ثُمَّ لَمۡ تَكُنۡ فِتۡـنَـتُهُمۡ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ قَالُوۡا وَاللّٰهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشۡرِكِيۡنَ

 ‏

Thoom-ma-lum-ta-koon-fit-na-to-hoom-il-laa-un-qaa-loo                                                          Wul-laa-hay-rub-bay-naa-maa-koon-naa-mosh-ray-kee-n

 

 Then their mischief won’t be there, except that they said,                                          “By our God Allah we never have been idolaters.”

 

  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; further more; subsequently; thereafter. A/t/a,  ‘There will then be (left),’ ‘On that day’ and ‘There will then’)

  • فِتۡـنَـتُ — Fit-na-to — Mischief (= n., Artifice; deception; excuse; ploy; pretense; ruse; stratagem; test; trick. A/t/a, ‘subterfuge,’ ‘contention,’ ‘argue’ and ‘Fitnah (excuses statements or arguments)’
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless. A/t/a, ‘naught save’)
  • اَنۡ — Un — Surely (= Absolutely; certainly; definitely; positively; verily)
  • قَالُوۡا — Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past, pl., m; 3rdperson: All those men announced;        called; declared; told. See Notes 002:121 and our Commentary ‘You say’ means …” A/t/a, ‘they would say,’ ‘Their only answer will be,’ ‘they shall say,’ ‘they will say’ and ‘to say’)
  • وَ  — Wa…(ul) — And (= The وَ  vaao when used with the Almighty God’s name is tantamount to taking oath with His name; solemn declaration or calling as a witness. Normally a Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally. Also, and but; more over; though; when; while; yet; whereupon. A/t/a, ‘by God’ and ‘By Allah’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • رَبِّ — Rub-bay — The Provider (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures; Creator; Master; One Who Sustain; The Lord provident; The Ultimate Provider of Air, water, food and whatever we need to live and subsist). A/t/a,  ‘our true  and ‘Our Lord’)
  • نَآ — Naa — We (= pro., pl., 1st person. Our; we’)
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Not at all (= Absolutely not; no; never; not. A/t/a, ‘were not’)
  • كُنَّا — Koon-na — We have been (= v, past., pl., 1st person. Became. Happened. Occurred. Taken or took place or shape. This is a combination of two words. The 1st word  كُنۡ  conveys the continuation from the past to the present and leading into the future. The 2nd word  نَآ  means ‘all of us.’ Jointly the two words mean ‘we had been’, we ‘used to.’ A/t/a, ‘we were’)
  • مُشۡرِكِينَ  Moosh-ray-keen — The idolaters (= n., m., pl., Those who set up equals, partners, peers etc., with the Almighty God. Men who ascribe or associate  and worship imaginary gods with the Almighty God.  Unbelieving pagan men. See Note 004:037. A/t/a,  Polytheists; who joined gods With God,’ ‘associated other gods with You,’ ‘we have never worshipped idols’ and ‘those who joined others in worship with Allah’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                006:023

 

وَيَوۡمَ نَحۡشُرُهُمۡ جَمِيعً۬ا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ أَشۡرَكُوٓاْ أَيۡنَ شُرَكَآؤُكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُونَ

 

Wa-yao-ma-nah-sho-ro-hom-ja-mee-un                                                                                          Thoom-ma-na-qoo-lo-lil-la-zee-nush-ra-koo                                                                                    Ai-na-sho-ra-kaa-o-ko-mool-la-zee-na-koon-toom-tuz-aa-moo-n

 

And think of the day We gather them all.                                                                          Then We say to those who set up equals to Allah,                                                  “Where are your Partners whom you used to assert?”

  • يَوۡمَ — Yao-ma — The day (= n., s., A juncture, moment, period, term or time which comes to an end. A/t/a, ‘think of the day,’ ‘One day,’ ‘on the day’and ‘(Beware of) the day when’)
  • نَحۡشُرُ — Nsh-sho-ro — We gather (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Collect; have his helpers, helpmates or henchmen come out; summon his aides, gang, people and supporters. A/t/a, ‘shall We gather … together,’ ‘We shall gather … together,’ ‘we gather …  together’ and ‘We shall drive’)
  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • جَمِيۡعًا — Ja-me-un — All (= adv., Altogether, completely, entirely, totally or wholly accumulated, amassed, assembled, brought together, collected, concentrated, concerted, crowded, herded together in great numbers, in groups, and in company with others)
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma — Then (= After that; further more; subsequently; thereafter)
  • نَقُولُ —  Na-qoo-lo — We say (= v., pres., pl., 1st person. Announce; ask; call; inquire; question; tell. A/t/a, ‘We shall say,’ ‘We shall question’ and ‘shall we say’)
  • لِ — Lay…(il) — For (= For the object, person or reason of; from; intended for; meant for; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘to’ and ‘unto’)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons,  or phenomenon or things in masculine gender)
  • أَشۡرَكُوٓاْ — Ush-ra-koo — They set up equals (= v., past. pl., 3rd person. Practiced idolatry. Alleged, asserted, associated or attributed partners to God Almighty. Worshiped deities or anyone other than Him Alone. See Note 004:037 and Note 004:037. A/t/a, ‘ascribed partners (to us),’ ‘ascribed partners (unto Allah),’ ‘associated partners with God,’ ‘associated other gods with God’ and ‘joined partners (in worship with Us).’ But ‘associate partners with Us,’ ‘associate partners (with us)’ and ‘set up gods (with Allah)’ which are verbs in the present tense, and ‘idolaters’ which is a noun, are no translations of what the Holy Qor-aan has used a verb in the past tense)
  • اَيۡنَ — Ai-na — Where (= Which direction or destination; wither. A/t/a, ‘Where are,’ ‘where are (now)’ and ‘where are … now’)
  • شُرَكَآؤُ — Sho-ra-kaa-o — Partners (= n., pl. Associates; peers; sharers. See أَشۡرَكُوٓاْ above.  ‘partners you spoke of,’ ‘partners (false deities),’ ‘associates,’ ‘associate-gods’ and ‘idols’)
  • كُمُ — Ko-mo … (ol) — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan  addresses men and women jointly this way generally)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those who. See ٱلَّذِينَ  above. A/t/a, ‘about whom’ and ‘those whom’)
  • كُنۡتُمۡ — Koon-toom — You used to (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You have been since the past; were continuously + The Holy Qor-aan states this way when addressing both men and women jointly. A/t/a, ‘you used to’ and ‘you were’)
  • تَزۡعُمُونَ — Tuz-aa-moo-n — You assert (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Claim; imagine; profess; put up; set up. A/t/a, ‘set up,’ ‘assert (as gods)’ and ‘you … assert (as partners in worship with Allah.’ But the noun in ‘partners of  your make-believe,’ and the verb in past tense in ‘ye (invented And) talked about?,’ ‘whom you asserted,’ ‘you spoke of … you … to assert,’ ‘you were asserting’ and ‘you supposed to be your gods’ are no translations of what the Holy Qor-aan described with a verb in the present tense)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                   006:022

 

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦۤ‌ۗ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَا يُفۡلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

 

Wa  mun  uz-la-mo  mim-may  nif-ta-raa  aa-lul  laa-hay  ka-zay-bun                                  Auo  kuz-za  bay  aa-yaa-tay  he                                                                                                    Inna  hoo  laa  yoof-lay-hoo  zaa-lay-moo-n 

 

And who is more unfair than one who concocted a lie against Allah,                     Or lied with His signs?                                                                                                    Certainly, He does not let the wrongdoers prosper.

A/t/a, ‘guilty of greater injustice’ which is a noun, or verbs as in ‘doth greater wrong,’ ‘doth more wrong,’ ‘does a greater evil’ and ‘does more aggression and wrong’ are no translation of the adjective that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
  • مِمَّنِ  — Mim-ma-n … (if) — From who (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ (min) means ‘among, from or out of the class, category, count, kind or several persons or things. The second word  مَنۡ  (mun) means ‘anyone; who, whoever, whom. A/t/a, ‘than he’ and ‘than the man)
  • افۡتَرٰى — If-tra — Concocted (= v., past., s., 3rd person. He padded up lies to appear true.  This word shows people had pursued for bad a result and not for any good outcome; see details in 003:025. A/t/a, ‘fabricates,’  inventeth,’ ‘invents’ and ‘forges’ with a verb in the present tense but that is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan described with a verb in the past tense)
  • عَلٰى — Ala … (ul) — On (= About; above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon. A/t/a, ‘in the name of,’ ‘and attributes it to God’ and ‘about’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • كَذِبًا — Ka-zay-bun — A lie (= adj., Falsehood; fib; tall tale; untruth; white lie)
  • اَوۡ — Auo — Or else (= Alternatively; in substitution)

اَ لَّذِيۡنَ اٰتَيۡنٰهُمُ الۡـكِتٰبَ يَعۡرِفُوۡنَهٗ كَمَا يَعۡرِفُوۡنَ اَبۡنَآءَهُمُ‌ۘ اَ لَّذِيۡنَ خَسِرُوۡۤا اَنۡفُسَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ

 

Ul-la-zee-na-aa-tai-naa-ho-mool-kay-ta-ba                                                                                  Yau-ray-foo-na-hoo-ka-maa-yau-ray-foo-na-ub-naa-aa-hoom                                                Ul-la-zee-na-aa-kha-say-roo-un-fo-sa-hoom                                                                              Fa-hoom-laa-yoe-may-noo-n

 

Those whom we gave the Book                                                                                        Recognize it like that they recognize their sons.                                                              Those who lost their souls                                                                                                    Then they do not believe.

قُلۡ اَىُّ شَىۡءٍ اَكۡبَرُ شَهَادَةً  ؕ قُلِ اللّٰهُ ‌ۙ شَهِيۡدٌ ۢ بَيۡنِىۡ وَبَيۡنَكُمۡ‌  وَاُوۡحِىَ اِلَىَّ هٰذَا الۡـقُرۡاٰنُ لِاُنۡذِرَكُمۡ بِهٖ وَمَنۡۢ بَلَغَ‌ ؕ  اَٮِٕنَّكُمۡ لَـتَشۡهَدُوۡنَ اَنَّ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اٰلِهَةً اُخۡرٰى‌ؕ  قُلْ لَّاۤ اَشۡهَدُ‌ ۚ   قُلۡ اِنَّمَا هُوَ اِلٰـهٌ وَّاحِدٌ وَّاِنَّنِىۡ بَرِىۡٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُوۡنَ‌ۘ‏

 

Qool-ay-yo-sha-in-uk-ba-ro-sha-haa-da-ton.

Qo-lil-laa-ho-sha-he-doon-bai-nee-wa-bai-na-koom                                                                    Wa-oo-hay-ya-aiy-luy-ya-haa-zul-qoor-aa-no                                                                              Lay-oon-zay-ra-koom-bay-he-wa-mun-ba-la-gha                                                                        Aa-in-na-koom-la-tush-ha-do-na                                                                                                        Un-na-ma-ul-laa-hay-aa-lay-ha-ton-ookh-ra

Qool-laa-ush-ha-do

Qool-in-na-maa-ho-wa-elaa-hoon-waa-hay-doon                                                                      Wa-in-na-nee-ba-re-yoon-mim-maa-toosh-ray-koo-n

 

Say, “What thing is stronger in evidence?”

Say, “Allah is the witness between you and Me.                                                                And this Qor-aan has been revealed to me so that                                                          You and whomever it reached be warned.                                                                      Are you sure that you can testify                                                                                             That with Allah is another god?”

Say, “I do not testify for that.”

Say, “He surely is the Only One worthy of worship                                                        And I sure am not liable for what you set up as partners with God.” 

 

  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Announce; broadcast; call; convey; explain; inform; insist; maintain; proclaim; profess; propagate; state; tell. See Commentary ‘You say’ means…’ A/t/a, ‘say,’ ‘Ask them,’ ‘Ask,’ ‘Say ‘(O Muhammad)’ and ‘Say (O Muhammad s.a.w)’
  • اَيُّ — Auy-yo — What (= Refers to a small number out of a much larger group. A/t/a, ‘what … counts,’ ‘Who is’ and ‘Whose  … is’)
  • شَىۡءٍ — Shai-in — Thing (= Anything at all however little or insignificant. A whit. Not the least. Smallest part of an article, item, object, material, thing, matter, type, phenomenon or stuff. To the least extent. Also, Some, something, or somewhat.
  • أَكۡبَرُ — Uk-ba-ro — Stronger (= adj., Comparatively of bigger, graver, greater or stronger concern, matter or support when used for a good fact, person, occurrence or thing. When used for a serious, severe or sinister offence, transgression or wrong, the word means massive, more heinous. A/t/a, ‘weightiest,’ ‘most weighty,’ ‘of more weight,’ ‘most great,’ ‘most’ and ‘greatest.’ But by stating ‘the best (witness)’ the author clearly meant that the word indicated a human witness and not the value or service he rendered)
  • شَهَادَةً — Sha-haa-da-ton — Evidence (= n., What corroborates, proves or supports the testimony. An eye-witness account; anything that proves a fact; attestation; corroboration; evidence; observation; proof; testimony. Any means that makes another person see a past event so clearly visible today as if he had seen it himself. This word points to the evidentiary value, the fact of evidence and the strength of testimony as shown ‘in evidence,’ ‘in testimony’ and ‘testimony.’ But some authors construed this word to mean the person who ‘as a witness,’ ‘in respect of bearing testimony’ and ‘as witness’ rendered that service)
  • قُلِ — Qo-lil — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Answer; announce. See  قُلۡ  above. A/t/a, ‘say’ and ‘and then tell them’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God. A/t/a, ‘it is Allah,’  ‘Allah is’  and ‘Allah (The Most Great)’
  • شَہِيدُۢ — Sha-he-doon — Witness (= n., s., Attester, observer, onlooker, testifier, verifier,  watch, watcher or witness. Adducer of proof. Bearer, giver or provider of evidence or testimony. Producer of corroboration. Also, helper, seer or supporter. A bearer of testimony or giver of evidence who attended or was present or near to have seen, observed or noticed when the event or fact in question occurred. Testifier. A/t/a, ‘is  a witness,’ ‘is witness,’ ‘is Witness’ and ‘Let … be our witness’)

وَهُوَ ٱلۡقَاهِرُ فَوۡقَ عِبَادِهِۦ‌ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٱلۡخَبِيرُ

 

Wa-ho-wul-qua-hay-ro-fao-qa-eaiy-baa-day-he                                                                            Wa-ho-wul-ha-kee-mool-kha-bee-r.

And He is the Strongest upon His servants                                                                        And He is The Wisest, The Most Informed

وَإِن يَمۡسَسۡكَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ۬ فَلَا ڪَاشِفَ لَهُ ۥۤ إِلَّا هُوَ‌ۖ  وَإِن يَمۡسَسۡكَ بِخَيۡرٍ۬ فَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ۬ قَدِيرٌ۬

 

Wa-in-yum-sus-kul-laa-ho-bay-dzoor-rin                                                                                        Fa-laa-kaa-shay-fa-la-hoo-il-laa-hoo                                                                                                Wa-in-yum-sus-ka-bay-khai-rin                                                                                                        Fa-ho-wa-alaa-kool-lay-shai-in-qa-dee-r

 

And if Allah reaches you with a harm                                                                                    Then nobody is a reliever for it except Him Alone.                                                          And if He reaches you with a good thing                                                                          Then He is the Controller of everything

  • لَ — La — For (= Concerning; regarding; relative to)

Mun-yoos-ruf-un-ho-yao-ma-aiy-zin-fa-qud-ra-hay-ma-h0                                                      Wa-zaa-lay-kul-fao-zool-mo-bee-n

 

Whoever is kept away from it that day is indeed whom He showed mercy            And that is a very clear success.

Qool-in-ne-aa-khaa-fo-in-aa-saiy-to-rub-bee-aa-zaa-ba-yao-min-aa-zeem

 

Say, “If I certainly fear if I disobey my God the punishment of the awful day.”

 

  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Announce; broadcast; call; convey; explain; inform; insist; maintain; proclaim; profess; propagate; state; tell. See Commentary ‘You say’ means.’ A/t/a, ‘tell them also:’

  • رَبِّ — Rub-bee  — Lord Provident (= The Almighty Allah who fills all needs of all His creatures; Creator; Master; One Who Sustain; The Lord provident; The Ultimate Provider of Air, water, food and whatever we need to live and subsist)

Qool-aa-ghai-rul-laa-hit-ta-khay-zo-wa-lee-yun                                                                            Faa-tay-riss-sma-waa-tay-wul-ur-dzay                                                                                            Wa-ho-wa-yoot-aiy-mo-wa-laa-yoot-um

Qool-in-nee-o-mir-to-un-aa-koo-na-uwwa-la-mun-us-la-ma                                                    Wa-laa-ta-koo-nun-na-may-nul-moosh-ray-kee-n

 

Say, “Shall I take a friend other than Allah                                                                      Creator of the heavens and the earth                                                                              And Who feeds and is not fed?”

Say, “I certainly am commanded that I be the first who submitted                          And you too not be among the idolaters.”

  • وَلِيًّ۬ا — Wa-lee-yun — Friend (= n., s., Best, genuine, real, sincere, total and true … aide, assistant, friend, guardian, helper, patron, protector, supporter; well-wisher; whoever is there to heed when called in need. A/t/a, ‘protecting friend,’ ‘any protector,’ ‘Wali (helper, Protector, Lord or God)’ and ‘Defender’)
  • فَاطِرِ — Faa-tay-ray  … (iss) — Creator (= n., Designer. Developer. Fashioner. Originator. ‘Master’ and ‘Maker’)
  • السَّمٰوٰتِ — Sa-maa-waa-tay — The heavens (= n., pl., All above ground or earth; clouds; firmament; rain; skies; space; universe. Also, knowledge of astronomical objects)
  • وَ — Wa … (ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • الۡاَرۡضِ — Ul-ur-dzay — Earth (= n., s., Area; country; earth; ground; land; territory. Also, life on earth, nation; people or society in general)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above)
  • هُوَ — Ho-wa — He (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. He; him; it. Refers to aforesaid shown, specified or stated article, thing or person. A/t/a, ‘He it is,’ ‘It is He’ and ‘who)
  • يُطۡعِمُ — Yoot-aiy-mo — Feeds (= v., pres., s., 3rd person. Affords, allows, enables, gives  or supplies food and eatables. A/t/a, ‘feeds,’ ‘feeds all,’ Feedeth’ and ‘gives nourishment to all’)
  • وَ — Wa – And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘but’)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
  • يُطۡعَمُ‌ — Yoot-aa-mo — Is fed (= v., pres., pass., s., 3rd person. Is afforded an opportunity to eat. Is allowed, furnished, given or supplied food; Is permitted the consumption of eatables. A/t/a, ‘is never fed,’ ‘needs not to be fed,’ ‘is fed by none’ and ‘is nourished by none’)
  • قُلۡ — Qool — Say (= v., s, 2nd person. Announce; call; command; direct; state; tell. See قُلۡ above. A/t/a, ‘tell them’)
  • اِنِّىۡۤ — In-nee — Certainly I (= Combination of two words. The 1st word  اِنۡ  (in) means  absolutely, clearly, decidedly, doubtlessly, positively, indeed, really, surely, truly or verily. The 2nd word ىۡ is the pronoun for one in 1st person. A/t/a, ‘Nay! but I,’ ‘I am’ and ‘I was’)
  • اُمِرۡتُ — O-mir-to — I’m commanded (= v., past., pass., s., 1st person. Bid; commanded; dictated; directed; instructed; mandated; ordered; told.
  • اَنۡ — Un — That (= So that)
  • أَڪُونَ — Aa-koo-na — I be (= v., press., 1st person. Turn into. A/t/a,  “I be’, ‘to be’  and ‘to render’)
  • أَوَّلَ — Uw-wa-la — First (= adj., At apex., foremost; on top. A/t/a, ‘the most perfect’)
  • مَنۡ — Mun — Who (= Anyone; whoever; whom; whomever; whoso. A/t/a, ‘of’ [as stated by authors M Muhammad Ali, Maulawi Sher Ali and M Mohsin Khan among others] but that would be accurate if the Holy Qor-aan had used the word مِنۡ  here)
  • أَسۡلَمَ‌ — Us-la-ma — Submitted (= v., past., s., 3rd person. Bowed down; surrendered. A/t/a, ‘bow To God (in Islam),’ ‘to surrender (unto Him),’ to submit to Him,’ ‘submit,’ ‘submit (to God),’ ‘submit themselves to Allah (as Muslims)’ and ‘to submit himself to the will of God.’ But it is inaccurate to translate this word as ‘obedience’ which is a noun because the Holy Qor-aan has stated here the fact with a verb)

  • مِنَ — May-n … (ul) — Among (= From the class, category, count, kind, persons or out of. A/t/a, ‘of the company of’ and ‘of’)
  • الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ — Moosh-ray-kee-n — The idolaters (= n., m., pl., Men who ascribe, associate or set up equal or partners to God Almighty Allah. Men who worship imaginary gods or anything other than the Almighty God. Polytheists. Unbelieving pagan men. See our  Commentary Abraham was not an idolater. A/t/a, ‘who associate partners with Allah,’ ‘Mushrakun (polytheists, pagans,  idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah – Tafsir Al-Qurtubi),’ ’Who join gods with God,’ ‘who associate partners with God’ and ‘serve no other god besides Him’)
