discard; disown; disregard; dispute; disrespect; reject)

  • مِنۡ — Min — Among (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of)
  • کُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m. 2nd person. You. Israelites. See كُمۡ above)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; besides; excluding; save; unless)
  • خِزۡىٌ — Khiz-yoon — Humiliation (= Defamation; disgrace; dishonoring; ignominy; insult)
  • فِىۡ — Fee…(il) — In (= 1. Contained in or amidst a duration, event, time, place, period, thing or situation; inside 2. Concerning; for the sake of; in reference, relative or pursuant to; regarding)
  • لۡحَيٰوةِ — Ha-yaa-t(id) — Life (= The quality shown by functions among others of growth and response to stimulation and reproduction by which living organisms are distinguished from dead organisms and inanimate matter)
  • ٱلدُّنۡيا — Doon-yaa — Here (= 1. Life on earth; near life; nearby world; world at hand; this world. 2. Close at hand; the present; the short-term; the near one. 3. The opposite of the life Hereafter)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • يَوۡم — Yao-m…(ul) — Day (= n., s., Juncture; period, term or time that ends)
  • الۡقِيٰمَةِ‌ — Qay-yaa-ma-tay — Judgment (= Reckoning; Resurrection; Ultimate settlement)
  • يُرَدُّوۡنَ — Yo-rud-doo-na — Sent to (= Consigned; driven to; given over; reverted; returned; sent back; turned over)
  • اِلٰٓى — Elaa — To / For (= In the direction; for the purpose; towards; with intent)
  • اَشَدِّ — Aa-shud-dil — Severe (= Most grievous; more; much severe; real strong; worst possible)
  • الۡعَذَابِ — Azaa-bay — Punishment (= Chastisement; doom; hard task; penalty; torment; torture; scourge)

The Phrase Wa-mul-laa-ho-bay-ghaa … is used frequently. See Note 002:075b.

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • مَا — Ma…(ul) — Not (= No; not; not at all; never)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= This word in Arabic literally means ‘with’)
  • غَافِلٍ — Ghaa-fay-lin — Unmindful (= Forgetful. Heedless; Ignorant. Unaware)
  • عَمَّا — Um-ma — Relative to what (= This is a combination of two words. The first word عَنۡ (un) means about, concerning, regarding, relative to. The second word مَاۤ (maa) means all that or what. عَمَّا means about, concerning, regarding that or what. A/t/a, ‘what,’ ‘that which,’ ‘all the things,’ ‘that’ and ‘all that (evil)’
  • تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ — Tau-ma-loo-na — You do (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act; activate; attempt; carry out; effect; exercise; execute; function; go; make out; implement; operate; perform; practice; render; serve; run-through; work-out. See Note 002:075b)

 

* Note 002:086. The words تَظٰهَرُوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ mean the following.
1. Backing up one another against your own, or the enemy.
2. Committing excess and conspiring by aiding, abetting, assisting & supporting [the enemy against your own folks.
3. Getting the upper hand, overcoming, prevailing on or transgressing against your own.

However, those words have been translated quite differently as shown below. Several Translators have applied those actions a) to some Israelites, or b) to one group of Israelites against others, or c) to some Israelites against the enemy, or d) to the enemy against the fellow Israelites.

“Assist {Their enemies} against them in guilt and rancour” – A. Yusuf Ali

“Assist their (enemies) against them, in sin and aggression.” Dr Hilali and Dr Khan

“Backing up their enemies against them, committing sin and transgression.” Muhammad Zafrulla Khan

“Backing up one another against them sinfully and transgressingly.” Allamah Nooruddin

“Backing up one another against them with sin and transgression.” Maulawi Sher Ali

“Conspiring against them in sin and enmity.” Ahmed Zidan

“Helping others against them with sin and enmity in your hearts.” N J Dawood
