The Holy Qor-aan 004:095
يٰۤـاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ فَتَبَـيَّـنُوۡا وَلَا تَقُوۡلُوۡا لِمَنۡ اَ لۡقٰٓى اِلَيۡكُمُ السَّلٰمَ لَسۡتَ مُؤۡمِنًا ۚ تَبۡـتَـغُوۡنَ عَرَضَ الۡحَيٰوةِ الدُّنۡيَا فَعِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيۡرَةٌ ؕ كَذٰلِكَ كُنۡتُمۡ مِّنۡ قَبۡلُ فَمَنَّ اللّٰهُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَتَبَـيَّـنُوۡا ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِيۡرًا
Ya-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo Ezaa-dza-rub-toom-fee-sa-bee-lil-laa-hay Fa-ta-buy-ya-noo-wa-la-ta-qoo-loo-lay-mun Ul-qaa-elai-ko-moos-sa-la-ma-lus-ta-moe-may-naa
Tub-ta-ghoo-na-aa-ra-dzul-ha-yaa-tid-doon-ya Fa-in-dul-laa-hay-ma-ghaa-nay-mo-ka-thee-ra-toon Ka-zaa-lay-ka-koon-toom-min-qub-lo Fa-mun-nul-laa-ho-alai-koom-fa-ta-buy-ya-noo In-nul-laa-ha-kaa-na-bay-maa-tau-ma-loo-na-kha-bee-raa
Listen you all who have believed! When you have gone out in the cause of Allah Then explain yourself and do not say to anyone Who offered you peace, “You are not a Believer”
You seek the temporaries of the life of this world But with Allah are the free bounties in plenty. This is how you had been in the past. Then Allah favored you. So explain yourself well. Certainly Allah has always been Well-Informed with what you do
The Holy Qor-aan has used the Phrase Yaa-auy-yo-hul-la-zee-na-aa-ma-noo many times
- يٰۤ — Yaa — Listen (= Be attentive; hearken; pay attention; O!)
- اَيُّهَا — Auy-yo-ha(ul) — You all (= All addressees; entire audience; whole lot of listeners)
- ٱلَّذِينَ — Ul-la-zee-na — Those who (= pl., m, 3rd person. Those articles, things or persons
- اٰمَنُوۡۤ — Aa-ma-noo — They Believed (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Believed in the Holy Qor-aan; became Moslems. Accepted, acknowledged, admitted or witnessed their entry in Iss-laam. See Commentaries like Islam – 101, Phrase Aa-ma-noo-wa-aa-may-loos … and Believe and Disbelieve that floodlight other aspects how the Holy Qor-aan has used this word)
- اِذَا — Ezaa — Whenever (= At the time or event; consider; now that; when)
- ضَرَبۡتُمۡ — Dza-rub-toom You have gone out (= v., past., pl., 2nd person. Literally beat, hit or went out. If followed by the phrase فِى الۡاَرۡضِ (fil-ur-dzay) the word means you travelled as stated in Note 003:157. A/t/a, ‘go abroad,’ ‘go forth (to fight),’ ‘go forth to fight,’ ‘go forth,’ ‘go to war,’ ‘go (to fight),’ ‘go to fight’ and ‘set forth’ but these translations as a verb in the present tense are not of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
- فِىۡ — Fee — In (= In; concerning; regarding; in reference; relative to. Also, amidst, during or inside a time, place or event)
- سَبِيۡلِ — Sa-bee-l … (il) — Cause (= n., s., Action; alternative; cause, course; escape; line; means; measure; method; path; pretext; remedy; road; way. See Note 004:089 & Phrase fee-sa-be-lil-laa-hay)
- اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
- فَ — Fa — Then (= After this; at the end; consequently; finally; hence; in conclusion; so; thereafter; therefore; thus)
- تَبَـيَّـنُوۡا — Ta-buy-ya-noo — You explain (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Clarify; describe, detail, explain, express or justify. See below Note 004:095)
- وَ — Wa — And (= Conj., links words, phrases or clauses; additionally; but; also; more over; though; when; while; yet)
- لَا — Laa — Do not (= Naught; neither; never; none; nor; not at all; absolute denial and total negation without exception)
- تَقُوۡلُوۡا — Ta-qoo-loo — You say (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Assert; speak; state; specify; tell. A/t/a, ‘say abruptly’)
- لِ — Lay — For (= Concerning; intended for; regarding; relative to; to)
- مَنۡ — Mun — Who (= Anyone; whoever; whom; whomever; whoso)
- اَ لۡقٰٓى — Ul-qaa — Offered (= v., past., pl., 3rd person. Cast; said; threw. A/t/a, ‘offers,’ ‘offereth,’ ‘offer,’ ‘greets’ and ‘greets you (by embracing Islam)’ but such translation as a verb in the present tense is not of what the Holy Qor-aan has stated in the past tense)
- اِلَيۡ — Elai — To (= At; in the direction of; to; towards)
- كُمُ — Ko-m..(os) — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all men. See تُمُ above)
- السَّلٰمَ — Sa-la-ma — Peace (= n., Greetings; the action of invoking peace on another person. A/t/a, ‘salutation,’ ‘salutation of peace,’ ‘greetings of peace’ and ‘Salam peace, the Muslim salutation to show himself thereby a Muslim)’
- لَسۡتَ — Lus-ta — You are not (= A/t/a, ‘Thou art none of,’ ‘Thou art no,’ ‘Thou art not’ and ‘You are not’)
- مُؤۡمِنًا — Moe-may-nun — He believer (= n., s., m., One who followed the Holy Qor-aan and embraced Islaam; a Moslem)
- تَبۡـتَـغُوۡنَ — Tub-ta-ghoo-na — You seek (= v., pres., pl., 2nd per. Actively pursue; aspire; belabor to acquire; crave; desire; exert hard work to secure; like; overstress to obtain; try to get; want; wish for. A/t/a, ‘You seek,’ ‘if you seek,’ ‘seeking’ and ‘coveting’)
- عَرَضَ — Aa-ra-dza..(ul) — Temporaries (= n., Presentment of beauties, fun, joy and pleasure. A/t/a, ‘the perishable goods of,’ ‘chance profits … (so that ye may despoil him),’ ‘the goods of,’ ‘the transitory goods of this life,’ ‘perishable goods’ and ‘chance booty’)
- الۡحَيٰوةِ — Ha-yaa-t(id) — Life (= n., The condition of being alive, alert and aspiring)
- الدُّنۡيَا — Doon-ya — This world (= n., This world; world at hand; near term. A/t/a, ‘this’)
- فَ — Fa — But (= After this; at the end; consequently. See فَ above. A/t/a, ‘but’)
- عِنۡدَ– In-da…(ul) — With (= At; close at hand; from; in close proximity of; with. In or within the counting, esteem, estimate, eyes front, near, presence, precincts, seeing or sight of. A/t/a, ‘has’)
- اللّٰهِ — Laa-hay — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- مَغَانِمُ — Ma-gha-nay-mo — Blessing (= n., pl., Bounties; spoils of war. A/t/a, ‘profits and spoils,’ ‘spoils,’ ‘good things,’ ‘gains’ and ‘profits and booties)
- كَثِيۡرَةٌ — Ka-thee-ra-toon — Plenty (= adj., Abundant; a lot; ample; heaps; in plenty; loads; massive quantity; more than what is adequate, enough or sufficient; plenteous; plenty. A/t/a, ‘much more.’ This and the prior seven words are also translated as ‘for in the world to come there are abundant gains’)
- كَذٰلِكِ — Ka-zaa-lay-ka –This is how (= Combines two words. كَ means ‘example, like, identical resembling, similar. ذٰلِكَ means ‘all this right in here and refers to an aforesaid event, fact, person or statement. The combination means ‘even so,’ ‘so it will be,’ ‘such is the way,’ ‘the same way,’ ‘this is how,’ ‘that is how’ or ‘this way’. A/t/a, ‘Even thus were ye,’ ‘even thus (as he now is),’ ‘were such (disbelievers),’ ‘were such,’ ‘such were,’ ‘like this,’ ‘thus so,’ ‘such was your custom’ and ‘Even as he is now, so were you yourselves’)
- كُنۡتُمۡ — Koon-toom — You had been (= Since the past were and have been continuously. A/t/a, ‘were ye,’ ‘you were,’ ‘you too were’ and ‘such were you’)
- مِنۡ — Min –In / From (= Among, from or out of the class or category of several
- قَبۡلُ — Qub-lo — Past / Before (= Aforetime; ahead; antecedent; before; earlier than; former time; older times; occurred or passed in prior period; previously; prior to. A/t/a, ‘before that (you accepted Islam)’ and ‘in days gone by’)
- فَ — Fa — Then (= After this; at the end; consequently. See فَ above)
- مَنَّ — Mun-na..(ul) — Favored (= v., past., s., 3rd person., Did a favor; treated kindly; was specially gracious. A/t/a, ‘hath since then been gracious unto you,’ ‘conferred His special favour,’ ‘conferred .. favours,’ ‘conferred … His Favours (i.e. guided you to Islam,’ ‘conferred a benefit,’ ‘showed …. grace’ and ‘bestowed …. His grace’)
- اللّٰهُ — Laa-ho — Allah (= The One and the Only One Almighty God)
- عَلَيۡ — Alai — On (= Above; against; before; during; for; on; on top of; over; to; upon)
- كُمۡ — Koom — You (= pro., pl., m., 2nd person. You all)
- فَ — Fa — So (= After this; at the end; consequently. See فَ above. A/t/a, ‘hence’ and ‘therefore’)
- تَبَـيَّـنُوۡا — Ta-buy-ya-noo — Explain well (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. State what is in your mind. See تَبَـيَّـنُوۡا above. A/t/a, ‘carefully investigate,’ ‘make proper investigations,’ ‘make investigation,’ ‘make due investigation,’ ‘be cautious in discrimination,’ ‘discern well’ and ‘show discernment’)
Allah’s following Attribute is repeated in verses like 004:095, 004:129, 004:136, 048:012
- اِنَّ — In-na…(ul) — Certainly (= Absolutely; definitely; doubtlessly; earnestly; indeed; positively; really; seriously; surely; truly; verily)
- ٱللَّهَ — Laa-ha — Allah (= The Almighty God; The only One worthy of worship)
- كَانَ — Kaa-na — Has been (= v., past., s., m., 3rd person., Continued doing; had been; used to; were, went on doing. The word indicates the continuity from the past to the present and leading into the future endlessly. A/t/a, ‘is’ [many authors])
- بِ — Bay — With (= Literally the word بِ means with)
- مَاۤ — Maa — What (= What; whatever; whatsoever)
- تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ — Tau-ma-loo-na — You do (= v., pres., pl., 2nd person. Act; activate; attempt; carry out; effect; exercise; execute; function; go; make out; implement; operate; perform; practice; render; serve; run-through; work-out. See Note 002:075b)
- خَبِيۡرًا — Kha-be-raa — Well-Informed (= superlative form indicates the greatest, the highest, the most Aware, Informed and Knowledgeable. This word means one who knows and is fully acquainted, aware, cognizant. However, authors added different prefixes like All, Ever, Most, Well, etc (see verse 001:001) to the plain meanings when translating it as an attribute of the Almighty Allah)
** Note 004:095. This verse lays a command. Introduce yourself. State your objectives and purposes openly. Let those in new surroundings know who you are and why you are there.
The aim is that in a new environment one must explain himself as to who he is and why he is there. Such preemptive providing of the reasons that propelled one to move there and the objectives he must pursue will obviously minimize potential misgivings and misunderstandings.
The command has many advantages. All locals are naturally curious about a new arrival. Self-introduction eliminates most doubts. Sharing the reason for coming in a new locality makes the new neighbors open up right away. Human beings are social creatures and that makes future interaction mutually beneficial to all. Law and order personnel get accurate info without tapping their already committed resources.
Yet such benefits are not shown by translations like ‘Investigate carefully,’ ‘make investigation,’ ‘make due investigation,’ ‘make proper investigation,’ ‘make proper investigation (before) you dub anyone,’ ‘verify (the truth),’ ‘be careful to discriminate,’ ‘show discernment’ or ‘discern between friend and foe’)
