وَاتۡلُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَبَاَ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ‌ۘ‏

Wut-lo-alai-him-na-ba-aa-ib-raa-he-ma 

Read them the story of Abraham.

اِذۡ قَالَ لِاَبِيۡهِ وَقَوۡمِهٖ مَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ‏

Iz-qaa-la-lay-aa-be-hay-wa-qao-may-he-maa-tau-bo-do-n 

When he said to his father and his people, “What is that you worship?” 

  • اِذۡ — Iz — When (= At the time or event; call to mind; recall; remember; think of the time, event, occasion or opportunity. Also,  behold; consider; ponder over; reflect)
  • قَا لَ — Qaa-la — He said (= v., past, s., m., 3rd person. Announced; called; conveyed;  declared; informed; specified; told. A/t/a, ‘he asked’)
  • لِ — Lay — To (= For the person, purpose or reason of; intended or meant for; concerning; relative to. A/t/a, ‘unto’)
  • أَبِى — Abee — Father (= n., Master; owner; person with power over. A/t/a, ‘sire’)
  • هِ — Hay — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to Prophet Abraham)

قَالُوۡا نَـعۡبُدُ اَصۡنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عٰكِفِيۡنَ

Qaa-loo-nau-bo-do-us-naa-mun-fa-na-zool-lo-aa-kay-fee-n 

They said, “We worship statutes. Therefore, we remain devotees for them.”

  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo  — They said (= v., past, pl., m., 3rdperson: All those men announced;       called; declared; told. See Notes 112:002 and our Commentary ‘You say’ means …’ A/t/a, ‘replied’ and ‘said they’)

وَذَرِ الَّذِيۡنَ اتَّخَذُوۡا دِيۡنَهُمۡ لَعِبًا وَّلَهۡوًا وَّغَرَّتۡهُمُ الۡحَيٰوةُ الدُّنۡيَا‌ وَ ذَكِّرۡ بِهٖۤ اَنۡ تُبۡسَلَ نَفۡسٌ ۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ‌ۖ   لَـيۡسَ لَهَا مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ وَلِىٌّ وَّلَا شَفِيۡعٌ‌ ۚ  وَاِنۡ تَعۡدِلۡ كُلَّ عَدۡلٍ لَّا يُؤۡخَذۡ مِنۡهَا‌ ؕ  اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ الَّذِيۡنَ اُبۡسِلُوۡا بِمَا كَسَبُوۡا‌ ۚ   لَهُمۡ شَرَابٌ مِّنۡ حَمِيۡمٍ وَّعَذَابٌ اَ لِيۡمٌۢ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَكۡفُرُوۡنَ ‏

 

Wa-za-ril-la-zee-nut-ta-kha-zoo-dee-na-hoom-la-aiy-bun-wa-luh-wun                                  Wa-ghur-rut-ho-mool-ha-yaa-tood-doon-yaa                                                                              Wa-zuk-kir-bay-he-un-toob-sul-nuf-soon-bay-maa-ka-sa-but

Lai-sa-la-haa-min-do-nil-laa-hay-wa-lee-yoon-wa-laa-sha-fee-oon                                        Wa-in-tau-dil-koo-la-ud-lin-laa-yoe-kha-zo-min-haa                                                                  O-laa-e-kul-la-zee-nub-say-loo-bay-maa-ka-sa-boo                                                                  La-hoom-sha-raa-boon-min-ha-me-min-wa                                                                                Azaa-boon-alee-moon-bay-maa-kaa-noo-yuk-fo-roo-n

 

And you leave those who took their religion as a sport and pastime,                      And whom the present life had beguiled,                                                                    And with it you remind them lest a soul is crushed for what it earned.

For it none besides Allah is a real friend or intercessor.                                               And if offered every compensation, it won’t be taken from it.                                These are those who were crushed because of what they earned.                            For them is a drink of boiling water and                                                                            A painful punishment because they used to disbelieve.

  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — Because (= Combination of two words. بِ  means ‘with / in’ and  مَاۤ   means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’  The combination  بِمَا  (bay-maa) means ‘because of; on account of; for the reason; due to; with / in all that. A/t/a, ‘by,’ ‘for,’  ‘for what’ and ‘for that which’)
  • كَسَبَتۡ — Ka-sa-but — It earned (= v., past., s., f., 3rd person. Accomplished; accumulated;  achieved; acquired; bagged; brought about; completed; deserved; due; gained; garnered, gathered; harvested; incurred; merited; performed, received, won; resolved, secured, succeeded; won. A/t/a, ‘it has earned’ and ‘it has wrought.’  But the nouns in ‘its own acts,’ ‘its misdeeds’ and ‘their own sins’ are  no translations of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in a verb in the past tense. Also, the masculine gender pronoun ‘he’ given in ‘he has earned’ [by Dr M Muhsin Khan and Dr Taqi-ud-Din Al-hilali] is no translation of the feminine gender of this and the earlier word نَفۡسِ  which the Holy Qor-aan has used)

Who become disbelievers, heretics, infidels, thankless, unappreciative or unbelievers. A/t/a, ‘In rejecting God,’ ‘unbelief’ and ‘to disbelieve.’ However, ‘they disbelieved’ in the past tense is no translation of the present tense used in the Holy Qor-aan)

وَمَا عَلَى الَّذِيۡنَ يَتَّقُوۡنَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِمۡ مِّنۡ شَىۡءٍ وَّلٰـكِنۡ ذِكۡرٰى لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُوۡنَ

 

Wa-maa-alul-la-zee-na-yut-ta-qoo-na                                                                                              Min-hay-saa-bay-hoom-min-shai-in                                                                                               Wa-laa-kin-zik-raa-la-ul-la-hoom-yut-ta-doo-n

 

And no blame is on those who are being pious                                                              For anything at all on their account.                                                                                      But in it is a reminder that they practice piety.

See Commentary The Righteous and 002:005 for other differently worded meanings. A/t/a, ‘keep their duty,’ ‘guard against evil,’ ‘ward off evil’ and ‘fear Allah, keep their duty to Him and avoid evil.’ But ‘the righteous’ or ‘the pious’ are nouns and no translation of the verb that the Holy Qor-aan has used)

Bringing or calling to account. A/t/a, ‘accountable’ and ‘responsible’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Their (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; theirs. This pronoun refers to those who   practice piety as shown in translation “Those that fear are not by any means accountable for them.” But some authors construed as if it meant ‘these (evil doers)’ and ‘them (the disbelievers)’     
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See  مِنۡ  above)
  • شَىۡءٍ — Shai-in — At all (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit.  Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object,  material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To the least extent. Also, Some, something or somewhat. وَاِذَا رَاَيۡتَ الَّذِيۡنَ يَخُوۡضُوۡنَ فِىۡۤ اٰيٰتِنَا فَاَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتّٰى يَخُوۡضُوۡا فِىۡ حَدِيۡثٍ غَيۡرِهٖ‌ ؕ وَاِمَّا يُنۡسِيَنَّكَ الشَّيۡطٰنُ فَلَا تَقۡعُدۡ بَعۡدَ الذِّكۡرٰى مَعَ الۡقَوۡمِ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ

Wa-ezaa-ra-aye-tul-la-ze-na                                                                                                              Ya-khoo-dzoo-na-fee-aa-yaa-tay-na                                                                                                  Fa-au-ridz-un-hoom-hut-taa                                                                                                              Ya-khoo-dzoo-fee-ha-de-thin-ghai-ray-he

Wa-im-maa-yun-say-yun-na-kaush-shai-taa-no                                                                          Fa-laa-tuq-ood-bau-duz-zik-raa                                                                                                          Ma-ul-qao-miz-zaa-lay-mee-n

 

And when you have seen those people who                                                                        Engage in talking vain regarding our Signs,                                                                  Then you turn away until                                                                                                      They engage in a talk other than that.

And in case the Satan makes you forget                                                                            Then do not sit there after recollection                                                                                With the people who are wrongdoers.

لِّـكُلِّ نَبَاٍ مُّسۡتَقَرٌّ‌ وَّسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ

Lay-kool-lay-na-ba-in-moos-ta-qur-roon-wa-sao-fa-tau-la-moo-n 

 

For every news is a place to rest. And soon you too will know.

وَكَذَّبَ بِهٖ قَوۡمُكَ وَهُوَ الۡحَـقُّ‌ ؕ قُلْ لَّسۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ بِوَكِيۡلٍؕ

 

Wa-kuz-za-ba-bay-he-qao-mo-ka-wa-ho-wul-huq                                                                        Qool-lus-to-alai-koom-bay-wa-kee-l

 

Your people treated this as a lie and it is the Truth.                                                        Say, “I am not with the Watch over you.”

Qool-ho-wul-qaa-day-ro-alaa-un-yub-aa-tha-alai-koom                                                    Azaa-bun-min-fao-qay-koom-auo-min-tah-tay-ur-jo-lay-koom                                                Auo-yul-bay-sa-koom-sha-ya-un                                                                                                        Wa-yo-ze-qa-bau-dzo-koom-bau-sa-bau-dzin                                                                                Oon-zoor-kai-fa-no-sur-ray-fo-aa-yaa-tay-la-ul-la-hoom-yuf-qa-hoo-n

 

Say He is the controller Who can send upon you                                                            A punishment from above you or from below your feet,                                            Or clothe you into a conflicting sect,                                                                                  And feed some of you the wrath of some others.                                                              Look at how We display the Signs so that they understand.

Qo-lil-laa-ho-yo-nuj-jee-koom-min-haa-wa-min                                                                            Kool-lay-kur-bin-thoom-ma-un-toom-toosh-ray-koo-n

 

Say Allah rescues you from this and from                                                                          Every disaster, and then you associate partners with Him.

  • كُلِّ — Kool-lay — Every (= All; all and everyone, time or place; entirely; wholly. A/t/a, ‘every,’ every other,’ ‘all other’ and ‘all’)
  • كَرۡبٍ — Kur-bin — Disaster (= n., s., Difficulty; pain; situation; trouble. A/t/a, ‘affliction,’ ‘distress,’ ‘calamity,’ ‘distresses’ and ‘afflictions’)
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; further more; subsequently; thereafter. A/t/a,  ‘yet’ and ‘still’)
  • اَنۡـتُمۡ — Un-toom — Surely you (= pro., pl., 2nd person. This is a combination of اِنۡ (Un)   that means absolutely, clearly, really, surely, truly or verily and تُمۡ (toom) that is for the pronoun you. A/t/a, ‘Ye’)
  • تُشۡرِكُوۡنَ — Toosh-ray-koo-na — You associate (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. You appoint, ascribe, associate or set up equals or partners to the Almighty God. You worship imaginary gods or anything beside the Almighty God. You become idolater, Polytheist or an Unbelieving pagan. A/t/a, ‘you set up others (with Him),’ ‘you associate partners (with Him),’ ‘you associate partners with him,’ ‘attribute partners unto Him,’ ‘you worship idols,’ ‘Ye worship false gods’ and ‘you worship others besides Allah’)

قُلۡ مَنۡ يُّنَجِّيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ ظُلُمٰتِ الۡبَرِّ وَالۡبَحۡرِ تَدۡعُوۡنَهٗ تَضَرُّعًا وَّخُفۡيَةً ۚ  لَٮِٕنۡ اَنۡجٰٮنَا مِنۡ هٰذِهٖ لَـنَكُوۡنَنَّ مِنَ الشّٰكِرِيۡنَ

 

Qool-mun-yo-nuj-jee-koom-min-zo-lo-maa-til-bur-ray-wul-bah-ray                                      Tud-oo-na-hoo-ta-zar-ro-un-wa-khoof-ya-ton                                                                                La-in-un-jaa-naa-min-haa-zay-he                                                                                                  La-na-koo-nun-na-may-naush-shaa-kay-ree-n

 

You say, “Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and water                      If you pray to Him abjectly and secretly?                                                                          They say, Most certainly if He rescues us from this.                                                We will become among the Grateful.”

 

  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s., 2nd person. Announce; command; convey; explain; inform; state; preach; proclaim; profess; teach; tell. See Commentary “ “You say’ means ….’’ & 006:058. A/t/a, ‘Say (O Muhammad s.a.w’ and ‘Ask them’)
  • مَنۡ — Mun — Who (= Anyone; whoever; whom; whomever; whoso. A/t/a, ‘Who,’ ‘Who is it’ and Who is that’)
  • يُّنَجِّيۡ — Yo-nuj-jee — Rescues (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Recovers; saves. A/t/a, ‘delivereth’ and ‘delivers’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • مِّنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • ظُلُمٰتِ — Zolo-maa-t(il) — Darkness (= n., pl. Layer upon layer of darkness; abysmal darkness; all and every kind of darkness; deep darkness; depth of darkness; different shades of darkness; pitch dark; many zones of thick, total and utter darkness. A/t/a,  ‘calamities,’ ‘horrors,’ ‘perils,’ ‘perils in the darkness’ and ‘dark recesses’)
  • الۡبَرِّ — Bur-ray — The land (= n., Ground. Dry earth or land)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; over; though; when; while; yet)
  • الۡبَحۡرِ — Bah-ray — The sea (= n., Watery parts of earth like oceans, lakes and rivers.  A/t/a, ‘ ‘sea (dangers like storms)’
  • تَدۡعُوۡنَ — Tud-oo-na — You pray (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Call for help; pray; seek help. A/t/a, ‘(when) you call upon,’ ‘when you call upon,’ ‘you call upon,’ ‘ye call  upon’ and ‘you call out to’)
  • هٗ —  Hoo — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • تَضَرُّعًا — Ta-zar-ro-un — Abjectly (= adv., Abjectly, humbly or seriously praying; beseeching; requesting. A/t/a, ‘in humility’ and ‘humbly’)
  • وَّ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • خُفۡيَةً — Khoof-ya-ton — Secretly (= adv., In a hidden fashion. Inwardly, surreptitiously. A/t/a, ‘in secret,’ ‘open supplication’ and ‘silent terror’)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; sincerely; specifically; surely; verily)
  • اِنۡ — In — If (= In case; under circumstances)
  • اَنۡجٰ — Un-jaa — Rescued (= v., past., s.,3rd person. Saved. A/t/a, ‘He deliver,’ ‘He delivers,’ were delivered,’ ‘are saved,’ ‘saying: “Save us” and ‘He (Allah) only saves us’)
  • نَآ — Naa — Us (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; Us)
  • مِنۡ  — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See مِّنۡ  above)
  • هٰذِهِ — Ha-zay-he — This (= This particularly pointed out; present right here; what is in front of you. A/t/a, ‘this (hardship),’ ‘this (fear),’  ‘this affliction’ and ‘this (danger)’
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; definitely; earnestly. See لَ above. Using لَ with same meanings twice in the clause warrants adding the ‘most’ in its translation. A/t/a, ‘truly’)
  • نَكُوۡنَنَّ — Na-koo-nun-na — We become (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Convert; turn into. A/t/a, ‘we … be,’ ‘we will be,’ ‘we shall truly be’ and ‘we shall ever be’)
  • مِنَ — May-na … (ush) — From (= Among, from or out of the class. See مِّنۡ  above.  A/t/a, ‘among’ and ‘of’)
  • الشّٰكِرِيۡنَ‏ — Shaa-kay-ree-n — The grateful (= n., pl., Those who are appreciative, grateful or thankful. Those who use and utilize the God-Given-Gifts fully and appropriately. A/t/a, ‘grateful,’ ‘grateful ones,’ ‘grateful (to Him), ‘thankful’ and ‘truly thankful’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                              006:063

 

ثُمَّ رُدُّوۡۤا اِلَى اللّٰهِ مَوۡلٰٮهُمُ الۡحَـقِّ‌ؕ اَلَا لَهُ الۡحُكۡمُ وَهُوَ اَسۡرَعُ الۡحَاسِبِيۡنَ‏

 

Thoom-ma-rood-do-elul-laa-hay-mao-laa-ho-mool-huqq                                                          Aa-laa-la-hool-hook-mo-wa-ho-wa-us-ra-ool-haa-say-bee-n

 

Then they are returned to Allah, their real Master.                                                      Isn’t the decision His and He is the Quickest of Reckoners.

  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • مَوۡلٰ — Mao-laa — Master (= n., Owner. A/t/a, ‘master,’ ‘Lord,’ ‘protector)’ and ‘Maula [The Master (God)]’)
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo..(ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • الۡحَـقِّ — Huqq — Real (= Adj., Genuine; real; true. A/t/a, ‘The (only) Reality,’ ‘the True one, ’ ‘the Just,’ ‘the Just Lord (to reward them),’ ‘the only true one,’ ‘the Truth’ and ‘true’)
  • اَ — Aa — Is (= Word asking a question like are, can, could, do, did, have, had, shell, should, will, would, what, etc. A/t/a, ‘Hearken’ and ‘surely’)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • لَ —  La — Belong to (= Belong; for the attention, benefit, cause, convenience, object, purpose or reason of; to; towards).
  • هٗ — Hoo … (ol) — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • الۡحُكۡمُ — Hook-mo — Decision (= n., Commanding; decision making; decreeing; judgment; order)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • هُوَ   — Ho-wa — He (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. He; it. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • اَسۡرَعُ — Us-ra-ool — Quickest (= adj., Fastest. A/t/a, ‘Quickest,’ ‘Swiftest’ and ‘most swift’)
  • الۡحَاسِبِيۡنَ — Ha-say-bee-n — Reckoners  (= n., pl. Checkers; examiners; inspectors; over-lords; overseers; reckoners; those who  take or call to account.  A/t/a, ‘In taking account,’ ‘reckoner’ and ‘is His reckoning’)
