The Holy Qor-aan 004:136
يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا كُوۡنُوۡا قَوَّامِيۡنَ بِالۡقِسۡطِ شُهَدَآءَ لِلّٰهِ وَلَوۡ عَلٰٓى اَنۡفُسِكُمۡ اَوِ الۡوَالِدَيۡنِ و الۡاَقۡرَبِيۡنَ ؕ اِنۡ يَّكُنۡ غَنِيًّا اَوۡ فَقِيۡرًا فَاللّٰهُ اَوۡلٰى بِهِمَا فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا الۡهَوٰٓى اَنۡ تَعۡدِلُوۡا ۚ وَاِنۡ تَلۡوٗۤا اَوۡ تُعۡرِضُوۡا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِيۡرًا
Yaa auy-yo-ha ul-la-zee-na aa-ma-noo Koo-noo quw-waa-me-na bay il-qis-tay Sho-ha-daa-aa lay il-laa-hay Wa laa alaa un-fo-say koom aa-way Il-waa-lay-dai-nay wa ul-uq-ra-be-na
In ya-koon gha-ne-yun auo fa-qee-run Fa ul-laa-ho auo-laa bay hay-maa Fa laa-tut-ta-bay-oo l-ha-waa un tau-day-loo
Wa in tul-woo auo toe-ray-dzoo fa in-nul Laa-ha kaa-na bay maa tau-ma-loo-na kha-be-raa
Listen, you all who have believed! Be firm with fairness As witnesses for Allah And even if it be against yourselves Or the parents or close relatives
Whether they were rich or poor Allah is a better friend for them both. So do not follow mere wishes that you be just.
And if you bend truth or avoid the truth then remember That Allah has always been with what you do Well-Informed.
The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times
- يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
- اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha … (ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
- ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
- اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. The next seven words (but in a different order) are in verses 004:136 and 005:009
- كُوۡنُوۡا — Koo-noo — You be (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Be; be strict but fair; must or should have been; A/t/a, ‘conduct yourself’)
- قَوَّامِيۡنَ — Qyw-waa-me-na — Firm (= n., pl., Those who enforce, establish, keep up, maintain, order, preserve, prove, retain, sustain or uphold. A/t/a, ‘maintainers’ and ‘observers.’ But using a verb as ‘Stand out firmly’ and ‘stand up firmly,’ or adjective as ‘staunch’ and ‘strict,’ are not accurate translations of the noun that the Holy Qor-aan has used)
- بِ — Bay … (il) — With (= Literally the word بِ means with. A/t/a, ‘For,’ ‘of’ and ‘in observing’)
- الۡقِسۡطِ — Qis-tay — Fairness (= n., Balanced view; equity; justice. Also, when joined with the previous word بِ the word becomes an adv and means correctly, equitably, fairly, fully; honestly, justly or properly. A/t/a, ‘justice’)
- شُهَدَآءَ — Sho-ha-daa-aa — Witnesses (= n., pl., Attesters; observers; on-lookers; testifiers; verifiers; watches; watchers; witnesses. Also, adducers, affirmers, bearers, givers, presenters, producers or providers of evidence or testimony and see Note 004:070. A/t/a, ‘bearers of witness,’ ‘bear witness’ and ‘bear true witness’)
- لِلۡ — L … (il) — For (= Concerning, regarding; relative to; intended for; to; towards. A/t/a, ‘for,’ ‘for the sake of’ and ‘before’)
- اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
- لَوۡ — Lao — If (= Even if; in case; under the circumstances; wish; would. A/t/a, ‘For,’ ‘even though it be,’ ‘even if it be’ and ‘even as against’)
- عَلٰى — Alaa — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on; top of; over; to; upon)
- اَنۡفُسِ — Un-fo-say — Selves (= n., pl., Hearts; individuals; minds; own sake; persons; souls. Refers also to the ‘loved one’s such as fellows, followers, individuals or people).
- كُمۡ — Koom — Your (= pro., pl., 2nd person. You all men. Generally this is the way the Holy Qor-aan addresses men and women)
- اَوِ — Aa-way … (il) — Or (= Alternatively; in substitution)
- الۡوَالِدَيۡنِ — Waa-lay-dai-nay– Parents (= n., pl., Mother and father how high-so-ever)
- وَ — Wa-(ul) — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses. See وَ above)
- الۡاَقۡرَبِيۡنَ — Uq-ra-be-na — Close relatives (= n., pl. Close relations; kith and kin; kinsmen; relatives. A/t/a, ‘kin,’ ‘near relatives,’ ‘kindred,’ ‘near of kin,’ ‘kinsfolk’ and ‘your kin’)
- اِنۡ — In … (ya) — Whether (= If; in case; under the circumstances; when situation arises; whenever; whether’)
- يَكُن — Ya-koon — Has been (= v., pass., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. Indicates continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future. - فَقِيرً۬ا — Fa-qee-run — Poor (= n., Dependent upon others’ help; indigent; in need; needy. without adequate means; Also, destitute; homeless; penniless.)

- اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- اَوۡلٰى — Auo-laa — Better friend (= n., Closer or nearer protector. A/t/a, ‘has better right,’ ‘nearer … (than ye are),’ ‘more regardful … than you are,’ ‘more regardful than you could be,’ ‘can protect,’ ‘nearer to him than you are’ and ‘better protector’)

- هِمَا — Hay-maa — Them both (= pro., pl., m., 3 rd person. Refers to aforesaid two persons. A/t/a, ‘them both’ and ‘to both (than you)’

- تَتَّبِعُوا — Tut-ta-bay-oo — Follow (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Copy; duplicate. A/t/a, ‘Do not be led by’ but such statement in the passive voice is not the translation of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the active voice)
- الۡهَوٰٓى — Ul-ha-waa — Wishes (= n., pl., Acts around sexuality; caprices; crazes; impure, lower and evil desires, delights and excitements; lust; obsessions; passions; tendencies to sudden impulsive decisions or changes of mind. A/t/a ‘lusts (Of your hearts),’ ‘lusts,’ ‘low desires,’ ‘vain desires’ and ‘passion’)

- تَعۡدِلُوۡا — Tau-day-loo — You be just (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Be fair. Give in equal measures or weights. Keep scales in balance. Stay equitable and just among contesting claims. - تُعۡرِضُوۡا — Toe-ray-dzoo — Avoid truth (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Evade; divert; keep silent rather than tell the truth; side-step; withhold testimony. A/t/a ‘decline to do justice,’ ‘turn away from (truth),’ ‘turn,’ ‘fall away,’ ‘evade true evidence,’ ‘decline to give it’ and ‘refuse to give it’)

- ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
- كَانَ — Kaa-na — Has been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. The word indicates the continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future endlessly. A/t/a, ‘is’ [many authors])
- بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ means with)
- مَاۤ — Maa — What (= What; whatever; whatsoever)
- تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ — Tau-ma-loo-na — You do (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act; activate; attempt; carry out; effect; exercise; execute; function; go; make out; implement; operate; perform; practice; render; serve; run-through; work-out. See Note 002:075b)
- خَبِيۡرًا — Kha-be-raa — Well-Informed (= adj., superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest and the most informed. It means that none more than Him is well-informed. An attribute of God Almighty. Knows all. The Best Knower of Truth. The Most Aware. All-Aware. The Most Acquainted. See verse 001:001)

The Holy Qor-aan 004:129
وَاِنِ امۡرَاَةٌ خَافَتۡ مِنۡۢ بَعۡلِهَا نُشُوۡزًا اَوۡ اِعۡرَاضًا فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡهِمَاۤ اَنۡ يُّصۡلِحَا بَيۡنَهُمَا صُلۡحًا ؕ وَالصُّلۡحُ خَيۡر ؕ وَاُحۡضِرَتِ الۡاَنۡفُسُ الشُّحَّ ؕ وَاِنۡ تُحۡسِنُوۡا وَتَتَّقُوۡا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِيۡرًا
Wa-aiy-nim-ra-aa-ton-khaa-fut-min-bau-lay-haa No-shoo-zun-auo-aiy-raa-dzun-fa-laa-jo-naa-ha-alai-hay-maa Un-yoos-lay-haa-bai-na-ho-maa-sool-hun-wus-sool-ho-khai-r Wa-oh-dzay-ra-til-un-fo-soosh-shoh-ha
Wa-in-toh-say-noo-wa-tut-ta-qoo-fa-in-nul-laa-ha Kaa-na-bay-maa-tau-la-moo-na-kha-be-raa
And if a wife feared from her husband Bad behavior or desertion then there is no sin on them two That a peace is made between them. And peace is best. And the souls have been raised with mean streak
And if you do kindness and be righteous then Allah Has always been Well-Informed of what you do
Allah’s following Attribute is repeated in verses like 004:095, 004:129, 004:136, 048:012
** Note: 004:129. The word يُّصۡلِحَا (= yoos-lay-haa) clearly indicates that both wife and husband are brought together by a third party which usually is some impartial arbiter.
The two conditions bad behavior and separation stated earlier lay down the foundation of why the spouses are not together. In such situations almost always the best is a third party’s action which is stated in the passive voice.
It is inaccurate to translate this word in the active voice as is done by some translators as if the spouses were to take this action.
