The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                             005:089

 

 وَكُلُوۡا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللّٰهُ حَلٰلًا طَيِّبًا وَّ اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ الَّذِىۡۤ اَنۡـتُمۡ بِهٖ مُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ‌

 

Wa-ko-loo-mim-maa-ra-za-qa-ko-mool-laa-ho-ha-laa-lun-toy-yay-bun                                Wut-ta-qool-laa-hul-la-zee-un-toom-bay-he-moe-may-noo-n

 

And you eat out of what Allah has provided for you, lawfully, cleanly.                  And you should love Allah in Whom you surely are the believers.

 

  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also;                more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • كُلُوۡا — Ko-loo — You eat (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Chomp; consume; devour;  feast; upon; gobble; gorge; gulp; have; munch; partake; scoff; swallow. A/t/a, ‘eat’  and ‘Eat freely’)
  • مِمَّا — Mim-maa — Out of what (= Combination of two words. The first word  مِنۡ   (min) means among, from or out of the class, category, kind count or several persons or things. The second word مَاۤ (maa) means all that, what, whatever, any time, when, whenever. Combining both words means, for what, out of what, concerning, regarding, relative to, thereby. A/t/a, ‘out of,’ ‘of the things which,’ ‘of  that which,’ ‘of what’ and ‘of’)
  • رَزَقَ — Ra-za-qa — Provided (= v. past., pl., 3rd person. Bestowed; blessed; conferred; delivered; donated; furnished; gave; gifted; granted; supplied. A/t/a, ‘has provided,’  ‘bestowed’ and ‘has given’)
  • كُمُ — Ko-mo … (ol) — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan  has addressed men and women jointly this way)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • حَلٰلًا — Ha-laa-lun — Lawfully (= adv. In the form of a thing being allowed, approved, legal and permitted. A/t/a, ‘lawful’ and ‘of (things) lawful’)
  • طَيِّبًا — Toy-yay-bun — Cleanly (= adv., In the form of a thing being طَيِّب which is singular  for the plural  طَيِّبٰتِ as explained in verse 002:058. A/t/a, ‘wholesome things,’ ‘good and pure’ and ‘good’)

The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Wut-ta-qool-laa-ha … in many contexts

  • وَ — Wa … (ut) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses.  See وَ   above)
  • اتَّقُوا — Ta-qoo … (la) — You love (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act piously and avoid angering Allah by being deeply in love with Him; be afraid, pious or righteous. See our Commentary titled as The Righteous. Also, ‘fear,’ ‘have fear,’ ‘keep your duty,’ ‘be mindful of your duty’ and ‘take … as a shield)
  • ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
  • الَّذِىۡ — La-zee  — He who (= s., m., 3rd person article, thing or person; he; who. A/t/a, ‘Whom’ and  ‘whom’)
  • اَنۡـتُمۡ — Un-toom — Surely you (= Combination of two words. The first word is  اَنۡ  that means absolutely, certainly, definitely, positively, really, surely, truly or verily. The second word is   تُمۡ  which means you. A/t/a, ‘ye’ and ‘you’)
  • بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ  means with. A/t/a, ‘in’)
  • هٖ — He — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the aforesaid person.  A/t/a, ‘whom’)
  • مُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ — Moe-may-noo-n — Believers (= n., pl. Adherents of Islam; those who enter the Faith, believe and follow the Holy Qor-aan, the Isslaam and become Moslems. Men of faith. The faithful. See Commentary Believe and Disbelieve. A/t/a, ‘ye are believers.’ Any translation such as ‘believe’ and ‘repose your faith’ are not of what the Holy Qor-aan has described as a noun)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                             005:088

 

يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تُحَرِّمُوۡا طَيِّبٰتِ مَاۤ اَحَلَّ اللّٰهُ لَـكُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡتَدُوۡا‌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الۡمُعۡتَدِيۡنَ‏

 

Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo                                                                                                Laa-to-hur-ray-moo-toy-yay-baa-tay                                                                                          Maa-aa-hul-lul-laa-ho-la-koom-wa-laa-tau-ta-doo                                                                      In-nul-laa-ha-laa-yo-hib-bool-moe-ta-dee-n

 

Listen, you all who have believed!                                                                                          Do not prohibit the clean portions of good things                                                          Which Allah has made lawful for you and do not cross the line.                            Surely Allah does not love those who cross the line.

 

 The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times

  • يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
  • اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha(ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
  • اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. See Commentaries Phrase Aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-may-loos … and Believe and Disbelieve that floodlight other aspects how the Holy Qor-aan has used this word. Any translation in the present tense such as ‘believe’ or as a noun such as ‘Believers’ is not of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in the past tense)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation)
  • تُحَرِّمُوۡا — To-hur-ray-moo — Prohibit (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Disallow; forbid. A/t/a, ‘make unlawful,’ ‘make … unlawful,’ ‘declare … as unlawful,’ ‘forbid yourselves’ and ‘forbid’)
  • طَيِّبٰتِ — Toy-yay-baa-tay  — Clean portions (= pl., Parts, parcels or portions of the things which are … Best, good noble and pure part earned cleanly, equitably, fairly, honorably and legally. See 002:258. A/t/a, ‘good things,’ ‘the wholesome things,’ ‘good and pure things’ and ‘the Tayyibat (all that is good as regards foods, things, deeds, beliefs, persons)’
  • مَاۤ — Maa — Which (= All that; what; whatever; whatsoever; which)
  • اَحَلَّ — Aa-hul-la … (ul) — Made lawful (= v., past., 3rd person. Accepted; allowed; approved; authorized; legalized; licensed; permitted.  Declared appropriate, kosher or proper. A/t/a, ‘Hath made lawful,’ ‘has made lawful’ and ‘permitted’)
  • اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘to’)
  • كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. The Holy Qor-aan has addressed men and women jointly this way)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • لَا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor. See  لَا  above)
  • تَعۡتَدُوۡا‌ — Tau-ta-doo — You cross the line (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Cause corruption; commit excess; cross or exceed the limit; cross over decency; mess up; spoil; ruin; transgress; take undue advantage.   • الۡمُعۡتَدِيۡنَ‏ — Moe-ta-dee-n — Who cross the line (= n., pl., Who crosses known boundaries, exceeds marked limits, goes beyond bounds and tramples all over in disbelief, disobedience and deception. A/t/a, ‘transgressors,’  ‘who transgress,’ ‘those given to excess,’ ‘who exceed the limits’ and ‘the excessive’)

The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                 005:087

 

 وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا وَكَذَّبُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَاۤ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡجَحِيۡمِ‏

 

Wul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-wa-kuz-za-boo-bay-aa-yaa-tay-naa                                                  Olaa-aiy-ka-us-haa-bool-ja-hee-m

 

And those who disbelieved and belied our signs                                                              All are inmates of the Hell.

A/t/a, ‘rejected,’ denied’ and ‘cried lies to Our Messages.’ Any translation in the present tense such as ‘belie,’ ‘reject’ and ‘deny’ is not of what the Holy Qor-aan has described in the past tense)

  • اَصۡحٰبُ — Us-haa-bo o.. (ol) — Inmates (= pl., Associates; companions; fellows; folks; friends; people. A/t/a, ‘owners,’ ‘heirs,’ ‘inmates,’ ‘inhabitants’ and ‘dwellers’)
  • ٱلۡجَحِيم — Ja-hee-m — Hell (= Blazing fire; burning flame; Purgatory; Gehenna; hell-fire; scourge. A/t/a, ‘the (Hell) Fire’ and ‘flaming fire’)

 فَاَثَابَهُمُ اللّٰهُ بِمَا قَالُوۡا جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِىۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِهَا الۡاَنۡهٰرُ خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا‌ ؕ وَذٰ لِكَ جَزَآءُ الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ

 

Fa-aa-thaa-ba-ho-mool-laa-ho-bay-maa-qaa-loo                                                                          Jun-naa-tin-tuj-ree-min-tah-tay-hul-un-haa-ro-khaa-lay-de-na-fee-haa                                Wa-zaa-lay-ka-ja-zaa-ool-moh-say-nee-n

 

So Allah reached them for what they said with                                                  Gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwellers there forever.                                      And that is the reward for the Do-gooders.

  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — For what (= Combination of two words. بِ  means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ  means ‘all that, what, whatever or whatsoever. The two combined بِمَا (bay-maa) mean ‘because of; on account of; for the reason; due to; with / in all that. A/t/a, ‘for this,’ ‘for what,’ ‘because of that which’ and ‘because of what’)
  • قَالُوۡا —  Qaa-loo — They said (= v., past, pl, m, 3rd person. Announced; broadcast; called  conveyed; declared; informed; elaborated; explained; specified; told. A/t/a, ‘affirmed.’ But ‘saying’ or ‘say’ in the present tense – or ‘for their words’ which is a noun — are no translations of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a verb in the past tense)

  • خٰلِدِيۡنَ — Khaa-lay-dee-na — Dwellers (= n., pl., Abiders; dwellers; residents. For significant variations in the meanings see Note 002:040. A/t/a, ‘to abide,’ ‘shall they abide,’ ‘they shall abide … for ever,’ ‘shall dwell for ever,’ ‘they shall abide’ and ‘they will abide … for ever’ as verbs are no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated noun.   • ذٰلِكَ — Zaa-lay-ka  — This is (= Here; refers to an aforesaid fact, person or statement; it’s because; right here; such is this; that is how it is. A/t/a, ‘that is,’ ‘such indeed’ and ‘Such is’)
  • جَزَآءً — Ja-zaa-o — Reward (= n. Award; reward; trophy. Also consequence, result or  follow up since the word celebrates the appreciation, honor joy or jubilation for good deeds. A/t/a, ‘recompense’)
  • الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَۙ — Moh-say-nee-na — The Do-gooders (= n., pl., Who act, do and practice to be kind, caring, considerate, charitable, good, helpful, humane without seeking any consideration, reciprocation, quid pro quo or something for something. Altruistic. Benevolent. Philanthropic. Righteous. Self-sacrificing. Unselfish. Some authors narrowed the word to mean a Moslem. A/t/a, ‘who do good,’ ‘the doers of good,’ ‘the doers of good to others,’ ‘Al-Muhsinin (the good-doers …)’ and ‘the good’)

 

** Note 005:086. One author translated the words  خٰلِدِيۡنَ فِيۡهَا‌  as ‘their eternal home.’ He obviously had just copied from the translation of someone who had used the word  مَاۡ وٰى  (mau-wa) which means the eternal home.  See Commentary  Translations With Grammar Violated.

وَمَا لَـنَا لَا نُؤۡمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ وَمَا جَآءَنَا مِنَ الۡحَـقِّۙ وَنَطۡمَعُ اَنۡ يُّدۡخِلَـنَا رَبُّنَا مَعَ الۡقَوۡمِ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ‏

 

Wa-maa-la-naa-laa-noe-may-no-bil-laa-hay-wa-maa-jaa-aa-nul-huq-quay                        Wa-nut-ma-o-un-yood-khay-la-naa-rub-bo-naa-ma-ul-qao-mis-sua-lay-hee-n

 

And why won’t we believe Allah when the Truth has reached us                            And we are eager that our God enters us with the righteous people.

وَاِذَا سَمِعُوۡا مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَى الرَّسُوۡلِ تَرٰٓى اَعۡيُنَهُمۡ تَفِيۡضُ مِنَ الدَّمۡعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوۡا مِنَ الۡحَـقِّ‌ۚ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَاۤ اٰمَنَّا فَاكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ الشّٰهِدِيۡنَ‏

 

Wa-ezaa-sa-may-oo-maa-oon-zay-la-elur-ra-soo-lay                                                               Ta-raa-au-yo-na-hoom-ta-fee-dzo-may-nud-dum-aiy                                                                Mim-maa-aa-ra-foo-may-nul-huq-quay                                                                                          Ya-qoo-loo-na-rub-ba-naa-aa-mun-naa                                                                                          Fuk-toob-naa-ma-ush-shaa-hay-dee-n

 

And when they heard what was entrusted to the Messenger                                      You saw their eyes shedding tears                                                                                        Because they recognized it as among the Truth.                                                          They say, “God of us all! We have believed.                                                                    So please record us along with the witnesses.

لَـتَجِدَنَّ اَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَدَاوَةً لِّـلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوا الۡيَهُوۡدَ وَالَّذِيۡنَ اَشۡرَكُوۡا‌ ۚ وَلَـتَجِدَنَّ اَ قۡرَبَهُمۡ مَّوَدَّةً لِّـلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوا الَّذِيۡنَ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّا نَصٰرٰى‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكَ بِاَنَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قِسِّيۡسِيۡنَ وَرُهۡبَانًا وَّاَنَّهُمۡ لَا يَسۡتَكۡبِرُوۡنَ‏

 

La-ta-jay-dun-na-aa-shud-dun-naa-say-aa-daa-wa-ton                                                            Lil-la-zee-na-aa-ma-nool-ya-hoo-da-wul-la-zee-na-ush-ra-koo

Wa-la-ta-jay-dun-na-uq-ra-ba-hoom-ma-wud-da-ton                                                             Lil-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-qaa-loo-in-naa-na-saa-raa

Zaa-lay-ka-bay-un-na-min-hoom-quis-se-see-na-wa-roh-baa-nun                                          Wa-un-na-hoom-laa-yus-tuk-bay-roo-n

 

You certainly will find the stronger in enmity                                                                  For those who believed are the Jews and those who set up equals to God.

And you surely will find the nearest in love                                                                 For those who believed are those who said, “We surely are Christians.”

This is because among them are the savants and Monks                                              And because they do not act arrogantly

وَلَوۡ كَانُوۡا يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالنَّبِىِّ وَمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡهِ مَا اتَّخَذُوۡهُمۡ اَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلٰـكِنَّ كَثِيۡرًا مِّنۡهُمۡ فٰسِقُوۡنَ‏

 

Wa-lao-kaa-noo-yoe-may-noo-na-bil-laa-hay                                                                              Wun-na-bee-yay-wa-maa-oon-zay-la-alai-hay                                                                              Maut-ta-kha-zoo-hoom-ao-lay-yaa-aa                                                                                             Wa-laa-kin-naa-ka-thee-run-min-hoom-faa-say-qoo-n

 

And if they had been believing in Allah                                                                                And the Prophet and what was entrusted to them                                                          They would not have taken them as the real friends.                                                  But many among them are miscreants.

تَرٰى كَثِيۡرًا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتَوَلَّوۡنَ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا‌ؕ لَبِئۡسَ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ لَهُمۡ اَنۡفُسُهُمۡ اَنۡ سَخِطَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَفِى الۡعَذَابِ هُمۡ خٰلِدُوۡنَ

 

Ta-raa-ka-thee-run-min-hoom-ya-ta-wul-lao-nul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo                                    La-bae-sa-maa-qud-da-mut-la-hoom-un-fo-so-hoom                                                                    Un-sa-khay-tul-laa-ho-alai-him                                                                                                          Wa-fil-azaa-bay-hoom-khaa-lay-doo-n

 

You see many among them turn to those who have disbelieved.                              Evil certainly is that their souls forwarded for themselves                                  Since Allah became angry with them.                                                                              And in punishment they are dwellers.

  • هُمۡ‌ — Hoom — They (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they; theirs)
  • خٰلِدُوۡنَ — Khaa-lay-doo-n — Dwellers (= n., pl. Those who live a long but limited time. See Note 002:040. A/t/a, ‘they abide,’ ‘they will abide,’ ‘they shall abide,’ ‘will they abide,’ ‘shall they abide,’ ‘they shall dwell forever’ and ‘shall endure eternal’ but neither that verb nor the concept of forever and eternal is a translation of the noun that the Holy Qor-aan has used)

** Note 005:081. The true meanings of the words  اَنۡ سَخِطَ اللّٰهُ  in the Holy Qor-aan are not given by some authors as shown below.

  1. The past tense in the text was translated in the present tense as ‘is displeased’ by A Yusuf Ali as ‘wrath is’ and by M Muhamad Ali, M Sher Ali, M Zafrulla Khan, M Ghulam Farid and A Rahman Omar.
  2. The past tense in the text was translated in the future tense as ‘will be wroth’ by Memaduke Pickthall
  3. The active voice in the text was translated in the passive voice as ‘wrath fell upon them’ by M Muhsin Khan and Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali.
  4. The text shows Allah as the subject as the One Who became angry. But people were made the subject in stating as ‘they have incurred the wrath’ by Dr Ahmad Zaidan and N J Dawood

كَانُوۡا لَا يَتَـنَاهَوۡنَ عَنۡ مُّنۡكَرٍ فَعَلُوۡهُ ‌ؕ لَبِئۡسَ مَا كَانُوۡا يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ‏

 

Kaa-noo-laa-ya-ta-na-hoo-na-un-moon-ka-rin-fa-aa-loo-ho                                                     La-bai-sa-maa-kaa-noo-yuf-aa-loo-n

 

They never used to stop each other from any repulsive thing that they did.        Certainly bad was that they used to do.

 

  • كَانُوۡۤا — Kaa-noo — Used to (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; went on; were doing. Words has or had always been indicate endless continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. A/t/a, ‘they used to’ and ‘did’)
  • لَا — Laa — Never (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception. A/t/a, ‘never’)
  • يَتَـنَاهَوۡنَ — Ya-ta-naa-hoo-na — They stop each other (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Forbid; prohibit; restrain; restrict. A/t/a, ‘(usually) Forbid one another,’ ‘forbid one another,’ ‘prohibit one another’ and ‘restrain one another.’ But ‘restrained,’ ‘forbade,’ ‘did … restrain one another,’ ‘did … prohibit one another’ and ‘did … forbid one another’ in the past tense is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the present tense)
  • عَنۡ — Un — From (= About; concerning; regarding; relative to)
  • مُّنۡكَرٍ — Moon-ka-rin — Repulsive (= adj., Something considered foul, discarded, hated,   loathed, repulsed. A/t/a, ‘the inequity,’ ‘The iniquities,’ ‘wickedness,’ ‘hateful things,’  ‘wrong-doing,’ ‘wrong things’ and ‘Al-Munkar (wrong evildoing sins, polytheism, disbelief’)
  • فَعَلُوۡا – Fa-aa-loo — Did (= v., past., m., pl., Acted; committed; dealt; did; fared; performed; reacted; returned; proceeded; treated)
  • هُ — Ho — That (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. It. Refers to the aforesaid thing. A/t/a, ‘which’)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; categorically; clearly, definitely doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; truly; seriously; surely; verily)
  • بِئۡسَ — Bae-sa Bad (= adj., Appalling; awful; dire; depraved; dreadful; evil; ghastly; horrific; sad; shocking; unacceptable. Also, undesirable; unlucky; unfortunate; unpleasant; vile; worst; worst possible; wretched. A/t/a, ‘evil,’ ‘evil was the way’ and ‘vile’)
  • مَاۤ  — Maa — All that (= What; whatever; whatsoever)
  • كَانُوۡۤا — Kaa-noo — Used to (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; went on; were doing. See كَا نُوۡۤ ا above. A/t/a, ‘used to’  and ‘was what’)
  • يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ — Yuf-aa-loon — They do (= v., pres., m., pl., 3rd person. Act; behave; commit; deal; do; perform; render; return; proceed; treat. A/t/a, ‘do’ and ‘follow.’ But ‘were the deeds …  they did,’ ‘were their deeds,’ ‘what they did’ and ‘they adopted’ in the past tense is not a translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the present tense)
