The Holy Qor-aan                                                                                                                     005:076

 

مَا الۡمَسِيۡحُ ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ اِلَّا رَسُوۡلٌ‌ ۚ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِ الرُّسُلُؕ وَاُمُّهٗ صِدِّيۡقَةٌ‌  ؕ كَانَا يَاۡكُلٰنِ الطَّعَامَ‌ؕ اُنْظُرۡ كَيۡفَ نُبَيِّنُ لَهُمُ الۡاٰيٰتِ ثُمَّ انْظُرۡ اَ نّٰى يُؤۡفَكُوۡنَ‏ 

 

Mul-ma-se-hoob-no-mur-ya-ma-il-laa-ra-soo-l(oon)                                                                    Qud-kha-lut-min-qub-lay-hir-ro-so-lo                                                                                              Wa-om-mo-hoo-sid-dee-qa-toon                                                                                                          Kaa-naa-yau-ko-laa-nit-ta-aa-ma

Oon-zoor-kai-fa-no-buy-yun-na-la-ho-mool-aa-yaa-tay                                                            Thoom-mun-zoor-un-naa-yoe-fay-koo-n

           

The Messiah son of Mary was not but a messenger.                                                    Surely the Messengers before him had passed away.                                                    And his mother was a very truthful lady.                                                                            They both used to eat food.

Look how clearly We state the Signs for them.                                                            Look again how come they disregard by deceits.

 

  • مَاۤ — Maa … (ul) –Not (= Absolutely not; no; never; nothing. A/t/a, ‘was only,’ ‘only  and ‘no more than’)    
  • الۡمَسِيۡحُ — Ul-ma-se-ho(b) — Messiah (= n., refers to Jesus Christ)
  • ابۡنُ — Ob-no — Son (= Boy; male child)
  • مَرۡيَمَ — Mur-ya-m(ul) — Mary (= The mother of Jesus Christ)
  • اِلَّا — Il-laa — Except (= Apart from; but; besides; excluding; save; unless.
  • رَسُوۡلٌ — Ra-soo-loon — Messenger (= pl., Apostle; God’s messenger; prophet; sage)
  • قَدۡ  — Qud — Surely (= This word lays emphasis like very definitely; surely.                          See Note 004:049 and our Commentary titled the “2 Words of Emphasis used together Multiply Effect.” A/t/a, ‘Most surely’ and ‘indeed’)
  • خَلَتۡ — Kha-lut — Passed away (= v., past., 3rd person., Became history; died; gone; gone by; happened; have been; occurred; passed away; past. A/t/a, ‘passed away,’ ‘have passed away,’ ‘had passed away’ and ‘have (like him) passed away’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several articles, counts, kind, things, persons or phenomenon)
  • قَبۡلِ — Qub-lay — Before (= Earlier, former, older, past or prior times. Aforetime. Ahead. Something that happened or occurred in prior periods antecedently, historically and previously. A/t/a, ‘before’)
  • هِ — Hay … (ir) — Him (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to the Almighty God)
  • الرُّسُلُ — Ro-so-lo — Messengers (= pl., Apostles; God’s messengers; prophets; sages;  saints. A/t/a, ‘messenger (the like of whom),’  ‘all the Messengers,’ ‘Messengers like unto him’ and ‘Messengers’)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • اُمُّ —  Oom-mo — Mother (= n., The biological relative who gives birth. A/t/a, ‘mother [Maryam (Mary)])
  • هٗ — Hoo — His (= pro., s., m., 3rd person. Refers to Jesus Christ)
  •  صِدِّيۡقَةٌ‌ — Sid-dee-qa-toon — Very truthful (= adj., Highly honest and truthful female human being. A/t/a, woman of truth,’ ‘saintly woman,’ ‘truthful woman,’ ‘paragon of truth,’ ‘highly truthful woman,’ ‘righteous’ and ‘Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in words of Allah and His books (see Verse 66:12)]
  • كَانَا — Kaa-naa  — Had been (= v., past., 2pl., 3rd person, Continuously did; used to; went on; were doing. Has or had always been)
  • يَاۡكُلٰنِ — Yau-ko-laa-n(it) — Eat (= v., pres., 2pl., 3rd person. Consume; partake. A/t/a,  ‘They had both to eat,’ ‘They both eat,’ ‘they both … eat (earthly) food,’ ‘they both were in need of and ate,’ ‘they both … eat,’ ‘eat,’ ‘they both … eat … (as any other human being , while Allah does not eat)’ and ‘they both ate’)
  • الطَّعَامَ‌ — Ta-aa-ma — Food (= n., Eating or feeding any food or eatable for subsistence.    A/t/a, ‘food,’ ‘Their (daily) food’ and ‘earthly food’)
  • اُنْظُرۡ  — Oon-zoor — You look (= v., pres., s., 2nd person. Check out; find; get to view;  look at; look out; observe; see; take notice; understand; view; watch for. A/t/a, ‘Behold!’)
  • كَيۡفَ — Kai-fa — How (= How would it be, do or fare. What would it look. In what fashion, manner, method or way; think of the time, event, occasion, opportunity or time)
  • نُبَيِّنُ — No-buy-yoon-na — We clearly state (= v., pres., 1st person Clarify, explain, expound or show with certain, convincing, irrefutable, manifest, sure or veritable arguments, corroborations, signs, portents, evidence, proofs or testimonies of Truth. A/t/a ‘God doth make … clear,’ ‘we make … clear,’ ‘We explain’ and ‘We make plain’)
  • لَ — La — For (= For the object, person, purpose or reason of; intended for; meant for; on account of; concerning; regarding; relative to. A/t/a, ‘for,’ ‘for their good’  and ‘to’ )
  • هُمُ — Ho-mo … (ol) — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they. A//t/a, ‘their  benefit’ and ‘their good’)
  • الۡاٰيٰتِ — Aa-yaa-tay — Signs (= n., pl of … An argument, corroboration, indication,  insinuation, pointer, portent, sign, suggestion, symbol or token. A/t/a, ‘the Signs,’ ‘His Signs,’ ‘Our Signs,’ ‘Our revelations,’ ‘messages,’ ‘revelations,’ ‘arguments’ and ‘Ayat [proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)’
  • ثُمَّ — Thoom-ma … (un) — Again (= Further more; subsequently; then again; thereafter. A/t/a, ‘and again,’ ‘yet’ and ‘then’)
  • انْظُرۡ — (U)n-zoor — Look (= v., pres., 2nd person, See; look. See  اُنْظُرۡ  above)
  • اَ نّٰى — Un-naa — How come (= From where; how could it be; whence; which way.  Signifies a question filled with surprise . A/t/a, ‘in what ways’ and ‘how’)
  • يُؤۡفَكُوۡنَ — Yoe-fa-koo-n –They disregard by deceit (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Concoct, conceive, device, disregard, fabricate, make believe, switch or twist facts by charades, deceit, deceptions and shams. A/t/a, ‘they ignore truth’ and ‘They are deluded Away from the truth.’ See Note 005:076 how mistranslating this word has grave implications.

 

** Note 005:076. First this verse tells people in the present tense to see the given Signs. Then the word  يُؤۡفَكُوۡنَ   (yoe-fa-koo-n) in the present tense shows how they disregard those Signs.

It is a mistranslation to translate this word in the past tense because it implies that they did the wrong act in the past only. The fact which the Holy Qor-aan states is in the present tense and that they are doing the wrong act continually, even now.

Our Commentary Translations With Grammar Violated shows how disregarding the rules of Arabic grammar has resulted in mistranslations and colossal mistakes.

Following authors — may be unintentionally but nevertheless – have mistranslated this word in the past tense which has grave implications.

  • A Rahman Omar: ‘turned away (from the truth)’;
  • D Ahmad Zidan: ‘perverted’;
  • M Mohsin Khan & Taqi-uddin al-Hilali: ‘deluded away ‘(from the truth) [mmk, tda];
  • M Zafrulla Khan: ‘led away’ and
  • M Muhammad Ali, M M Pickthall, M Sher Ali & M Ghulam Farid: ‘turned away’ [mma, mmp, msa, mgf]

اَفَلَا يَتُوۡبُوۡنَ اِلَى اللّٰهِ وَيَسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡنَهٗ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ‏

 

Aa-fa-laa-ya-too-boo-na-elul-laa-hay-wa-yus-tugh-fay-roo-na-hoo                                        Wul-laa-ho-Gha-foo-roo-ra-hee-m

 

Then why don’t they turn repentant to Allah and seek His forgiveness?           By God Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful

 

  • اَ — Aa — Why do (= Question mark like Are, can; have; shell; will)
  • فَ  — Fa — Then (= After all this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; in conclusion; so; thereafter; therefore; thus)
  • لَا — Laa — Not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute  denial and total negation without exception)
  • يَتُوۡبُوۡنَ — Ya-to-boo-na — Turn repentant (= v., pres., m. pl., 3rd person. They express regretfully and remorsefully; seek forgiveness and repentance; turn in penitence. See Note 002:038. A/t/a, ‘turn,’ ‘rather turn,’ ‘turn with repentance,’ ‘turn … in repentance’ and ‘repent’)
  • اِلَى — E-lul — To (= In the direction of; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘unto’)
  • اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
  • وَ  — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
  • يَسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡنَ — Yus-tugh-fay-roo-na — Seek forgiveness (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Ask, beg, implore or try forgiveness, pardon or salvation. A/t/a, ‘seek forgiveness,’ ‘beg … forgiveness,’ ‘seek … protection’ and ‘ask … forgiveness’)

  • رَّحِيۡمٌ‏ — Ra-hee-m — Most Merciful (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most, and highlights that none more than Him shows mercy again and again, continually, incessantly and indefinitely like endlessly and perpetually incoming waves from the oceans; Merciful Forever. لَـقَدۡ كَفَرَ الَّذِيۡنَ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّ اللّٰهَ ثَالِثُ ثَلٰثَةٍ‌ ۘ وَمَا مِنۡ اِلٰهٍ اِلَّاۤ اِلٰـهٌ وَّاحِدٌ  ؕ    وَاِنۡ لَّمۡ يَنۡتَهُوۡا عَمَّا يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ لَيَمَسَّنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا مِنۡهُمۡ عَذَابٌ   اَ لِيۡمٌ‏

 

La-qud-ka-fa-rul-la-zee-na-qaa-loo-in-nul-laa-ha                                                                        Thaa-lay-tho-tha-laa-tha-ta                                                                                                              Wa-maa-min-elaa-hin-il-laa-elaa-hoon-waa-hid                                                                          Wa-in-lum-yun-ta-hoo-um-maa-ya-qoo-loo-na                                                                              La-ya-mus-sun-nul-la-zee-na-ka-fa-roo-min-hoom-azaa-boon-alee-m

 

Most certainly those who disbelieved had said. “Surely Allah                                    Is the third of the three.”                                                                                                            And none among gods is there except One God.                                                            And if they do not stop from what they say                                                                  Surely painful punishment will reach those who among them disbelieved.

  • ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Refers to those articles, persons,  or phenomenon or things in masculine gender. A/t/a, ‘those who’ and ‘that’)
  • كَفَرُوۡا — Ka-fa-roo — Disbelieved (= v., past, pl., 3rd person. Denied, refused and rejected the Faith and belief in Allah. See كَفَرَ  above. A/t/a,  ‘disbelieve’ which is a verb in the present tense, or ‘the blasphemers’ and disbelievers’ which are nouns, are not the translations of the word that the Holy Qor-aan has used)

لَقَدۡ كَفَرَ الَّذِيۡنَ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الۡمَسِيۡحُ ابۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ‌ ؕ وَقَالَ الۡمَسِيۡحُ يٰبَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ اعۡبُدُوا اللّٰهَ رَبِّىۡ وَرَبَّكُمۡ‌ ؕ اِنَّهٗ مَنۡ يُّشۡرِكۡ بِاللّٰهِ فَقَدۡ حَرَّمَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيۡهِ الۡجَـنَّةَ وَمَاۡوٰٮهُ النَّارُ‌ ؕ وَمَا لِلظّٰلِمِيۡنَ مِنۡ اَنۡصَارٍ

 

La  qud  ka-fa-ra  ul-la-zee-na  qaa-loo  in-naul  laa-ha                                                                Ho-wa  ul-ma-se-ho ob-no  mur-ya-ma                                                                                                 

Wa  qaa-la  ul-ma-se-ho  yaa  ba-ni  iss-ra-ee-la                                                                             Au-bo-do  ol-laa-ha  rub-bee  wa  rub-bo  koom                                                                              In-na  hoo  mun  yoosh-rik  bay  il-laa-hay                                                                                   Fa  qud  hur-ra-ma  ul-laa-ho  alai  hay  il-jun-na-ta                                                                    Wa  mau-waa-ho  on-naa-r

Wa  maa  lay  iz-zaa-lay-me-na  min  un-saa-r

 

Most certainly those who disbelieved had said, “Surely Allah                                    He is the Messiah son of Mary.”

And the Messiah said, “ Listen the sons of Israel!                                              Worship Allah, my God and your God.                                                                                Anyone who sets up partners with Allah                                                                              Then knows that Allah surely has prohibited to him the paradise.                          And the fire is his abode.”                           

And none among helpers are for the wrongdoers.

  • اَنۡصَارٍ    Un-saar — Helpers (= n., pl., The word is used for the bad like accomplices back-benchers, henchmen and partners in crime and grime [as stated in 002:271] and the good like aides, assistants, promoters and supporters – [as stated in 003:053,  005:073. A/t/a, ‘helpers,’ ‘no one to help’ and ‘shall help’)

 

** Note 005:073. This verse has used twice the word  قَدۡ  (qud) and twice the word  اِنَّ (in-na). Both these words have similar meanings such as certainly, surely, indeed, etc.

The emphasis repeated four times in one verse shows the significance of its message. Accurately translating this verse requires that the said significance is also repeated

A reader of English literature may find such repetition a bit unusual. But the importance of the message emphasized four times in one verse merits that it must be conveyed.

وَحَسِبُوۡۤا اَلَّا تَكُوۡنَ فِتۡنَةٌ فَعَمُوۡا وَصَمُّوۡا ثُمَّ تَابَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ثُمَّ عَمُوۡا وَصَمُّوۡا كَثِيۡرٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ بَصِيۡرٌۢ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa-ha-say-boo-ul-laa-ta-koo-na-fit-na-toon                                                                                  Fa-aa-moo-wa-sum-moo                                                                                                                  Thoom-ma-taa-bul-laa-ho-alai-him                                                                                                Thoom-ma-aa-moo-wa-sum-moo-ka-thee-roon-min-hoom                                                    Wul-laa-ho-ba-see-roon-bay-maa-yau-la-moo-n

 

And they thought that no mischief will happen                                                             So, they blinded and silenced themselves.                                                                        Then Allah turned with compassionate to them                                                          Then again many among them blinded and silenced themselves.                            And by God Allah is the seer of all that they practice.

A/t/a, ‘Seer,’ ‘All-Seer,’ ‘Watchful’ and ‘ever watching.’ But ‘sees well’ and ‘watches’ as verb is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated as a noun)
  • بِمَا — Bay-maa — All that (= Combination of two words. بِ  means ‘with / in’ and مَاۤ  means ‘all that, whatever, whatsoever or whenever.’ The combination بِمَا  (bay-maa) means ‘because of; on account of; for the reason; due to; with / in all that. A/t/a, ‘what’ and ‘over’)

لَقَدۡ اَخَذۡنَا مِيۡثَاقَ بَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ وَاَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ اِلَيۡهِمۡ رُسُلًا ؕ كُلَّمَا جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ ۢ بِمَا لَا تَهۡوٰٓى اَنۡفُسُهُمۙۡ فَرِيۡقًا كَذَّبُوۡا وَفَرِيۡقًا يَّقۡتُلُوۡنَ

 

La-qud-aa-khuz-naa-mee-thaa-qa-ba-nee-is-raa-ee-la                                                                Wa-ur-sul-naa-elai-him-ro-so-laa                                                                                                      Kool-la-maa-jaa-aa-hoom-ra-soo-loon                                                                                          Bay-maa-laa-tuh-waa-un-fo-sa-hoom                                                                                              Fa-free-qun-kuz-za-boo-wa-free-qun-yuq-to-loon.

 

We certainly took a pledge from the children of Israel                                                  And sent messengers to them.                                                                                                Every time a messenger came to them                                                                                  That their hearts did not like                                                                                                    One group belied then. And one group still persecuting.

  • يَّقۡتُلُوۡنَ — Yuq-to-loon — Persecuting (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. They condemn, fight, harm, hurt, oppose, oppress menacingly and unjustly. Historically no prophet including Jesus Christ has been successfully executed and so the best translation is persecuting or trying to kill. Only some contexts justify a translation to commit, carnage, massacre, mayhem, murder, slaughter or even kill or slay as shown in Commentary titled as Jihad – Is It Fighting. A/t/a, ‘they (Go so far as to) slay’ correctly as a verb in the present tense. But they ‘sought to slay him,’ ‘sought to kill,’ ‘slew,’  ‘(even) sought to kill’ and ‘killed’ in a verb in the past tense is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in a verb in the present tense. See Note 005:071 below)

 

** Note 005:071. This verse refers to two facts. Firstly, those who in the past belied their Prophets as stated in the earlier word كَذَّبُوۡا — a verb in the past tense. Secondly, those who at the present time are persecuting them as stated in the latter word  يَّقۡتُلُوۡنَ  – a verb in the present tense.

What is stated in a verb in the past tense is different from that in the present tense. Our Commentary Translations With Grammar Violated highlights that difference. But some authors like the following mistranslated the Holy Qor-aan by ignoring that difference.

  • D Ahmad Zidan: ‘slew’
  • M Mohsin Khan & Taqi-uddin al-Hilali: ‘they killed’
  • M Muhammad Ali: ‘they (even) sought to kill’
  • M M Pickthall: ‘they slew’

  اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَالَّذِيۡنَ هَادُوۡا وَالصَّابِـُٔـوۡنَ وَالنَّصٰرٰى مَنۡ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالۡيَوۡمِ الۡاٰخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًـا فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُوۡنَ

.

In-nul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo-wul-la-zee-na                                                                                    Haa-do-wus-saa-bay-oo-na-wun-na-saa-raa                                                                            Mun-aa-ma-na-bil-laa-hay-wul-yao-mil-aa-khay-ray                                                                 Wa-aa-may-la-suaa-lay-hun-fa-laa                                                                                              Khao-foon-alai-him-wa-laa-hoom-yah-za-noo-n.

 

Surely those Believed and those who were                                                                        Jews and Sabeans and Christians                                                                                  Whoever believed in Allah and the Later Day                                                                    And acted righteously will then have no                                                                          Fear upon them. And they will not grieve.

  

A lot of the text and message is repeated in verses 002:063, 005:070 and 022:018

Also, those who made peace, protected, rescued, saved  or secured themselves from sin and against fear; those who accepted, admitted, affirmed, approved, concurred, confirmed, corroborated, embraced, evidenced, proved,  testified or witnessed their entry in Islam. See the Note 002:026c)   
  • وَ  — Wa… (ul) — And (= Conj., Connects words, phrases or clauses; also; but; additionally; though; when; while; yet; whereupon)
  • ٱلَّذِينَ — La-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person.  All those persons)

  • بِ — B…(il) — In (= This word in Arabic means ‘with’ but its use with God’s name makes its translation more appropriate with ‘in’)
  • اللهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; the One Only worthy of worship)

  • الۡيَوۡمِ — Yao-m…(il) — The Day (= Period of time.   The period between two sunrises.   Also the period between a sunrise and the sun-set)

 قُلۡ يٰۤـاَهۡلَ الۡـكِتٰبِ لَسۡتُمۡ عَلٰى شَىۡءٍ حَتّٰى تُقِيۡمُوا التَّوۡرٰٮةَ وَالۡاِنۡجِيۡلَ وَمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّكُمۡ‌ ؕ وَلَيَزِيۡدَنَّ كَثِيۡرًا مِّنۡهُمۡ مَّاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكَ مِنۡ رَّبِّكَ طُغۡيَانًا وَّكُفۡرًا‌ۚ فَلَا تَاۡسَ عَلَى الۡقَوۡمِ الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ‏ 

 

Qool-yaa-aah-lul-ka-taa-bay-lus-toom-alaa-shai-in                                                                Hut-taa-to-qee-moot-tao-raa-ta-wul-in-jee-la                                                                                Wa-maa-oon-zay-la-elai-koom-mi(n)r-rub-bay-koom

Wa-la-ya-zee-dun-na-ka-thee-run-min-hoom-maa-oon-zay-la                                                  Elai-ka-mi(n)r-rub-bay-ka-toogh-yaa-nun-wa-koof-raa                                                            Fa-laa-tau-sa-alul-qao-mil-kaa-fay-ree-n

 

Say, “Listen, the people of Book! You stand on nothing                                                Until you enforce the Torah and the Bible                                                                          And all that’s entrusted to you from your Lord.”

And what was entrusted to them from your Lord surely                                        Increases many of them in rebellion and rejection of truth.                                      So do not feel sorry for the Disbelievers.

  • لَسۡ — Lus — Nothing (= No ground or standing. A/t/a, ‘Ye have naught (of guidance),’  ‘you shall not be guided’ and ‘you have nothing (as regards guidance)’

  يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الرَّسُوۡلُ بَلِّغۡ مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡكَ مِنۡ رَّبِّكَ‌ ؕ وَاِنۡ لَّمۡ تَفۡعَلۡ فَمَا بَلَّغۡتَ رِسٰلَـتَهٗ‌ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ يَعۡصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ‌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَهۡدِى الۡقَوۡمَ الۡـكٰفِرِيۡنَ‏

 

Yaa-auy-yo-hur-ra-soo-lo-bul-ligh                                                                                                    Maa-oon-zay-la-elai-ka-mir-rub-bay-ka                                                                                      Wa-i(n)-lum-tuf-ul-fa-maa-bul-lugh-ta-ray-saa-la-ta-hoo                                                        Wul-laa-ho-yau-say-mo-ka-may-nun-naa-say                                                                              In-nul-laa-ha-laa-yah-dil-qao-mil-kaa-fay-ree-n

 

Listen you the Messenger! Deliver                                                                                        What’s entrusted to you from your Lord.                                                                            And if you don’t do it then you didn’t deliver His message.                                        And Allah protects you from the people.                                                                        Surely Allah does not guide the ungrateful people.

 وَلَوۡ اَنَّهُمۡ اَقَامُوا التَّوۡرٰٮةَ وَالۡاِنۡجِيۡلَ وَمَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَيۡهِمۡ مِّنۡ رَّبِّهِمۡ لَاَ كَلُوۡا مِنۡ فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَمِنۡ تَحۡتِ اَرۡجُلِهِمۡ‌ ؕ مِنۡهُمۡ اُمَّةٌ مُّقۡتَصِدَةٌ‌  ؕ وَكَثِيۡرٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ

 

Wa-lao-un-hoom-aqaa-moot-tao-raa-ta-wul-in-jee-la                                                                Wa-maa-oon-zay-la-min-rub-bay-him-la-aa-ka-loo                                                                Min-fao-qay-him-wa-min-tah-tay-ur-jo-lay-him                                                                        Min-hoom-oom-ma-toon-mooq-say-da-toon                                                                                    Wa-ka-thee-roon-min-hoom-saa-aa-maa-yau-ma-loo-n

 

And if they had enforced the Torah and the Bible                                                            And that entrusted to them from their Lord they certainly would eat                    From above them and from under their feet.                                                            From among them is a nation who are moderate.                                                        And evil is that a lot of them practice.

  • رَّبِّ — Rub-bay — God (= The Almighty Allah who fills needs of all creatures; Cherisher; Creator; Guardian; Master; Lord Provident. The Only One Who provides all that sustains life. The Ultimate Provider of air, water, food and whatever we and all other creatures need to live and subsist)
  • هِمۡ —  Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • لَ — La — Certainly (= Absolutely; assuredly; certainly; clearly; definitely; doubtlessly; indeed; positively; really; truly; surely; verily)
  • اَ كَلُوۡا — Aa-ka-loo — Would eat (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Consumed; partaken. A/t/a,  ‘enjoyed,’ ‘they would … have been nourished,’ ‘they … would have partaken,’ ‘would have eaten of good things,’ ‘would … have eaten (of good things),’ ‘would have eaten,’ ‘would … have gotten provision’ and ‘they shall be given abundance’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of. See  مِّنۡ   above)
  • فَوۡقِ — Fao-qay — Above (= On next degree above, beyond, over, greater, higher, larger more or superior. Also, on next degree below, inferior, lower, lesser, smaller or under. A/t/a, ‘above’ and ‘spiritual … bounties’)
  • هِمۡ — Him — Them (= pro., pl., m., 3rd person. Those men; they)
  • وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ  above. A/t/a, ‘as well as’)
  • مِنۡ — Min — From (= Among, from or out of. See  مِّنۡ  above)
  • تَحۡتِ — Tah-tay — Under (= Below; beneath; on lower level; underneath. A/t/a, ‘under’)
  • اَرۡجُلِ — Ur-jo-lay — Feet (= n., pl. Lower extremity of legs that directly touch the ground. The terminal parts of legs below ankles. A/t/a, ‘material bounties’ and ‘feet, (thus would have enjoyed the boons of the heaven and the earth’)

  • اُمَّةٌ — Oom-ma-toon — Nation (= n., Group of people. A/t/a, ‘nation,’ ‘a party of,’ ‘a section,’ ‘people,’ ‘a people’ and ‘a community’)
  • مُّقۡتَصِدَةٌ‌ — Mooq-sa-da-toon — Who are moderate (= n., Who adopt, follow and pursue the middle of whatever course, path or road that lies ahead of them. A/t/a, ‘on the right course,’ ‘on the right course (i.e. they act on the Revelation and believe in Prophet  Muhammad s.a.w. as Abdullah bin Salam r.u),’ ‘keeping to the moderate course,’ ‘who are moderate,’ ‘which is moderate,’ ‘who is moderate (and of balanced mind),’ ‘a frugal’ and ‘righteous men’)

  • كَثِيۡرٌ — Ka-thee-roon — A lot (= Adj., Abundant. Ample. Bigger, greater or larger in number. Good deal. Great favor. Much more. Of exceeding quality and quantity. Of several times higher height. Plump. Plentiful. Without cease. Without stint. Any multitude, overflowing or repetition of goodness A/t/a, ‘many of them,’ ‘most of them’ and ‘a large number of’)

  • يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ — Yau-ma-loo-n — They practice (= v., pres., pl., 3rd person. Act; do; execute; exercise; function; implement; operate; perform; practice; work. A/t/a, ‘they do,’ ‘Follow a course that is,’ ‘evil are their deeds,’ ‘do … deeds’ and ‘do nothing but evil.’ But ‘conduct’ as a noun is no translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has states as a verb)
