** Note 003:158. The words  قُتِلۡتُمۡ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ اَوۡ مُتُّمۡ  have been translated in several ways. Their accurate, most logical, simple and straightforward translation is as given above. The same words in the next verse 003:159 further substantiate such translation.

The phrase فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ [= in the cause of Allah]  covers both verbs قُتِلۡتُمۡ  and  مُتُّم . The first verb includes the process of attacking; battling, fighting or even engaging in persecution when the process does not culminate in an actual loss of life. The second verb clearly shows death.

The next verse has also both these verbs but in a reverse order. The first verb reflects the loss of life or being a martyr. The second verb indicates that the reward of being with Allah is not lost even if the devout has not lost life.
